Our Flight Delay Compensation Calculator

The tickets bought, the suitcases packed, the journey is ahead, the airport is already noisy and bustling around... And suddenly - like a bolt from the blue: the flight was delayed!

Don't panic. The main responsibility of any airline is to make sure that you arrive at your destination on time. If a long delay catches you at the airport, you could be entitled to compensation of up to €600 (£520). To find out how much, use our flight delay compensation calculator. Just enter your flight details and we'll show you exactly how much you can claim.

Flight compensation regulation, or Regulation EC261, is among EU-regulated laws. It covers flight delays and enforcing the rights of air passengers.

flight delayed

The regulation includes the list of criteria required to be eligible for compensation. The rule of thumb is that you can claim compensation for flight delays ONLY if you arrive late at your final destination by 3 hours or more.

It does not matter what your citizenship is or where you live. You can claim compensation for the following:

  • all flights departing from an EU airport
  • all flights operated by an EU airline

Compensation in Case of Extraordinary circumstances

Sometimes flight delays are caused by extraordinary circumstances when an airline does not have to pay the compensation. Such cases outside the airline's control include bad weather, air traffic control, terrorism, airport employee strikes, political unrest, etc.

Check if your flight delay qualifies for compensation with our flight delay checker.

Some airlines are reluctant to pay flight compensation. And as a general excuse, they explain that the technical faults with aircraft are the reason for delay. For this reason, different national EU courts involved the European Court of Justice.

They asked the Court to clarify provisions of EC261 regarding the extraordinary circumstances that result in flight disruptions.

In case of technical faults, the Court of Appeal recognizes even unexpected issues as the airline's fault. Thus it cannot be classified as an extraordinary circumstance.

People in the airport

Almost 90% of air passengers do not claim compensation because they do not know that they have such a right. Those who know prefer to avoid stressing time-consuming court trials.

With our EU261 compensation calculator, you can check whether you are eligible for compensation and your delayed flight compensation amount. It takes less than 2 minutes.

If you are entitled to compensation, we will help you to obtain it. Since we don’t take any upfront payments, you have nothing to lose. So why not give it a try?

Valid for UK Flights

You can also use our flight compensation calculator to check for flights that are departing from UK or are operated by an UK airline.

After Brexit, the British authorities created the commonly known UK 261 law that covers air passenger rights. The new law copies the EU Regulation that was applicable in the UK before Brexit.

Thus, you now have the same rights in the UK as well, not just when it comes to flight delay but also cancellation, denied boarding or missed connecting flights.

Can I Get Missed Connecting Flight Compensation?

How much is flight delay compensation in case of missed connection flights? Can you claim it at all?

If you have a flight with one or more connections within a single ticket, it is viewed as a whole in the EU-regulated laws. This means that EU Regulation EC261 covers such a flight with all connections and the airline must provide compensation.

You are eligible for compensation for the delays at any point of the journey, no matter whether the connecting flight departed from an EU or non-EU airport. Only the following criteria have to be satisfied:

  • your flight departs from an EU airport, or is operated by EU airline, and
  • the delay at the final destination is more than 3 hours

Let’s assume you have a flight from Paris to Sydney with a stopover in Tokyo. Here are some possible flight delay scenarios:

  1. Your initial flight from Paris to Tokyo was delayed by less than 3 hours, but you missed the connecting flight from Tokyo to Sydney: you are entitled to compensation.
  2. Your connecting flight from Tokyo to Sydney is delayed by more than three hours: you are entitled to compensation since the initial flight departed from the EU airport.
  3. Your initial flight from Paris to Tokyo is more than 3 hours late, but you manage to catch a connecting flight and arrive in Sydney on time: you are not entitled to compensation since you arrived at your final destination without delay.

Does Delayed Flight Compensation Amount Depend On The Price of My Plane Ticket?

Delayed Flight Compensation

Flight delay compensation amounts do not depend on the price of your flight ticket. They are defined by the distance of your flight.

The only exception is that you are entitled to compensation of up to €400 (£350) for the delayed flights departing and arriving entirely within the EU.

For example, if you had a flight from Paris to Tenerife, you are eligible for compensation of €400 (£350) only even though the distance between the cities is more than 3,500km.

Flight Compensation Calculator FAQ

How to calculate flight delays?

When claiming flight compensation, the only calculation you need to make is to determine the flight distance. As long as the delay is of at least 3 hours, the compensation amount you can get varies according to flight distance.

How much is compensation for flight delayed 5 hours?

Flight delay compensation claims for flights delayed for 5 hours or more as identical to those that you make if you landed 3 hours later than the original time. The only difference is that after 5 hours you can also ask for a refund.

How is the 3 hour flight delay calculated?

The 3-hour delay is calculated at landing. If the cabin crew opens the airplane door, at arrival, 3 hours later than the initial time, you are entitled to compensation.
