In January, the U.S. Department of Transportation fined Frontier Airlines $650,000 for 3 flights that were delayed 63 times between August 2002 and April 2023. Even so, this won’t keep flight disruptions from happening to Frontier passengers in the future.
So, what do you do when your Frontier flight is cancelled or delayed? Keep reading to find out what you should do and what the airline is required to do to assist you when your travel plans are disrupted.
Frontier Flight Delays
Short flight delays are frustrating, but long ones can really upset your travel schedule. So, if you have a domestic Frontier flight that is delayed for 3 hours or more or an international one delayed by over 6 hours, the airline will email you a link with the following options.
- An alternate flight offered by Frontier at no extra charge
- An alternate flight that you choose without extra fees or
- A refund if you decide not to travel because of the significant delay
Frontier will probably offer you travel credits or vouchers to use at a later date, but you do not have to accept these if you want a cash refund instead. In fact the U.S. Department of Transportation requires all airlines to provide a cash refund for significant delays.

Canceled Flights with Frontier
If Frontier cancels your flight, then you are also entitled to a cash refund that will be returned to your original form of payment within 7 days for credit card purchases and 20 for other forms of payment.
They will also give you the option of rebooking your flight at no extra charge if you prefer. Again, if you decide not to travel, you will be offered a “credit shell” that is valid for 5 years from the date of your originally scheduled flight, but you don’t have to accept this if you prefer a cash refund.
Overbooked Flights: If You’re Bumped
If you have a valid ticket, show up for your flight on time, and are prevented from boarding because your Frontier flight has been oversold, then you will be put on a replacement flight.
Additionally, you could get as much as $1,550 in compensation from Frontier If you’ve been bumped.

Frontier Missed Connections
Itineraries with multiple connections can be easily disrupted if any of the flights are delayed or cancelled. If this happens and you miss your connecting flight as a result, then Frontier will put you on the next available flight to your destination.
Airline Compensation in 2025?
Currently the U.S. DOT is collecting public comment on a rulemaking that would, if enacted, require airlines to compensate passengers for delays and cancellations. The new rules would be similar to European and Canadian regulations that provide cash compensation based on the duration of the delay and the distance of the flight.
Once the Department collects comments in February 2025, the rules will be reviewed and compensation amounts would be determined. Hopefully, the new administration will allow these requirements to become law, but until then, we’ll just have to wait and see.
