Completing a Fiji Airways Flight Delay Compensation Claim Yourself
The following process will apply to delayed flights from, to, or within Canada, and those departing from UK or EU airports:

Decoding the UK & EU Flight Delay Compensation Guidelines
Whether it’s Regulation UK261 or EU261, the conditions are the same, as are the payouts. To qualify for Fiji Airways compensation, these are the main requirements:
- Flight delay of at least 3 hours upon arrival at the final destination.
- The delay must be caused by something the airline could have prevented, meaning they are at fault.
Actual payout amounts are determined by a combination of delay length and flight distance.

*The currently available routes from the UK and the EU travel long distances, like from London and Frankfurt to Singapore, so most Fiji Airways flight delay compensation claims will fall into the highest distance category.
What Else Can You Get for Fiji Airways Delays?
Cash is always great, but there are other types of compensation available, too – mainly the right to care and assistance. For a Fiji Airways flight over 2,175 miles (3,500km), passengers can request the following for delays of 4 hours or more:
- Refreshments, such as food and drinks
- Communication like wi-fi access or a phone call to rearrange plans
- A hotel stay for overnight delays, plus ground transportation to and from the hotel

Fiji Airways Cancellations – What To Do
Although delays are bad, a Fiji Airways cancellation is likely worse. Here’s how to proceed to cover all your bases:
- Look for alternative flights ASAP to keep your travel plans intact.
- If no suitable replacement options are available (typically, they only operate one daily flight for UK and EU-based routes), get a Fiji Airways refund and look for flights from another airline.
- Get confirmation of the reason for the canceled flight, as this will impact your ability to file a compensation claim in the future.
- Request food, drinks, communication, and hotel accommodations if applicable.
- When a Fiji Airways flight is canceled on short notice, compensation may be possible. Save all your correspondence and documents to be safe.
How Does Fiji Airways Cancellation Compensation Work?
To qualify for a cash payout, the following conditions must be true:
- The airline is at fault for the cancellation.
- You receive fewer than 2 weeks (14 days) notice of the cancellation.

Fiji Airways Compensation – Canada
Any flights going to, from, or within Canada are also compensation-eligible in certain cases for at-fault delays and cancellations. These are the expected payouts based on the delay time at the final destination:
- 3-6 hours: $275 (CA$400)
- 6-9 hours: $485 (CA$700)
- 9 hours+: $700 (CA$1,000)
For compensation calculation purposes, Fiji Airways is considered a large airline as it has carried over 2 million passengers in the 2 previous years.
If a delay makes your travel irrelevant, you can simply get a Fiji Airways refund, but the good news is that in Canada, the airline is still required to pay $275 (CA$400). You can also claim compensation in the form of assistance/care during the delay. The same is true for US flights, minus the extra compensation.

The Fiji Airways Cancellation Policy – Can You Ever Get Your Money Back?
For all US passengers, you have 24 hours to cancel your flight for travel booked at least 7 days in the future. This is mandated by the US Department of Transportation, not Fiji Airways.
Once past the initial 24 hours, the applicable Fiji Airways refund policy will depend solely on the type of fare you purchased. Here’s a breakdown of the options Fiji Airways offers:
- Lite – non-refundable
- Value – non-refundable
- Comfort – refundable for a fee
- Plus – fully refundable
- Biz Value – refundable for a fee
Note that according to the Fiji Airways refund policy, you always have to pay the fare difference, regardless of the fare type.
Fiji Airways Missed Connections
To keep it simple, a Fiji Airways missed connection for flights originating in the UK and the EU, passengers can also claim for the right to care and up to $650. The missed connection must result from an airline-preventable cause and delay you at your final destination by at least 3 hours.
Additionally, you get a replacement flight or a Fiji Airways reimbursement if you no longer need to continue to the destination.
Extraordinary Circumstances & Why They Matter
As discussed, the airline must be at fault for an interruption in order for Fiji Airways compensation to apply. Here are a few examples of situations when the airline is liable:
- Fiji Airways staff strikes
- Scheduling mixups
- Problem with the aircraft that could have been prevented by routine maintenance
When the interruption cause is completely outside the airline’s control, it’s referred to as an extraordinary circumstance, which means they don’t have to pay:
- Any strikes other than the airline staff
- Aircraft manufacturing defects
- Poor weather
In a recent example, Fiji Airways had to cancel a flight at the last minute from Fiji to Sydney due to dangerous weather conditions. An airline spokesperson explained:
Delays of up to 4 hours have been experienced, and with gates occupied by departing aircraft, a number of afternoon arrivals were unable to approach the terminal to allow guests to disembark.
So, because weather is an extraordinary circumstance, even if this flight was departing from the EU, UK, or Canada, no Fiji Airways compensation would be possible.
