Insulting Compensation for Horrific Experience

American Airlines left our family stranded overnight in Miami with two small children! We were traveling to Buenos Aires with our two young children and intentionally booked an overnight flight so the kids could sleep on the connecting 9-hour flight from Miami and Buenos Aires. Our first flight from Pittsburgh was delayed due to weather, which I obviously understand was outside American Airlines' control. That delay caused us to miss our connection to a different AA flight in Miami by only a couple of minutes. The plane was still there, but the gate was closed and employees at the airport refused to even acknowledge us. Unfortunately, American's handling of the missed connection was the part that was completely unacceptable. We waited in an enormous line late at night at the American Airlines counter in Miami and were eventually told that the earliest flight they could put us on was the following morning. We were traveling with two small children, but American provided essentially no useful assistance in finding a hotel. By the time we were trying to find one, all of the hotels were completely booked. So our family spent the night in the airport. Our children got essentially no sleep. We were exhausted, and the airport was an awful environment for two small children to spend an entire night. This was particularly frustrating because we had deliberately booked an overnight flight so that our kids could sleep through the trip to Buenos Aires. The next day, we finally boarded our flight. This flight happened to be during the World Cup final. A flight to Buenos Aires coincided with the World Cup final that Argentina was playing in. The atmosphere on the plane was completely chaotic. Passengers were screaming in the aisles and pushing into our seats, and flight attendants did absolutely nothing to try to get people to calm down. Our children were absolutely miserable after spending the previous night awake in the airport, and the entire flight was an incredibly stressful experience. After the trip, I contacted American Airlines to explain what had happened. Their resolution? $200 in travel vouchers and 10,000 bonus miles. This resolution is worthless to me because, after this experience, I will not be flying American Airlines again. And $200 in travel credit for three passengers after being stranded overnight in an airport with two small children feels almost insulting. I understand that American cannot control the weather. What they can control, however, is how they take care of their passengers when disruptions occur. Rebooking a family with two small children for the following day without providing a reasonable solution for the overnight, leaving us to spend the night in the airport is hardly a reasonable response. We weren't expecting American to magically fix the weather. We expected them to help us navigate the consequences. They didn't.

Do not volunteer your seat if they overbook the flight

I volunteered my seat because American Airlines had overbooked the flight and requested volunteers. I was assured different flights to my final destination. The only way to reroute me, according to airport attendant at the gate was departing from a different airport 70 miles away, therefore, I had to use ground transportation to get there, BUT the attendant providing my new ticket information assured me I would get reimburse for the ground transportation. All I had to do was file a claim and provide my ground transportation receipt. JOSUE MAZZA from AA customer relations has informed me that because, "I volunteered" the seat they won't reimburse me because they don't cover ground transportation. I would have NEVER given up my seat if I would have known. When you volunteer your seat because the airline overbooked, you do not know if you'll need ground transportation or how much that will cost. American Airline does not reimburse ground transportation: DO NOT give up that seat, if they overbook it's their fault, don't let it cost you money. I have submitted a complaint through Department of Transportation, and I am waiting for their reply. I will write my congressman, if need be, but I refused to be scammed by American Airlines. Is this about a scam or an incompetent employee?

dismissive and, frankly, discourteous service was just terrible

We travelled from London Heathrow (LHR) to Boston Logan International Airport, with a connecting flight to Indiana. Unfortunately, our onward flight was cancelled due to adverse weather. I completely understand that passenger safety must always come first, and I appreciate that weather-related cancellations are beyond the airline's control. Following the cancellation, we were rebooked on a 20:50 flight to Charlotte, with a connecting flight to Indiana at 7:00 the following morning. As we were travelling with our family, including children, I made the decision to book accommodation near Charlotte so that we would have somewhere suitable to rest overnight. Unfortunately, this flight was also cancelled due to the weather. Again, I appreciate that the weather itself was outside the airline's control. However, what was particularly disappointing was the complete lack of assistance or care shown to passengers. Having departed Heathrow and arrived in Boston at approximately 12:30, we were left for hours without any offer of food, drinks, or other support. We were eventually rebooked onto the 7:00 a.m. flight on 30 July, meaning we were forced to remain in Boston for two nights. When we enquired about accommodation, the member of staff at the check-in desk was dismissive and, frankly, discourteous. We were simply told that because the disruption was weather-related, the airline would not provide accommodation or any other assistance. This left us wondering what the airline realistically expected families to do—remain in the airport for two days without proper facilities, food, or somewhere suitable to rest. To make matters worse, on the day we were finally due to travel to Indiana, our flight was delayed by a further two hours because there were insufficient cabin crew available and the airline had to wait for a flight attendant arriving from another service. Once boarding had been completed, we were informed that the overhead baggage compartment above seats 10 and 11 would not close correctly. The captain advised that this was a safety issue, resulting in yet another delay while the problem was addressed. Unlike the weather-related disruption, these final delays were entirely within the airline's control. By the time we finally reached our destination, we had effectively lost almost two full days of our family holiday. While I recognise that airlines cannot control the weather, they can control how they treat their customers. Throughout this experience, we felt that there was a complete lack of empathy, and customer care. The attitude displayed by some members of staff only added to an already stressful situation and significantly detracted from what should have been a memorable family holiday. As a result of these disruptions, we incurred accommodation, food, transport, and other incidental expenses that we would not otherwise have had to pay. I ask that you review the level of customer service provided during this incident so that other families are not left in a similar situation in the future. I look forward to your response and to a fair resolution of this matter.

I am so disgusted with American Air...

I am so disgusted with American Airlines. Every contact with AA customer service was LONG WAIT (one rep and two empty seats with 20+ people in line). However, they had three AA staff at the bag check kiosk they were too busy talking with each other while I struggled to get their help. After the entire plane boarded ontime, they announced mechanical problems and the plane was deboarded. The departure gate was changed twice, while the 2:20 flight slipped to 3:20, then 4:00, then 5:00, then 6:00, then at 6:45 we finally boarded and sat on the tarmac to 7:30. I missed my connecting flight and rescheduled it only to miss that flight too. Next they booked me in coach on a flight on the next day as they could not honor my first class ticket. Around four hour mark of this debacle I booked a first class ticket on United and will not take that AA connecting flight and will never fly AA again.

Having to use a kiosk to print bag ...

Having to use a kiosk to print bag tags is bad enough. We went on a cruise out of Seattle. And upon return had to debark the ship before 9:15 am. Our flight wasn’t until 3:47 pm. We got to the american terminal several hours before our flight. And werent allowed to print our baggage tags for over 2 1/2 hours. Had to sit in a corner. No seats to be found. And of course we were so happy to be able to pay the baggage fees. Service is a thing of the past.

As reliable as a delay, and nothing else

American Airlines has achieved something most companies only dream of: perfect consistency. Every single flight I've booked has been delayed. Not most, every one - from Asia, Middle East, or domestic US. At this point I don't check the departure board, I check whether the sun still rises in the east, because both are equally certain and only one is on time. I paid extra for the "premium" route, assuming premium meant something, like leaving when the ticket says. Turns out it's just a surcharge for being delayed in a nicer font. In this life only three things are guaranteed: death, taxes, and my American flight sitting on the tarmac while someone apologizes into a microphone. A special mention for Paul at MSP Terminal 1, who met my calm concerns with a level of sass that deserves its own frequent flyer program. Customer service is supposed to de-escalate, Paul. You escalated. With flair. Pro tip for fellow travelers: book the earliest flight of the day. The delays compound as the hours pass, so a 6 a.m. departure is your best shot at leaving before the dominoes start falling. Bring snacks, download something long to watch, and set your personal expectations to "arrival eventually." Manage your hopes and you'll almost enjoy it. Two stars for the sheer reliability of the unreliability — minus the rest for Paul, the delays, and the audacity of the word "premium." I'll fly them again, of course. Not by choice. I've just lost all faith that any other outcome exists.

UnAmerican Airlines Should Be Ashmed of Itself

To be clear this is a ZERO star review. Facing risky open heart surgery my wife booked a flight on UnAmerican Airlines to visit her family in Texas "just in case". Subsequently my wife was deemed "medically unable to fly" by four cardiologists/cardiac surgeons/cardiac thoratic surgeons and applied for a refund from UnAmerican Airlines. UnAmerican Airlines refused the refund. As an Army Aviation veteran I'm not afraid to climb corporate ladders. I sent a five page appeal, along with documentation from FOUR cardiologists/cardiac surgeons/cardiac thoratic surgeons to FIVE of UnAmerican Airlines top executives: Robert Isom, Chief Executive Officer Steve Johnson, Vice Chair and Chief Strategy Officer Cole Brown, Chief People Officer Ron DeFeo, Executive Vice President, Communications and Marketing David Seymour, Chief Operating Officer This refund request was also denied by an obviously incompetent, low level "Customer Relations" representative Tiana Brown that we suspect was being discriminatory. I followed up by sending a THIRD 14 page refund request with medical documentation and documentation of Tiana Brown's incompetence and seeming discriminatory practices to the same FIVE top UnAmerican Airlines executives. Finally, a refund was approved. It is despicable how a veteran and a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother was treated by UnAmerican Airlines. It is no surprise that UnAmerican Airlines has a well-earned TWO STAR rating. We urge all veterans to NEVER fly with UnAmerican Airlines.
