Key Points

  1. If you have a Singapore Airlines delayed flight, you could get up to €600 in compensation in addition to refunds and reimbursements.
  2. If your flight is delayed by 2 hours or more, then Singapore Airlines must provide you with food, refreshments, and hotel stay (for overnight delays).
  3. The amount you’re compensated is determined by the distance you’re flying and the length of the delay.

What Are My Rights

If you’re departing from an EU airport, then your rights are protected by EU 261 Regulations. These regulations state that you could be owed up to €600 in compensation, in addition to refunds or reimbursements, if your Singapore Airlines flight was cancelled, delayed, or overbooked.

Singapore Airlines Flight Delay

If your flight is more than 3 hours late, then you could be eligible for compensation, but the amount you are compensated for a flight delay will depend on how long you were delayed and the distance you’re travelling.

Additionally, the delay must be caused by Singapore Airlines and not by extraordinary circumstances like dangerous weather, airport related disruptions, or air traffic control issues.

But in addition to regular delayed flight compensation, you may also be eligible for compensation if you missed your connecting flight because of the delay, and you arrived at your destination more than hours late.

When is Singapore Airlines Responsible for Flight Delays?

If the delay was caused by any of the following situations, then Singapore Airlines is liable:

  • Technical problems
  • Airline strikes
  • Other airline-related operational issues (if the pilot is unwell, etc)
  • Anything within the airline’s control

What if your Singapore Airlines delayed flight is late by more than 2 hours

If your flight is delayed by more than 2 hours, then you should be provided with care in the form of:

  • 2 free phone class, emails, or FAX messages
  • Complimentary food and drink
  • Complimentary hotel accommodation for long delays

Steps You Should Take When Your Singapore Airlines Flight is Delayed

When you learn that your Singapore Airlines flight has been delayed, you should take the following steps:

  1. Ask an airline representative what caused the delay
  2. Gather evidence to support your claim including photos of flight information boards, your booking number, and other documents.
  3. Ask the airline representatives for food, meal, and/or hotel vouchers if your flight is at least 2 hours late
  4. Check your eligibility for compensation with our free online compensation calculator.

PRO TIP:Be extra careful if you’re offered vouchers or asked to sign any release forms. Ask questions and read the fine print because accepting these could eliminate your chances of compensation.

Singapore Airlines Flight Cancellation

If your Singapore Airlines flight is cancelled less than 14 days before your scheduled departure, then EU law states that you may be able to receive up to €600 per person in compensation in addition to:

  • A full ticket refund as well as a return flight back to your original destination or
  • A replacement flight to your final destination.

If the Singapore Airlines offers you an alternate flight to your final destination, you don’t have to accept it. In fact, you have the following options to choose from:

  1. You can accept the alternate flight
  2. Request another flight that suits you
  3. Ask for reimbursement and/or a full refund if you are not happy with any of the options proposed.

Keep in mind that if Singapore Airlines offers you an alternate flight that arrives at your final destination close to when your original flight would have arrived, then they will not be required to pay you compensation.

On the other hand, if Singapore Airlines cancels your flight because of extraordinary circumstances and you weren’t offered a replacement flight, then you can get a full ticket refund since your booked flights were not available to you.

For many people, the cancellation happens at the last minute. You’ve checked your bags, you’re at the gate, and then you learn that your Singapore Airlines flight is cancelled. When this happens, the airline is required to provide you with:

  • 2 free cell phone calls, emails, or FAXes as well as free meals and refreshments
  • A refund of 30-70% of your original ticket price if the airline offers you a new flight with a lower seating class than the one you originally purchased.

Singapore Airlines Flight Refunds

Flight compensation and flight refunds are two different things. Fortunately, EU Regulations allow you to receive both: A cancellation refund and compensation.

Types of ticket refunds

Singapore Airlines can offer you refunds in 2 ways: A full refund or a voucher.

A full refund must be given to you in cash or credit while vouchers are offered only if you specifically agree to accepting one and the terms that apply. We do not recommend accepting vouchers due to their short expiry dates and potential redemption restrictions.

PRO TIP: You can generally reject alternative flights and receive a refund in full, if the new replacement flight arrives 3 or more hours later than your initial scheduled arrival time.

When to Claim Compensation from Singapore Airlines

You have up to six years to contact Singapore Airlines and collect your compensation and ticket refunds.

The Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore diverted to Frankfurt, Germany due to technical issues. This led to a number of changed flights and delays and meant I arrived in Brisbane almost 40 hours later than I should have. In Frankfurt we were sent to hotels as our replacement flight wouldn't be available until the following afternoon. Upon arrival in Singapore I had a 9 hour layover which I was sent to another hotel which was more inconvenient than anything as the hotel was a 40 minute drive from the airport. They were unable to put me on another direct Singapore to Brisbane flight and I ended up flying Singapore to Sydney (on British Airlines) and then Sydney to Brisbane (on Virgin). When we were close to landing in Sydney I was told that I had been moved onto a later flight to Brisbane as it was looking like I wasn't going to make the 9am Virgin flight I had originally been put on. This new flight was at 8pm on Jetstar which is an unacceptably long layover (11 hours) especially when I shouldn't have had to go through Sydney at all. After speaking to customer service at both Virgin and Jetstar, Jetstar were able to move me onto an earlier flight at about 10am.
