How To Claim Compensation From British Airways Yourself

Wait up to 20+ weeks to find out if you have a claim

You won’t know if you have a claim until it is accepted or rejected if you file alone.

To claim on your own:

  1. Fill in British Airways feedback and claims form. This takes around 30 minuets (then)
  2. Wait for a reply. The industry average is around 4 weeks (then)
  3. Handle delays and pushbacks yourself (then)
  4. Fill in a CEDR complaint application form after 8 weeks if your claim has been rejected or ignored.
  5. Wait up to 12 weeks+ for the CEDR to confirm if your claim has been accepted.

What To Do if Your British Airways Flight Is Cancelled or You Are Delayed
  1. Take a photo of your flight status.

  2. Speak to a British Airways representative and find out the cause of your cancellation or delay.

British Airways may try to use extraordinary circumstances to avoid paying out when a claim is filed, but if you are told differently, it makes a strong case.

  3. Act quickly.

Early claims have a 67-72% higher success rate.

  4. Ask British Airways if you can get care and assistance

You may be entitled to care and assistance from British Airways depending how long you have been delayed and where in the world you are delayed.

  5. Keep receipts for any food, drink, accommodation, or transfers you pay for.

Keeping your receipts for things that should be covered under care and assistance but are not provided or is inadequate increases your chances of having it reimbursed.

These expenses must be deemed ‘reasonable’ by British Airways. For example 1 overnight stay in a value or moderately priced hotel.

  6. If you are offered vouchers or benefits, read the small print before making a decision.

You can’t claim compensation if you accept a voucher or benefits like airmiles. Often, vouchers have blackout and expiry dates, meaning up to 82% of them go unused.

British Airways FAQs

British Airways Compensation

plus

How long do I have to wait to get compensation from British Airways?

minus

British Airways should respond to your claim for compensation within a ‘reasonable time frame’ which is generally accepted to be around 6 weeks.

If you choose to file a claim alone, you stand a greater chance of having your claim approved if you:

  • Follow these tips.
  • Complete the British Airways feedback and claims form (this takes around 30 minuets).
  • Escalate your claim to the CEDR after 8 weeks if it hasn’t been resolved by filling in their complaint application form.

Alternatively you can use our compensation checker to find out how much you are entitled to and ask our skilled lawyers do the hard work for you.

This takes much less time and has a greater chance of success. Our 98% success rate is due to specialist knowledge, experience, and our reputation for not giving up.

Airlines have been known to refuse compensation to deserving passengers when they make claims without legal help, but this is unlikely to happen with AirAdvisor claims. And if it does, we will take them to court.

Can I get compensation for British Airways flight delays, cancellation, or denied boarding under UK261?

plus

You are entitled to compensation in the case of BA flight cancellation, delay, or denied boarding under UK261 legislation for departures and arrivals with BA on direct flights and connecting flights under most circumstances as long as:

  • A cancellation was announced less than 14 days before departure.
  • The delay or cancellation wasn’t caused by extraordinary circumstances.
  • You didn’t accept an alternate flight that arrived less than 3 hours after your scheduled arrival time.
  • You didn’t accept vouchers or other benefits in the event of denied boarding.

To get an idea of the amount of compensation you may be owed for direct flights, check out the compensation section of this page.

Other rules are in place for connecting flights and direct flights that do not include a UK airport.

Airlines are much more likely to pay out the faster a claim is made! Don’t miss out, get the compensation you are owed by using our compensation checker now.

What extraordinary circumstances could mean British Airways won’t pay compensation?

plus

British Airways may consider any of the following an extraordinary circumstance and not pay compensation. We will always fight for your compensation if we believe British Airways is using one of these as an excuse to avoid paying you what you deserve

  • Severe weather conditions
  • Natural disasters
  • Air traffic control restrictions
  • Airport or runway closures
  • Political or security issues
  • Bird strikes (this can include collisions with other wildlife)
  • Aircraft manufacturing defects
  • Medical emergencies
  • Industrial action/strikes (you should still be compensated if it is British Airways staff that are striking rather than third-party staff)
  • Acts of sabotage or terrorism
  • Unavoidable technical issues caused by to external factors, such as damage to the plane by objects on the runway

The definition British Airways uses for extraordinary circumstances will most likely be based on UK261 legislation. There may be some instances however where other legislation is used.

AirAdvisor will always fight on your behalf to make sure that British Airways is not using extraordinary circumstances to unfairly deny your claim.

Can I claim compensation on a rerouted British Airways flight?

plus

Yes, ordinarily, if your rerouted flight meets the criteria for compensation set out by UK261 legislation, then you can claim compensation.

There are more considerations for connecting flights and direct flights that do not involve a UK airport.

As it can get a little complicated, you might find it easier to simply check your eligibility using our compensation checker. It’s completely free and there is no commitment to make a claim.

Can I claim compensation for a connecting British Airways flight?

plus

Your BA compensation for denied boarding on a connecting flight and a cancelled or delayed connecting flight which connects in the UK is protected under UK261 as long as:

  • Your connected flights are part of a single booking (and)
  • Your flight into the UK is with BA or another UK airline (and)
  • The cancellation or delay (including a delay resulting from denied boarding) affects your arrival time at your final destination.

If your flight does not connect in the UK then you may still be covered under legislation from the UK and other countries as long as your connected flights are part of a single booking and the cancellation affects your arrival time at your final destination.

  • If one of your flights departs from the UK, that flight will be covered under UK261.
  • If one of your flights arrives in the UK and is a BA (or other UK airline) flight, that flight will be covered under UK261.
  • If one of your flights departs from the EU (or its additional locations), the flight departing from this area will be covered under EU261, which has comparable compensation amounts to UK261.
  • If your flight departs elsewhere in the world you may be protected by that country’s legislation. This can get a little complex, so it might be best to let AirAdvisor handle it.

To see the amount of compensation you may be due for your cancelled or delayed connecting flight, use this easy compensation checker.

Can I claim compensation for a direct British Airways flight that doesn’t involve the UK?

plus

The new UK 261 legislation protects the majority of direct BA flights as they include a UK airport.

If you have a direct flight that does not include the UK, then your right to compensation may still be covered under legislation from other countries.

Finding out if you are due compensation can be a little difficult by yourself. Fortunately you can find out if you are entitled to compensation with this easy compensation checker.

Where in the world can I claim compensation under EU261 legislation?

plus

You can claim under EU261 in any EU member state (a country in the EU).

Additional countries, territories, and outermost regions (OMRs) of EU member states in which you can claim compensation from an airline under EU261 regulations are:

Countries

  • Iceland
  • Norway
  • Switzerland
  • Liechtenstein

European territories

  • Åland Islands (autonomous region of Finland)
  • Gibraltar (UK)

Outermost Regions (OMR) of EU Member States

France

  • French Guiana
  • Guadeloupe
  • Martinique
  • Réunion
  • Mayotte
  • Saint-Martin (French part only)

Portugal

  • Madeira
  • Azores

Spain

  • Canary Islands (not the Faeroe Islands)

British Airways Refunds and Rerouting

plus

What are my rights to refunds and rerouting on British Airways flights?

minus

Under UK261 legislation you are entitled to the choice of a refund or rebooking onto another BA flight in the following situations:

  • Your were denied boarding because BA overbooked your flight (or)
  • Your flight was cancelled within 14 days of departure (or)
  • Your arrival at your destination is delayed by 5+ hours as a result of a delay rather than a cancellation.

If you experience a 5+ hour delay on the second or subsequent legs of a connected flight covered by UK261, you are entitled to rerouting to your next destination, or a refund for the unused portion of your ticket. You can also claim a return flight to your original departure point.

Direct flights are typically covered under UK261. But if your flight doesn’t involve a UK airport, or you have a connecting flight, you may be covered under legislation from other counties.

If you want to claim a refund alongside your compensation, we can help you. Simply use our compensation checker and when prompted, tell us how much your flight cost.

Are British Airways flights refundable?

plus

Some British Airways flight tickets are refundable. Those with ‘flexible’ in the name are more likely to be refundable, but you should always check your specific ticket’s terms.

If you booked a flight directly with British Airways that is not due to depart within the next 24 hours, then you may cancel the booking and receive a full refund as long as you cancel it within 24 hours.

You can do this by going to the Manage My Booking page, or by calling the British Airways contact centre number.

If you prefer to speak to someone, you may find this British Airways Contact Information page helpful - but be sure to change the country at the top of the page so that it reflects where you are from.

Unfortunately bookings made on ba.com (British Airways Holidays) cannot be cancelled within the 24 hour window.

If there has been significant disruption to your flight, you may be able to claim a refund from British Airways. Most British Airways flights will be eligible for a refund if British Airways is to blame. You can find out more about refunds and rerouting here.

Click here if you want to learn about refunds for flight disruptions on connecting flights.

And here for refunds for flight disruptions on flights that do not involve the UK.

Can I be rerouted or request a refund for a connecting British Airways flight?

plus

The new UK261 legislation protects your right to chose between rerouting (being placed on a different flight) or a refund when something disrupts your second or subsequent flights on a connecting flight. You also have the right to claim a return flight to your original departure point.

The above applies in the case of denied boarding on a connecting flight and a cancelled or delayed connecting flight which connects in the UK as long as:

  • Your were denied boarding because BA overbooked your flight (or)
  • Your flight was cancelled within 14 days of departure (or)
  • Your arrival at your destination is delayed by 5+ hours as a result of a delay rather than a cancellation.
  • Your connected flights are part of a single booking (and)
  • The cancellation or delay (including a delay resulting from denied boarding) affects your arrival time at your final destination (and)
  • Your flight into the UK is with BA or another UK airline

If your flight does not connect in the UK then you may still be covered under UK261 legislation and legislation from other countries as long as your connected flights meet conditions 1-5 above. In this case:

  • If one of your flights departs from the UK, that flight will be covered under UK261.
  • If one of your flights arrives in the UK and is a BA (or other UK airline) flight, that flight will be covered under UK261.
  • If one of your flights departs from the EU (or its additional locations), the flight departing from this area will be covered under EU261, which has the similar rules regarding rerouting and refunds as UK261 with some small differences.
  • If your flight departs elsewhere in the world you may be protected by that country’s legislation. This can get a little complex, so it might be best to let AirAdvisor handle it if you cannot resolve it with your airline on the day.

If you have a direct flight that does not include the UK then you may still be covered under legislation from the EU and other countries.

Can I be rerouted or request a refund for a direct British Airways flight that doesn’t involve the UK?

plus

If you have a direct flight that does not include the UK then you may still be able to request a reroute or refund in the event of denied boarding, cancellation, or delay. This may be covered under legislation from your departure or arrival country.

If your flights departs from the EU (or its additional locations), the flight departing from this area will be covered under EU261, which has the similar rules regarding rerouting and refunds as UK261 with some small differences.

The legislation from other countries can be harder to understand, so it may be best to let AirAdvisor handle your claim for a refund if you cannot resolve it with the airline on the day.

Will British Airways provide another flight if I miss connecting flight?

plus

If you miss a connecting flight with British Airways because of delays on an earlier flight, you may be able to:

What you are entitled to will depend if your flight is covered under UK261, EU261, or other country specific legislation.

If you miss a connecting flight and there wasn’t a delay on an earlier flight in your journey, British Airways may be able to help you catch another flight, but this will be at their discretion.

British Airways Care and Assistance

plus

Will British Airways provide assistance if my flight is cancelled, delayed, or I am denied boarding?

minus

Care and assistance must be provided in line with UK261 legislation to passengers on any flights protected by UK261.

Care and assistance covers food and drink, overnight accommodation and transport to the accommodation.

You can read more about compensation and care and assistance entitlement under UK261 for delays, denied boarding, and waits for a rerouted flight.

Care and assistance for passengers that are not covered by UK261 or EU261 may be impacted by the country you are delayed in. Each country will have its own rules about what airlines are required to do.

In some countries, such as the USA, providing any care and assistance is not required. But British Airways may provide similar provisions as those required under UK and EU law as a gesture of goodwill.

You should speak to a British Airways representative or a representative of the airline you are flying with under your British Airways ticket to get the care and assistance you need.

What should I do if British Airways doesn’t provide assistance?

plus

If you are forced to pay for the following yourself and the amount you pay is deemed ‘reasonable’ by the airline, you may be able to claim the expenses back.

For example 1 moderately priced table service meal for lunch during a 3 hour delay could be considered a ‘reasonable’ expense.

We will help you claim for expenses alongside your compensation claim.

Claim the compensation and expenses you deserve through our compensation checker.

plus

minus

Whilst we need to pay our people, we are here to serve you. That’s why we only charge 30% on standard claims - the lowest in the market.

For claims that need fighting in person in court proceedings, we have charge 50% commission, which is the industry average.

Why should I ask AirAdvisor for help instead of claiming compensation on my own?

plus

AirAdvisor has a long history of established working practices with airlines all over the world. Airlines are much more motivated to pay compensation to passengers through AirAdvisor than when they claim as an individual.

This advantage comes because airlines know that AirAdvisor will take them to court to fight for compensation, which is something most people can’t afford to do alone.

Airlines want to avoid costly legal proceedings and AirAdvisor’s many lawyers with their wealth of experience across multiple countries poses more of a threat to them.

Thousands of cases are handled by AirAdvisor lawyers in courts every day and we have an overall success rate of 98%.

You can file alone, and we have a guide to doing this right here. But if you want a low-stress and fast payout with a high chance of success, then use our compensation checker now to start your claim.
