Azores has experienced a few strikes over the last 10 years, but the most recent one in 2024 was avoided when agreements were reached. So, if you hear about a strike, remember that there is a good chance it might not materialize. On the other hand, it’s a good idea to prepare for delays and cancellations in case it does.

In this guide you’ll learn what to do before, during, and after a Azores strike.

What are your rights as an Azores passenger?

If you fly with Azores, you’re protected by Regulation EU261 as long as you travel to, from, or within Europe. So, if you have strike-related delays or cancellations, you can expect some assistance from the airline, including repayment if you’re late by at least 3 hours.

Can you modify your Azores ticket?

It depends on the kind of ticket you purchased. Let’s take a closer look.

  • Refundable tickets: You can change or cancel these without a fee but always check the rules of your specific ticket to verify.
  • Non-refundable tickets: Check with Azores to see if they will allow changes because of the pending or active strike. Usually, airlines will allow some flexibility with changes if they know a strike could be disruptive to passengers.
  • When you can’t change your flight, then you can wait until your flight is canceled by Azores. This way, you’ll have the choice of a rebooking (free of charge) or a refund.

4 Steps to prepare for a Azores strike

  1. Sign up for notifications: If you haven’t already, sign up for Azores alerts or download their mobile app to get updates if your flight is affected.
  2. Check for travel insurance: If you haven’t purchased travel insurance, check your credit card to see if it offers some protection for strike-related flight disruptions.
  3. Pack for delays: Pack a carry-on with essential items for long waits at the airport.
  4. Remember to document everything: If your flight is delayed or canceled, remember to start keeping a record of conversations you have with the airline, and collect boarding passes, receipts and other materials that can support your case if you decide to file a claim later on.

Will Azores help you if your flight is disrupted?

Yes! In fact, Azores is required by law to keep you informed about any unfolding strike activity that may affect your travels. But they will also help you in the following ways if you have flight disruptions.

  • Canceled Flights and Extended Delays. Azores will give you the choice of a rebooking at no extra charge OR a refund if your flight is canceled or delayed by 5 hours or more.
  • Flight delays. If you’re stuck at the airport for 2 or more hours, you’ll be given vouchers for meals and refreshments and, if you are delayed overnight, Azores will provide hotel accommodation and transport. If you have to pay for these things yourself, keep your receipts for reimbursement.

Repayment for strike-related disruptions

You could get repaid as much as 600 EUR if your flight is disrupted by a Azores employee strike, but the strike must be announced AND you must arrive at least 3 hours past your scheduled arrival time at your destination.

However, if the strike was not called in advance, and employees stopped working suddenly and without warning (a wildcat strike), then you will not be able to collect any repayment from the airline as these situations are seen as beyond Aegean’s control.

What about airport and other 3rd party strikes?

You might face delays and cancellations when other sectors of the airline industry go on strike. In fact, it’s not uncommon to see airport staff like ground crew or oil tanker employees go on strike. Air traffic controllers also have labour disputes that can affect travel plans.

Whenever these situations arise and lead to flight interruptions, Azores will always do its best to put you on the next available flight or give you a refund, but because these events are beyond their control, you won’t be eligible for compensation of any kind.

Still, if you’re left waiting for more than 2 hours at the airport, you’ll still be given refreshments and food vouchers, and hotel accommodation if you’re stuck overnight.
