When you fly Qatar Airways from the United States or from Doha, you are protected by the passenger rights laws of both countries. Find out what you’re entitled to if you have a flight disruption, what steps you should take, and when you’re owed compensation or a refund.
Your Rights if You’re Departing the United States
For Qatar Airways flights departing the US, your rights are protected by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). So, if your flight is delayed, canceled, or if you miss a connection, here’s what you can expect:
Qatar Flight Delays
If your flight is delayed for 6 hours or more, you’re entitled to a new flight to your destination OR a full ticket refund if you decide not to accept a rebooking.
Cancelled Flights
If Qatar Airways cancels your flight, you’re also entitled to a rebooking to your destination OR a full refund, no matter what kind of ticket you hold or when your flight was canceled.
Missed Connections
If you miss your connecting flight with Qatar Airways because of a previous cancellation or delay, you should be given a replacement flight to your destination at no additional cost. But you might be required to pay for your new flight if you missed the connection because you went to the wrong gate or spent too much time in the terminal.
Care and Assistance
The US DOT rules don’t require airlines to provide meals and lodging if you get stuck at the airport because of a delay or cancellation. Instead, it’s up to the airline to provide assistance. So, if you do get stuck because of a flight disruption, try asking Qatar Airways agents for meal or hotel vouchers. There’s always a chance they’ll step up and help you.

Qatar Airways Flights Departing Doha: What You’re Entitled To
If you have a problem with your flight departing Qatar’s base in Doha, your rights are protected by the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA). This is what you can expect if you have a delay, cancellation, or if you miss your connecting flight, according to the airline’s Contract of Carriage:
Flight Delays
If you’re departing Doha and your flight is delayed because of something that should have been avoided like staffing problems or other controllable issues, then Qatar will provide assistance at the airport while you wait.
This means you’re entitled to the following after you have been delayed at least 2 hours for short-haul flights and 4 hours for long-haul flights:
- Meals
- Hotel lodging for overnight delays including transport
- Internet access or phone calls
If your delay lasts 5 hours or more, then you are legally entitled to a refund or a rebooking at no extra cost to you.
Cash Compensation for Delayed Flights
If Qatar Airways is responsible for the delay, you’re also entitled to financial compensation based on how late you arrive at your destination compared to the scheduled arrival time. The airline calculates compensation based on Special Drawing Rights, which is a weighted average of various currencies created by the International Monetary Fund.
- For a 3–6 hour delay, (50 special drawing rights) compensation ≈ $67 USD
- For a delay exceeding 6 hours, (150 special drawing rights) compensation ≈ $200 USD
Canceled Flights
When your flight is canceled by Qatar Airways, you should be given the choice of a new flight to your destination or a full ticket refund. Then, you are also entitled to the same care and assistance as you would get for a delay, including meals, access to communication, and hotel lodging plus transportation if you have to wait overnight for your new flight.
Compensation When a Flight Is Canceled and You’re Informed in Advance
If your flight is canceled, you’re entitled to a refund for the unused portion of your ticket plus extra compensation, depending on how far in advance the airline told you about the cancellation.
Here is how Qatar Airways compensation is calculated:
When You Were Notified | Compensation Amount |
60 to 14 days before departure | A refund plus 50% of the value of the unused part of your ticket |
14 days to 24 hours before departure | A refund plus 75% of the value of the unused part of your ticket. |
Less than 24 hours before departure | You get a refund plus 150% of the value of the unused part of your ticket. |
Why Qatar Airways Flights are Cancelled & Delayed at US Airports
Qatar Airways flies into some of the busiest airports in the United States, including:
- New York JFK,
- Atlanta (ATL),
- Miami (MIA),
- Los Angeles (LAX), and
- San Francisco (SFO)
These hubs handle huge passenger volumes every day, and flights are often tightly packed into limited time slots. So, when something goes wrong, flights can quickly be thrown off schedule. Plus, many of these airports are regularly hit by extreme weather, like hurricanes in Miami, winter storms in New York, and dense fog that can affect the West Coast.
Out of all these gateways, JFK and ATL have a long-standing reputation for being among the most delay-prone airports in the country across all airlines.
What to Do When Qatar Delays or Cancels Your Flight
Step 1: Contact Qatar Airways customer service as soon as possible. You can do this at the airport or online. Also, it’s important to keep your boarding pass, receipts, and any written communication with the airline in case you need it for a claim later.
Step 2: If your flight was canceled, delayed by six or more hours, or your baggage was lost or delayed, request a refund or compensation directly through Qatar Airways’ online claim form.
Step 3: If you don’t get a favorable response from the airline, file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Transportation. The DOT investigates and ensures the airline complies with U.S. passenger rights regulations.
Step 4: For flights departing from Doha, contact the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority if the airline does not resolve your issue.
A more streamlined way to get a refund or reimbursement from the airline is to let a legal-tech company like AirAdvisor handle the entire process for you. We can help you gather the correct documentation and work with Qatar Airways, so that you can get the maximum amount that you’re owed.
How Real Passengers Won Refunds After Qatar Airways Disruptions
Even when traveling with respected international airlines like Qatar Airways, passengers can face cancellations or long delays that throw off their entire itinerary, especially when a U.S. connection is involved.
Under the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT)’s refund and consumer protection rules, if one leg of your trip is canceled or delayed so badly that you miss your onward flight, you may be entitled to a cash refund, not just rebooking or a voucher.
Here’s how AirAdvisor helped real passengers get their money back and defend their rights after Qatar Airways disruptions on U.S.-bound routes.
Case 1: Qatar Airways Cancellation Causes Missed U.S. Connection
A traveler flying from Barcelona (BCN) to Doha (DOH) on Qatar Airways, with a connection onward to New York (JFK), saw their first flight canceled due to a technical issue. The airline cited “operational delays” and offered rebooking for the following day, but didn’t offer a refund or hotel accommodation.
What Happened Next
After the passenger contacted AirAdvisor, our team reviewed the case under the DOT’s automatic refund rule, which requires airlines to issue cash refunds automatically when cancellations prevent travelers from completing their journey. Because the canceled flight made it impossible to reach the US destination on the same booking, the passenger was legally entitled to a full refund for the unused portion of the ticket.
The Outcome
AirAdvisor secured a complete refund in the original form of payment, plus reimbursement for hotel and meal expenses during the overnight delay. The passenger said, “I didn’t even know the DOT rules applied, but AirAdvisor made sure the airline followed them.”
Case 2: Qatar Airways Delay Causes Missed Connection in Doha
Another passenger flying from Barcelona to New York via Doha on Qatar Airways experienced a lengthy delay on the first leg from Barcelona, departing several hours late due to operational and technical issues. As a result, they missed their connecting flight to the United States and were rebooked more than 24 hours later.
What Happened Next
The passenger reached out to AirAdvisor after being told by Qatar Airways that they were “not eligible for a refund” since the flight eventually departed. Our legal team referenced DOT refund guidance, which clarifies that passengers are entitled to a cash refund if a delay or missed connection makes the original itinerary impossible to complete as planned, even if the first flight was operated.
The Outcome
AirAdvisor successfully obtained a full refund for the unused onward segment, and the passenger was reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses caused by the overnight stay in Doha.
