Even though Royal Jordanian Airlines isn’t based in the European Union, passengers can still get compensation for delayed and canceled flights. Keep reading to find out what steps you should take to ensure you’re compensated for your inconvenience.
How Much Compensation Can You Get?
Anytime you fly with Royal Jordanian and depart from an airport in the European Union or the United Kingdom, you could get cash compensation if your flight arrives 3 or more hours late. The amount is based on the overall distance of your flight as you can see in the following table.
Royal Jordanian Compensation Amounts | ||
Flights under 1,500km | Flights between 1,500-3,500km | Flights over 3,500km |
€250 (£220) | $430 (€400) | €600 (£520*) |
*Royal Jordanian might try to reduce this amount by as much as 50%, but AirAdvisor always works to get the full amount.
Canceled Flights with Royal Jordanian
A canceled flight can derail your travel plans, so be sure to take these steps if you’re at the airport when your flight is canceled:
- Ask what caused the canceled flight.
- Find an alternate flight or ask for a rebooking.
- If nothing works and you want to cancel, ask for a refund.
- Request care and assistance if you wait at least 2 hours
- Keep receipts for any expenses, and document as much as possible.
Compensation will depend on when you were notified
- If Royal Jordanian gave you notice of the cancellation 2 weeks or more before departure, you won’t be compensated in cash, but you will be given the option of a rebooking OR a refund without added fees.
- If Royal Jordanian gave you notice or the canceled flight less than 2 weeks before departure, then you’ll have a choice of a refund or a rebooking as well as financial compensation if the issue causing the disruption could have been prevented, and wasn’t due to extraordinary circumstances.
Royal Jordanian Flight Delays
If your flight is delayed, you will be able to receive care and assistance at the airport as well as some other entitlements, thanks to EU and UK laws.
- Delays lasting 2+ hours: If you’re departing from an EU or UK airport and have a delay lasting 2 or more hours, then Royal Jordanian must provide you with food and drink coupons as well as 2 free phone calls or emails. Ask for these things if they aren’t offered, and always keep receipts for any essential purchases.
- For overnight delays, Royal Jordanian must provide one night of lodging and transportation to the accommodation and back. Again, if you have to pay for this yourself, keep your receipts.
- If you are delayed by 3+ hours upon arrival, then you might be eligible for financial compensation if the airline is at fault.
- If the delay is5 hours or longer, you’ll be offered a refund or a rebooking to your destination as well as a flight back to your original point of departure if your trip no longer serves a purpose because of the flight delay.
How to Improve Your Chances of a Compensation Payout
- Ask an agent what led to the delay.
- Collect supporting evidence. Snap photos of the weather or take a screenshot of the delay notification.
- Retain all receipts for out-of-pocket expenses.

Denied Boarding Because of Overbooking
Sometimes, Royal Jordanian will oversell their flights, meaning that you could be denied boarding because too many passengers showed up for the flight. If this happens when scheduled to depart from an EU or UK airport, you’ll get the choice of an alternate flight or a refund, as well as cash compensation.
Missed Connections with Royal Jordanian
Should you miss a connecting flight because of an earlier Royal Jordanian flight disruption, you’ll get a rebooking or a refund as well as a ticket back to your point of departure if you decide to abandon your travel plans.
Your Rights as a Royal Jordanian Passenger
The laws we’ve been talking about are all part of passenger rights Regulation EC 261/2004.
The United Kingdom has a similar set of laws called UK261. So, if you happen to be flying from an airport in the UK, you’ll be protected as well.
Is Compensation Guaranteed?
Care and assistance are the only forms of compensation that are guaranteed. Financial compensation will only be paid to you if Royal Jordanian is at fault for the flight disruption - meaning they could have avoided or prevented the issue causing it. In other words, if extraordinary circumstances were at play, then you will not receive a payout.
Submitting a Royal Jordanian Compensation Claim
For airlines in the European union or UK, filing a compensation claim is pretty straightforward. But because Royal Jordanian is outside these areas, the process can be a little more complex.
To file a claim, you simply have to contact the airline in writing. Go to their website and look in the contacts section for their email. Then, draft a compensation letter and be sure to attach as much supporting documentation as possible.
The airline should respond within a few weeks, but sometimes it can take quite a bit longer, or your claim will be rejected outright. This is where our legal team can help!
