Aegean Airlines employees haven’t had a strike in the last 10 years, but their flights have been affected by strikes in other sectors of the airline industry. So, in this guide, we’ll explain exactly what you need to know and what to do when you hear about a strike that could cause delays and cancellations to your booking.

Do You Have Rights as an Aegean Passenger?

Yes! As an Aegean passenger, you’re protected by Regulation EU261 as long as you travel to, from, or within Europe. This means that if you experience strike-related delays or cancellations, you can get certain benefits from the airline, including repayment if you’re late by at least 3 hours.

Can You Modify Your Aegean Booking?

In most cases, when a strike has been called, the airline will give passengers a chance to change their booking free of charge, if they believe a strike will interfere with scheduled flights.

You’ll be sent a notification of any changes to your booking via SMS, email, or through alerts in the Aegean mobile app, but you can also check the airline’s travel advisory page on their website for updates.

  • If you have a refundable ticket, then you can change or cancel it without a fee according to the rules of your ticket.
  • If you’ve purchased a non-refundable ticket, you should first check with Aegean to see if they will allow changes because of the pending or active strike. Generally, airlines will be flexible with changes if they know a strike could be disruptive to passengers.
  • If you are unable to change your flight without a fee, then it might be best to wait until your flight is canceled by Aegean. Doing this will give you the choice of a rebooking (free of charge) or a refund.

How to Prepare When You Hear About a Strike

  1. Sign up for notifications: If you haven’t already, sign up for Aegean alerts or download their mobile app to get updates if your flight is affected.
  2. Check travel insurance: If you haven’t purchased travel insurance, check your credit card to see if it offers some protection for strike-related flight disruptions.
  3. Find out the terms of your ticket: Read up on the kind of booking you purchased to see if you can modify or cancel without a fee.
  4. Pack for delays: Pack a carry-on with essential items for long waits at the airport.

Will Aegean Help You if Your Flight is Disrupted?

Aegean Airlines is required by law to keep you informed about any unfolding strike activity that may affect your travels. As well, you can expect to receive the following if your flight is interrupted because of a work stoppage.

  • Canceled Flights. Aegean must give you the choice of a new flight at no extra cost OR a refund.
  • Delayed Flights. If you’re stuck at the airport for 2 or more hours, you must be offered  meals and refreshments coupons or vouchers and, if you are delayed overnight, Aegean will provide hotel accommodation and transport. If you have to pay for these essentials, keep your receipts for reimbursement.

Repayment for Strike-related Disruptions

You could get repaid as much as 600 EUR if your flight is disrupted by an Aegean employee strike, if you arrive at least 3 hours past your scheduled arrival time at your destination.
