ANA Lost or Damaged Baggage? Here’s How to Take Action and Get Compensated

Having a problem with checked baggage can be so frustrating, but you do have rights as a passenger when you fly with All Nippon Airways (ANA). So, whether your bags were badly damaged or delayed or even lost, you can get as much as roughly $2,080 from the airline if you take all the necessary steps.

Here’s exactly what you’ll need to do if ANA mishandles your luggage.

Step #1: Make a Baggage Irregularity Report: The Most Important Step

Seriously. This is the most important step, because if you don’t file a report about your missing or damaged baggage, there’s a good chance your claim will be rejected. For any kind of luggage problem, you will be filling out a form known as a Property Irregularity Report or a PIR.

This document is very important, so keep a copy and especially the report number because you’ll need it to make a compensation claim and to track the status of your bags.

Delayed & Lost Bags

You have 21 days to submit a report, and you can do this on the ANA website OR at the airport at the baggage services desk. If and when they are found, they’ll be sent to the address you listed in the PIR.

Damaged Bags

You have 7 days to make a report. We also recommend that you do this at the airport where an agent will inspect the damage and take photos. It’s a good idea to also take your own photos to have as supporting evidence if you file a claim for reimbursement.

If TSA Damages Your Bags

If the TSA damages your luggage you’ll know because you’ll see a notice inside your suitcase or a seal attached to the outside of your bags. ANAt is not responsible for damage caused by the TSA.

Contact the TSA for more info by calling 866-289-9673.

Step #2: Purchase Clothing & Toiletries

You need stuff to wear and for personal hygiene while your bags are missing, right? And if your bags were damaged, you might need to replace a few things. Go ahead and buy what you need, but make sure you keep your receipts organized! You will have to show proof of purchase in your reimbursement claim

Also, keep in mind that ANA will try to pay you as little as possible for these expenses, so you might want to make a note of what these things were replacing and why you needed them.

Step #3: Understand Your Entitlements for Baggage Mishandling

Reading an international treaty probably sounds as dry as popcorn, but being able to reference your rights as a passenger will be very valuable when you submit your claim. Most airlines assume that passengers aren’t aware of what they’re entitled to, so you can surprise them by citing laws like the Montreal Convention.

This is the treaty that protects your rights for baggage mishandling on international flights, and it stipulates that ANA must pay you up to roughly $2,080 if they delayed, lost, or damaged your bags. However, they will not give you the full amount unless you prove that this is what your baggage, expenses, and time cost you.

Step #4: Submit Your Baggage Compensation Claim to ANA

If you’ve taken all the previous steps, this one should be the easiest. You have 21 days- 2 years to submit a claim for baggage loss and damage, and 7 days of your flight make a claim for damage.

All you have to do is collect all your supporting travel documents, including your:

  • Bag tag that you were given at the ANA check-in counter
  • Boarding pass and other proof that you took your flight
  • Photos of the damage (as applies)
  • The PIR you completed
  • Any additional communication with the airline or documents to support your case

If you booked your flight through ANA, but your baggage was lost on a codeshare flight, you will need to submit your claim to the operating airline.

Step #5: Wait for ANA to Send your Payment

Once you submit your claim, you'll have to wait several weeks to a few months to receive your compensation payment. If you submitted all the correct information, it will take ANA less time to process it, but the time they take also depends on the complexity of your situation.

Bottom Line

ANA is highly regarded for its superior service and standards. In fact, if you search for lost or damaged baggage problems on sites like TripAdvisor, there are very few unfavorable reviews. Still, as long as you take the right steps quickly (or at least within the right time frames), you can expect the airline to pay you what you’re owed for expenses and the inconvenience.
