What Overbooking Means for SunExpress Passengers
You’re at the boarding gate, ready to start your holiday when you learn that the flight is overbooked. Most airlines legally overbook flights as a way to increase profits. Their reasoning is that because there is always a percentage of travellers who do not make a certain flight, it is in their best interest to oversell tickets. This helps them keep all flights booked to capacity.
Even though SunExpress employs sophisticated software to determine how much to overbook flights, there are times when things don’t go to plan, and too many passengers show up for the flight. When there aren’t enough seats for everyone, the airline will have to find a way to get some passengers to take a different flight, either voluntarily or involuntarily.
SunExpress Will Call for Volunteers
If a flight is overbooked, SunExpress will try to get some passengers to surrender their seats in exchange for a compensation package. Depending on the situation and how quickly they need to free up seats, SunExpress will begin by offering:
A new flight to your destination
Vouchers for meals and lodging as well as related transport, if needed
Cash, travel vouchers, and other perks like lounge access or seat upgrades.
Sometimes, passengers can negotiate with the airline for an award package that suits them, but at the very least, you will be offered a replacement flight and care and assistance while you wait for it to depart. If the airline cannot find enough willing volunteers, they will begin selecting passengers to deny boarding.
Involuntary Denied Boarding
Passenger selection for involuntary denied boarding is usually based on your check-in time. The later you check-in, the more likely you are to be denied boarding an oversold flight. You’re also more at risk if you:
Do not have frequent flyer or loyalty status
Check-in and arrive at the gate late
Are an economy class passenger with the least expensive seat.
Don’t have a seat assignment
If SunExpress chooses to keep you from boarding, you are entitled to:
Up to £520 (€600) in cash compensation, which you should receive immediately
Meals and refreshments while you wait for your new flight to depart, and
Hotel lodging and transport if you have to wait until the next day.
Note: If you were involuntarily downgraded to a lower seating class on your rebooked flight, you will be reimbursed a percentage of your fare, but if you are upgraded, you don’t have to pay the difference.
Denied Boarding with SunExpress? Take these Steps
Find out why it happened. SunExpress should give you a statement, outlining why you were refused boarding and the approximate compensation total. Keep this document because if you don’t receive your payout, you’ll need to file a claim.
Choose a new flight or a refund. Ask about a new flight to your destination. You do have the option to request a refund as well.
Ask for meals and lodging. If you choose to be rebooked and you have a while to wait at the airport, ask for meal or hotel vouchers, especially for overnight delays.
Avoid vouchers. SunExpress might try to get you to accept travel vouchers in place of cash, but by law, you’re entitled to cash.
How Much Compensation Does SunExpress Owe Me?
As a Turkish Airline, SunExpress must comply with UK261 and EU261 regulations when they depart from EU and UK airports. Flights departing from Turkey are protected by the air passenger rights regulations in that country, which are similar to the rules in the EU and UK.
So, if you’ve been involuntarily denied boarding an overbooked SunExpress flight, you will be entitled to the following amounts, based on the distance of your flight. You should receive these amounts immediately without having to specifically request it.
Flight Distance
Compensation Payout
Flights under 1,500 km
£220 (€250)
Flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km
£350 (€400)
Flights over 3,500 km
£520 (€600)
