The World’s 3 Best Airports 2026 – AirAdvisor’s Ranking of Performance and Passenger Experience

To determine the world’s best airports for 2026, we researched airports relevant to travelers from the UK and the USA, considering travel patterns and preferences. This resulted in a ranking that includes 23 of the most-used airports and excludes the less relevant ones.

It’s easy to regurgitate charts published by government bodies, but they don’t give you the whole story. We’ll explore all the factors that contribute to a positive overall travel experience.

  • London Heathrow is the best airport in the world, based on 6 metrics.
  • Paris Charles de Gaulle is the worst-ranking airport.
  • Our 6 metrics take into account: punctuality in 2025, Google reviews, Skytrax ranking, shopping, distance from the city, and the transfer cost to the city centre.
  • Compared to our 2023 ranking, Madrid-Barajas and Athens Eleftherios Venizelos dropped significantly – 9 and 8 places, respectively.
  • Also, compared to 2023, the biggest jumps in rankings were with Tenerife South Airport (7 places) and Dublin Airport (6 places).

Methodology

Our focus is on the 23 airports that are commonly used by passengers from the US and the UK. Our thinking: If British and North American passengers rarely visit these airports, why include them?

A mix of sources eliminates bias and focuses on the big picture that we’re after:

  • Punctuality – This is a measure of on-time flights according to Eurocontrol. The higher the on-time flight percentage of the airport, the higher the score. To get this score, we included the complete data from 2025, so it’s the most relevant.
  • Google reviews – We looked at the star rating for each of the airports to get the average score out of 5. This amounts to a total of over 1,104,435 reviews.
  • Transfer cost – We researched using airport and transportation websites alongside Rome2Rio to get the average cost of a transfer to the nearest city from the airport. The lower the transfer cost, the higher the score. Conversely, the higher the cost, the lower the rank.
  • Transfer distance – We calculated the average distance for a transfer to the nearest city using Google Maps. Time is of the essence when you’re on vacation, so shorter distances rank higher.
  • Shopping experience – When you need to kill time between flights, shopping is always fun (and useful). We used the Google reviews from the airport’s shops to get a score out of 5.
  • Skytrax rating – Skytrax is a global aviation ranking system that assesses various factors. For airports, it’s everything from terminal design and cleanliness to passenger flow and the website. The result is a star rating out of 5, with 5 being the most prestigious. These star ratings are used as a global benchmark.

As travellers, too, we know that some things are more important than others. We weighted the categories to favour punctuality and Google reviews, which are likely to have a bigger impact on traveller satisfaction. The other criteria are important to a positive overall journey, but less so. Here’s what we used:

London Heathrow Airport

London Heathrow Airport (LHR) – World’s Best Airport 2026

In our 2023 review of the world’s best airports, Athens came out on top. Due to issues with punctuality in 2025, this busy Greek airport fell to the 9th spot overall. That made room for London Heathrow:

  • This major hub served 84.5 million passengers in 2025 and still managed to maintain a rate of on-time departures of 79.14% (third overall).
  • London Heathrow has the best selection of shops and restaurants of any airport (tied with Rome Fiumicino).
  • Although it doesn’t quite make the top 3, Heathrow’s Google review average sits at a very respectable 4 stars out of 5.
  • Final score of 16.94.
16.94
2
Dublin Airport

Dublin Airport (DUB) – World’s Best Mid-Size Airport 2026

Dublin Airport has climbed our world airport rankings significantly since 2023. The airport moved up 6 spots from 8th place. The only airport to do better comparatively was Tenerife South (we’ll get there next).

  • Dublin Airport has an above-average punctuality score (4th overall) – 77.78% of flights in 2025 departed on time.
  • Of the over 38,000 Google reviews, Dublin Airport scores well with 4 stars.
  • The cost to get from the airport to the city centre is as low as €2.60, the standard bus fare, so Dublin Airport scores in the top 3.
  • Final score of 16.74.
16.74
3
Tenerife South Airport

Tenerife South Airport (TFS) – World’s Best Small Airport 2026

Tenerife is by far the smallest airport in our top 3. In 2025, 14 million passengers transited through the airport. Given its overall ranking, it’s likely that the majority of those passengers were happy with the experience:

  • Tenerife Sur’s on-time departure rate in 2025 was 75%, better than most of the other airports.
  • Like the other airports in the top 3, Tenerife South scores 4 out of 5 on Google reviews.
  • Unfortunately, as a small airport, TFS can’t compete on shopping, so it scores below average. The transfer cost is also high – the bus ride from the airport to the city centre costs €9.35.
  • Tenerife South Airport showed the biggest ranking improvement from 2023 to 2026. It moved up 7 places.
  • Final score of 14.81.

Airport shopping is a fun pastime for some people and a means to an end for others. If you like shopping (or dining), this category will definitely be of interest. And even if you don’t, it’s a good indicator of the service you’ll get if you need to pick up something you forgot to pack.

London Heathrow offers over 60 shopping options, including Louis Vuitton, WH Smith, and Tiffany, plus more than 30 dining options. The duty-free shopping at Rome Fiumicino’s Terminal 3 is highly rated, with everything from Fendi and Prada to pharmacies and souvenir shops, and dining highlights like Eataly and Farinella. At Frankfurt Airport, terminals 1 and 3 offer a fabulous selection of German and international shops and restaurants, from Hermès and Burberry to Burger King and Victoria’s Secret.
