Volotea hasn’t had a strike since 2018, but if you hear that one has been announced you might be feeling like your travel plans will be ruined. Well, take heart because you might be able to shift your flight or cancel. In the worst case, your flight will be suddenly canceled or delayed.

Before you get too stressed out, learn about your entitlements and rights as a Volotea passenger, or if you want to check to see if you could get compensation, just enter your flight details below.

4 Steps to prepare for a Volotea strike

  1. Sign up for notifications: If you haven’t already, sign up for Volotea alerts or download their mobile app to get updates if your flight is affected.
  2. Check for travel insurance: Check the coverage in your travel insurance. If you don’t have insurance, check your credit card to see if it offers some protection for strike-related flight disruptions.
  3. Pack for delays: Pack a carry-on with essential items for extended delays at the airport.
  4. Remember to document everything: If your Volotea flight is delayed or canceled, remember to start keeping a record of conversations you have with the airline, and collect boarding passes, receipts and other materials that can support your case if you decide to file a claim later on.

Can you modify your ticket with Volotea?

This depends on the kind of ticket you purchased. Let’s take a closer look.

  • Refundable tickets: You can change or cancel these without a fee, but always check the rules of your specific ticket to verify.
  • Non-refundable tickets: Contact Volotea to see if they will allow changes. Usually, airlines will allow some flexibility with changes if they know a strike could be disruptive to passengers.
  • If you can’t change your flight, then you can wait until your flight is canceled by Volotea. This way, you’ll have the choice of a rebooking (free of charge) or a refund.

Will Volotea help you if your flight is disrupted?

Yes! In fact, Volotea is required by law to keep you informed about any unfolding strike activity that may affect your travels. But they will also help you in the following ways if you have flight disruptions.

  • Canceled Flights and Extended Delays. Volotea will give you the choice of a rebooking at no extra charge OR a refund if your flight is canceled or delayed by 5 hours or more.
  • Flight delays. If you’re stuck at the airport for 2 or more hours, you’ll be given vouchers for meals and refreshments and, if you are delayed overnight, Volotea will provide hotel accommodation and transport. If you have to pay for these things yourself, keep your receipts for reimbursement.

Will Volotea repay you for the inconvenience?

If you end up arriving 3 or more hours late at your final destination, then Volotea may be required to pay you as much as 600 EUR as long as the strike was held by airline employees. Bear in mind that the strike must be announced.

However, if employees stopped working suddenly and without warning (a wildcat strike), then you will not be able to collect any repayment from the airline as these situations can’t be prevented or avoided by Volotea.

What happens with airport and other 3rd party strikes?

You might face delays and cancellations when other sectors of the airline industry go on strike. In fact, it’s not uncommon to see airport staff like ground crew or air traffic controllers go on strike.

If any of these situations arise and lead to flight interruptions, Volotea will try to put you on the next available flight or give you a refund. Still, if you’re left waiting for more than 2 hours at the airport, you’ll still be given refreshments and food vouchers, and hotel accommodation if you’re stuck overnight.

What are your rights as a Volotea passenger?

As a Volotea passenger, you’re protected by Regulation EU261 as long as you travel to, from, or within Europe. So, if you have strike-related delays or cancellations, you can expect some assistance from the airline, including repayment if you’re late by at least 3 hours.
