Norwegian, officially known as Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA, has been ranked by Conde Nast Traveler (CNTraveler) as the fifth best European Airline in 2023 with an 82.75% on-time arrival rating based on 82,791 flights. Despite being an award-winning airline, Norwegian, like all other carriers, is susceptible to flight disruptions like delays, cancellations and overbooking. In these instances, knowing your passenger rights is key. And that's where we come in!

EU Air Passenger Rights

EU261 is applicable to all flights departing from any country within the European Union and to flights landing in the EU from abroad, if the flight is operated by an EU-based airline, which includes Norwegian.

Passenger Rights in the UK

After leaving the EU, the United Kingdom established its own set of air passenger rights, known as the UK261 passenger rights law. This regulation mirrors EU261, offering comparable protections for passengers flying with a UK-based airline or taking off from a UK airport. 

UK261 addresses a range of flight disruptions, including cancellations, delays, instances of denied boarding, and missed connections, assuring the availability of rightful compensation. Like its EU counterpart, compensation under UK261 depends on the length of the delay and the distance of the flight. The compensation can typically go up to £520 per passenger.

Norwegian Flight Delays and Compensation

When it comes to flight delays, the EU261 legislation stipulates that passengers flying with airlines such as Norwegian have a certain set of rights. If your flight is delayed by more than 3 hours and this delay was because of circumstances within the airline's control, such as mechanical issues or airline staff problems, then you may be entitled to flight delay compensation. This compensation varies based on the length of the journey.

In a press release from August 2023, Norwegian stated the following about their on-time performance during the second quarter of that year:

“Punctuality, share of flights departing on schedule, was 81.5 percent in the quarter, up from 78.8 percent in the same period last year. Regularity, share of flights taking place, was 99.5 percent. Cirium, the global aviation consultancy, named Norwegian the most on-time European airline in May. In April, June, and July, Norwegian finished among the top three European airlines.”

Norwegian Cancelled Flight Compensation 

Your passenger rights also extend to flight cancellations. The EU261 legislation mandates that Norwegian, or any airline, must provide at least 14 days' notice for flight cancellations. If this notice is not provided, you may be entitled to compensation for cancellation. The exceptions to this rule are extraordinary circumstances that are beyond the airline's control.

Denied Boarding Compensation Rights

According to EU261 regulations, you're generally entitled to compensation if you're denied boarding on a Norwegian flight. This situation typically arises when an airline overbooks a flight and does not have enough seats for all passengers. My flight was cancelled 14 hours before departure at 10am due to technical reasons. I was told I would be contacted by norwegian air for rebooking options, but 3 hours later no one contacted me and I tried to call them, no one would pick up eventhough I waited on call for over 1 hour. I decided to cancel and rebook a flight from ryan air at 6.30am since norwegian air did not have any other flights to my destination that day, and it was important for me to get to my destination that day. Ryanair was the only other flight flying to my destination that day, and they had only 2 tickets left on thier website so I decided to book it before I lost any other opportunity to get to my destination in time. My norwegian air ticket was 669 SEK, and my last minute ryanair ticket was 3450 SEK, which is 5 times the price I paid orginally and was an extremely expensive and unaffordable amount for me to pay out of pocket. I am hoping to get some compensation for the increased cost to me due to paying for a last minute ticket, with norwegian air not giving me a choice because of non-responsive customer service and not having more flights that day and having such a last minute cancellation.

The flight was initially delayed because there was a problem with one of the engines so they had to check the engine over before takeoff. Subsequently to that there was a problem with air traffic control. Which caused the delay but had there not been a problem with the engine the flight would have left on time. My initial claim was refused C#2959997 as they are relying on the air traffic control issues. When there was no air traffic control issues when they were checking the engine.

Answer from the Norwegian as of 25.11.20: Unfortunately, Norwegian flight D8489 (PUY-HEL) 03.08.2019 was delayed by 4 hours and 17 minutes. This disruption was caused by extraordinary circumstances which could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. Flight Disruption Information Norwegian flight: D8489 (PUY-HEL) 03.08.2019 Disruption type: Delayed Delay time: 4 hours and 17 minutes Reason for disruption: This disruption was caused by the grounding of all Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, as imposed by European aviation authorities. Although we respect your request for compensation, we’re unable to honour your claim as this flight was delayed due to extraordinary circumstances. This is in accordance with the European Court of Justice Verdict C-549/07 Wallentin-Hermann. We apologise for the inconvenience caused on this occasion. Answer from Compensair as of 05.04.22: We have filed your claim to Norwegian Air International (D8) and received a rejection: The airline is bankrupt and is unable to make payouts to the passengers. Unfortunately, in this case we are unable to proceed and have to stop working on your application.
