When SkyEpress Flights are Affected by Strike-related Disruptions
Everytime the busy travel season approaches, passengers begin to hear about airline strikes. And if you have flights booked for the same dates as a strike, you might be wondering what options are open to you. Can you alter your booking? Can you cancel with a non-refundable ticket?
If you’re flying with SkyExpress, then you’ve come to the right place. We’re going to answer these questions and more, but if you want to quickly jump to compensation eligibility, then you can begin by adding your flight information in the link below.
Understanding SkyExpress Strikes
SkyExpress hasn’t had a strike in at least 7 years, but that doesn’t mean their flights won’t be affected. Sometimes, airports, air traffic control or another third party will go on strike, which leads to delays and cancellations.
When this happens, SkyExpress must comply with the rules of the region where they’re flying. So, for flights in Europe or the UK, the airline must provide passengers with help whenever they have flight disruptions, regardless of who called the strike.
What SkyExpress Will Do For You
- When there is an airline employee strike, (for example pilots or cabin crew), then you may be able to collect as much as 600 EUR from SkyExpress because of the inconvenience.
- If your flight is canceled because of any kind of strike, SkyExpress will give you the choice of a rebooking or a refund.
- If your flight is delayed by 2 hours or more and you’re at the airport, you’ll be provided with food and refreshments. These will usually be given to you as a voucher or coupon.
- You can also get a refund or a rebooking if your SkyExpress flight is delayed by 5 hours or more.
- If the flight disruption causes you to wait overnight, SkyExpress must provide hotel accommodation and a taxi, if you can’t get a shuttle.
- If you arrive at your destination 3 or more hours late because of an employee strike, then you can get repaid by SkyExpress for the trouble and inconvenience that it caused.
If the flight disruption was caused by an airport, air traffic control, or any other 3rd party strike, you will not be able to collect any form of repayment from SkyExpress, but the airline must still offer you the choice of a rebooking or a refund if your flight is canceled.
Steps to Take When a Strike Has Been Announced
As soon as you hear about a strike overlapping with your travel plans, you should take these steps:
- Check the airline’s alert pages for updates about if and how to make changes to your booking.
- Sign up for SMS and/or email alerts and download the SkyExpress app.
- If you want to make changes to a non-refundable ticket, contact the carrier to see if you can alter your booking or cancel it
Can You Make Changes to Your SkyExpress Flight?
If a strike is with the airline or at an airport that could affect your travel plans, here’s what you need to know about altering your booking:
- You can usually make changes or cancel a refundable ticket without additional fees, but always check the terms and conditions to be sure.
- For non-refundable tickets, contact the airline to see if they will allow you to make changes without incurring the extra fees.
- If you can’t make changes, wait until SkyExpress cancels your flight, so you can choose an alternate flight or a refund without fees.
Your Rights as a SkyExpress Passenger
All the rules we’ve mentioned here are set by Regulation EU261. This law protects you as a SkyExpress passenger whenever you have a disrupted flight set to depart from an EU or UK airport.
It stipulates that you can receive up to €600 in compensation if your flight is canceled or delayed as long as SkyExpress is at fault for the disruption. More specifically, if your flight is 3 or more hours late, then you could be eligible for some kind of repayment depending on the distance of your flight.
