Compensation Basics

In most regions, airlines are responsible for getting you to your final destination close to the time you were supposed to arrive. If they don’t do this, you could be in a position to get as much as $650 in compensation, thanks to EU261 and UK261 air passenger rights regulations.

This is where AirAdvisor’s Compensation Calculator comes into play!

When you enter your flight information, our calculator will tell you exactly how much airline compensation you could be owed quickly and easily.

warning

Surprisingly, almost 90% of air passengers do not claim compensation because they do not know that they have such a right. Don’t leave money on the table! Get started on your claim today!

How Compensation Payouts are Calculated

The laws in Europe and the UK state that the amount of compensation you receive from the airline is based on the length of your delay and the distance you’ve traveled.

Flight Delay Compensation

If you have a flight delay, your compensation payout will be based on:

  • How late you arrive at your final destination,
  • The distance of your flight, and
  • Whether the airline was responsible for the delay.

So, if you arrive 3 or more hours later than your originally scheduled arrival time, then you become eligible for airline compensation. Makes sense, right?

Canceled Flight Compensation

Canceled flight compensation is determined by:

  • When the flight was canceled
  • The distance of your flight, and
  • Whether the airline was responsible for the cancellation.

How Much Does an Airline Have to Compensate Passengers?

Here’s the exciting part! Based on the deciding factors we just mentioned, you could be entitled to the amounts listed below!

Distance of Your Flight

Compensation Payout

Less than 932 miles (1,500 km)

Between 932 - 2,175 miles (1,500-3,500 km)

Over 2,175 miles (3,500 km)

What You’ll Need to Check Your Compensation Eligibility

To check your eligibility and how much compensation you could receive, you’ll need to provide information about your flight(s) including:

  • Travel dates
  • Departing and arrival airports
  • Your airline
  • Information on the flight disruption
  • Why your flight was delayed or canceled (it’s OK if you don’t know)

Don’t worry if you don’t have all the information. Each step gives you options in a drop-down menu so you can choose the answer that fits. Once you start a claim, we’ll request additional documentation and details, so you can get the maximum payout possible. Sounds good, right?

The only exception is that you are entitled to compensation of up to $425 for the delayed flights departing and arriving entirely within the EU.

tip
