Delayed, damaged, or lost baggage on JetBlue Airways? Under the Montreal Convention, you could be owed up to $1,920 in compensation. We handle everything — you just submit your details.
So, JetBlue lost your bags. Now what? Well, we’re going to show you exactly what to do to find your lost baggage and get compensated for it being mishandled or damaged. Getting the money you’re entitled to from airlines can be a challenge, but this guide should help you figure out which rights apply and when, and will give you all the steps you need to submit a JetBlue compensation claim.
If you’re flying within the United States, then your rights are protected by the US Department of Transportation. Their rules require that airlines compensate travelers up to $4,700 if your bags are delayed, lost, or damaged in the US.
Meanwhile, if you’re flying internationally, then your rights concerning baggage issues are protected by the Montreal Convention. This international treaty says that airlines must pay passengers up to $2,080 for lost, delayed, or damaged bags.
Delayed Checked Baggage Compensation Liability Limits | |
Domestic Flights | Up to $4,700 USD |
International Flights | Up to $2,080 USD |
As soon as you realize you have a baggage issue, the first and most important step to take is alerting JetBlue. This step is important because you have to give the airline a chance to find your bags before you can file a compensation claim. So, if you skip this step, you won’t be eligible for compensation.

When you made your report, you were given a number. It will be called a Property Irregularity Report Number or a File Reference Number. Use this information to track the status of your baggage. Once JetBlue locates it, they will either ship it to you at the address you provided in the report, or you can pick it up at the airport.
While you’re waiting for JetBlue to locate your baggage, you can buy replacement essentials like toiletries and clothing, especially if you’re away from home. Keep your receipts and limit your purchases to true essentials if you plan to add these purchases to your compensation claim. It’s important to note that JetBlue might not be willing to reimburse you for these expenses if they are not essential or if you arrived at home when your bags went missing.
If your baggage was damaged after a JetBlue flight, then begin gathering all your supporting documents for your compensation claim.
Here’s what you’ll need for your compensation claim:

If JetBlue didn’t return your baggage to you, you have up to 21 days to file a claim for compensation. Likewise, if they returned your bag to you, you have up to 21 days to file a reimbursement claim for the essential items you had to purchase.
As with lost baggage, you have up to 21 days to file a claim for damaged baggage compensation. Also, be aware that JetBlue will not compensate you for any of the following kinds of damage:
JetBlue will not compensate you for damages caused by the TSA. If your baggage was damaged by the TSA, they will leave you a notification inside your baggage or on the outside. This information will tell you what steps to take. You can also call them: 866-289-9673
You can file your claim on the JetBlue site. Once you upload all the required documentation, an airline agent will contact you about their decision within 28 days, but this can sometimes take longer.

If your baggage is delayed, then you should make a report with the airline. Usually baggage is located and returned within 48 hours, but it’s important to file a report in case your baggage isn’t found. Also, when you make a report, you can use the Property Irregularity Report number to track the status of your delayed baggage.
If you lost your carry-on or any other personal items on the plane or in the airport, contact the airport Lost and Found service. If you report your lost items with the lost and found office, they can track and match your information against a database of items turned in to them.
It depends. JetBlue and most other airlines won’t repay you for fragile or expensive items packed in your suitcase. You can always file a report and a compensation claim, just be sure to provide as much support for your case as possible.
