Will EVA Go on Strike?
The chances that EVA Air employees go on strike are pretty low. The last time this happened was in 2019 when flight attendants stopped working for 17 days. This led to roughly 2,250 cancelled flights affecting around 400,000 passengers according to Labor Notes.
In 2024, EVA pilots threatened to go on strike but an agreement was reached so the work stoppage was ultimately avoided. But this brings up an interesting point. Flights can be cancelled prior to a strike taking place even if it is eventually resolved.
Steps to Take When You Hear About an EVA Strike
So, what should you do if you find out that a strike is coinciding with your travel plans?
First, you should download the EVA app and sign up for email or SMS alerts so you can stay up to date as soon as anything changes with your flight.
Then, if you want to shift your booking to another date or cancel, check your ticket and see if the terms and conditions will let you do this. If you can’t, or if you have a non-refundable ticket, don’t hesitate to contact EVA because, given a pending strike, they might make an exception.
How EVA Will Assist Your if Your Flight is Disrupted
EVA is a Taiwanese airline, but if you are scheduled to depart from an airport in the European Union or United Kingdom, you can expect the airline to help you if you have strike-related delays or cancellations.
- For cancelled flights or delays lasting 5 hours or more, you’re entitled to choose between a flight refund or a rebooking on the next flight available. This must be provided at no extra charge.
- For delays that last 2 hours or more, you must be given food and refreshment as well as 2 free calls, texts, or emails.
- For delays that last until the following day, EVA must provide a hotel stay and transport.
- For delays that cause you to arrive 3 or more hours late, EVA may have to pay you as much as 600 EUR in compensation as long as there was nothing they could do to avoid the strike.
This is important because sometimes delays and cancellations occur because of a third party strike like an airport or ground staff at the airport. This is something EVA can’t control, so if your flight is impacted then you will still get a refund or a rebooking, but you will not be eligible for repayment.
Can You Alter Your EVA Flight?
You can alter your flight if you have a refundable ticket, but if you have a non-refundable ticket, you might have to speak with an EVA agent to see if they will let you make changes or cancel.
If none of these options work, then your best bet is to let EVA cancel your flight because then you will get refunded or given a replacement flight without any fees.
Your Rights as a Passenger
All the rules we’ve mentioned here are set by Regulation EU261 and UK261. This law protects you whenever you depart from an airport in these regions. If you happen to be travelling in another part of the world, you will be covered by the laws of that country.
