How a Delayed or Canceled International Flight Can Lead to Cash Compensation
If you've had a flight delay or cancellation with an airline in Europe or the UK OR if you were departing from those countries, you could be owed up to $650 in compensation, thanks to EU261 and UK261 air passenger rights regulations.
This is where AirAdvisor’s Compensation Calculator comes into play!
When you enter your flight information, our calculator tells you exactly how much airline compensation you could be owed quickly and easily.
Almost 90% of air passengers do not claim compensation because they do not know that they have such a right. Don’t leave money on the table! Get started on your claim today!
How Much Compensation Can You Get for Flight Disruptions?
If you have a flight delay, your compensation payout will be based on:
- How late you arrive at your final destination
- The distance of your flight
- Whether the airline was responsible for the delay
So, if you arrive 3 or more hours later than your originally scheduled arrival time, then you become eligible for airline compensation. Makes sense, right?
Can US Passengers Get Compensated for Canceled Flights?
Yes! If you were flying with a European or UK airline OR if you depart from an airport in these areas, then you could get cash compensation if:
- Your flight is canceled within 14 days of departure, and
- The airline could have avoided the cancellation
The amount you receive is based on the distance of your flight. If you opted for a rebooking, the amount you get is based on the distance and your ultimate arrival time.
What are the Payout Amounts for EU and UK261 Compensation?
Here’s the exciting part! Based on the deciding factors we just mentioned, US passengers could be entitled to the amounts listed below:
Distance of Your Flight | Compensation Payout |
Less than 932 miles (1,500 km) | $250 |
Between 932 - 2,175 miles (1,500-3,500 km) | $430 |
Over 2,175 miles (3,500 km) | $650 |
What US Passengers Need to Check Their Compensation Eligibility

Does the Ticket Price Affect Compensation?
No. The compensation amounts do not depend on the price of your flight ticket. Compensation is only based on delay length, airline culpability, distance of your flight, and if your flight was canceled, when you received notification.
Do You Have to Be a Citizen of the EU or UK to Qualify?
No! Anyone can be eligible for compensation.
- If your flight departed from the US heading to Europe, you are protected if it was operated by a European or UK airline like British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, Iberia, etc.
- If your flight departed from Europe or the UK, you are protected under EU261 or UK261 regardless of the airline.
- For flights within the US, EU/UK rules don’t apply. While US law doesn’t guarantee cash compensation like EU261, the U.S Department of Transportation requires airlines to provide refunds if your flight is canceled or significantly changed, and many airlines offer vouchers, rebooking, or travel credits.
