Let’s start with the good news: Jet2 cancelled flights are rare. The airline is a leader in the UK for this type of disruption and routinely has fewer than 1% of its flights cancelled. The news for delays isn’t as good, although even with a much higher number of delays, Jet2 remains above average. Luckily, from 2022 to 2023, the flight disruptions decreased for the airline, showing an overall positive trend.

Since we don’t have the complete data from 2023, we’ll use a weighted average in our discussion. Overall, your chance of encountering Jet2 flights cancelled today is 0.067%, which is exceptionally low.

Jet2 can be proud that typically, during the peak summer travel season, it simply does not cancel flights. In July and August of 2022, the low-cost charter airline didn’t cancel a single flight. The same goes for May 2023. It’s safe to say that Jet2 is a solid choice when you don’t want to risk your flight being cancelled.

On the flip side, the overall risk of experiencing a Jet2 delayed flight is 26.08%. And to break things down even further, less than 1 Jet2 flight out of 1000 gets cancelled, and between 2 and 3 out of 10 flights get delayed.

Advice For When Jet2 Flights are Cancelled

The first recommendation is don’t panic. Jet2 cancelled flights can often be easily re-booked to minimize the impact of your vacation.

Flight Cancellations - Why Do They Happen?

We now know that Jet2 flight cancellations are exceedingly rare, but the likelihood of such a disruption still isn’t zero. Here are some answers to the common question of why is Jet2 cancelling flights:

  • Not enough staff, including pilots and cabin crews.
  • Bad weather that makes for unsafe flying, takeoff, or landing conditions.
  • Jet2 strikes and strikes by essential groups, like ground crews, baggage handlers, and air traffic control (ATC).
  • Issues with the planes, whether mechanical or maintenance-related.
  • Too many unsold seats.
  • Insufficient ATC staff.

Airports and Routes with Frequent Jet2 Flight Cancellations or Delays

Due to a significant issue with air traffic control in the UK in August 2023, a much higher-than-average number of Jet2 flights were cancelled. Between August 28 and 29th, Jet2 cancelled more than 20 flights. This is a huge increase when you remember that for the first 6 months of 2023, only 83 total flights were cancelled.

The Jet2 airports most affected by these ATC issues were Manchester and Leeds. Jet2 is based in Leeds and runs many flights from here, so although the airport is small, the impact was large on Jet2’s passengers. Multiple Jet2 flights to Crete, Ibiza, and Majorca were cancelled.

Also, at the end of July and into August 2023, Jet2’s routes to Catania Airport in Sicily had to be cancelled entirely due to a fire. Although this is an isolated incident, it’s helpful to remember that your Jet2 flights can get cancelled for many reasons, and only some are the airline's fault.

Tips For Avoiding Jet2 Cancelled Flights

To avoid booking a Jet2 flight that might be cancelled, try to:

  • Avoid the airports with the most Jet2 cancelled flights, like Leeds and Manchester. Birmingham and Liverpool may be better options.
  • Fly early in the day. Jet2 flights are less likely to be cancelled or delayed due to issues encountered on the plane’s routes before it gets to you.
  • Go direct. Jet2 long-haul flights aren’t common, and as a charter, the chances are good their routes already get you where you want to be. But if you can take a connecting flight for cheaper, don’t. Delays can easily cause you to miss a connection.
  • Stay up-to-date. Use the airport’s and Jet2’s websites to track your flight’s status. Then, at least, you can react proactively to flight delays or cancellations.
