The USAβs best & worst airlines for 180+ minute delays: Choose your carrier wisely in 2026
Learn which US airlines disrupt passengers the most with 3-hour+ delays. Using AirAdvisor AirData, we rank 9 US airlines by delay frequency and wait time.
TL;DR
- The overall worst US airline for significant delays is Frontier.
- The best US airline for 3-hour+ delays is Southwest.
- The majority of 180-minute+ delays on US airlines occur during the morning and daytime. Evening and night flights experience fewer significant delays.
- Rankings use the LD180+ rate, the rate at which the airline’s flights are delayed on arrival by 180 minutes or more compared to the total annual flight operations. We also use the average delay time once a flight is delayed by the 3-hour threshold.
- The AirAdvisor AirData is from 2025: January 1 to December 31.
When a flight gets delayed by at least 3 hours, the consequences can be huge. Of course, your travel is disrupted with the potential for missed flight connections and canceled plans. But the impact can quickly stretch even further to missed work, missed meetings, and missed important events.
Unfortunately, you can’t stop the planes from being delayed in the first place. What you can do is avoid problematic airlines when booking and better prepare for the possibility of delays. Using our annual AirData, we’ve compiled a list of 2026’s best and worst US airlines for 180-minute+ flight delays.
Methodology
Using AirAdvisor’s AirData from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2025, we examined the 9 busiest airlines in the USA. We looked at the frequency and severity of encountering significant delays. Our metrics are as follows:
- LD180+ = An arrival delay of 180 minutes or more.
- LD180+ rate = The rate at which flights are delayed by 3 hours or more as a percentage of the airline’s total annual route operations.
- Average long delay time = Of the flights that were delayed at least 3 hours, we averaged the actual total wait airport time.
In all cases, the higher the value, the worse it is for the passenger – higher delay chances and longer wait times.
We assigned more importance to routes being delayed in the first place (70% of the total score) than to the average delay time (30%). Both categories were ranked from 1 (worst/highest) to 9 (best/lowest), and the weights were applied to the points.
Key findings
- The overall worst US airline for 3-hour+ delays is Frontier (1.69% LD180+; 316.11 average delay in minutes).
- The overall best US airline is Southwest (0.44% LD180+; 264.17 minutes).
- The US airline with the longest average delay time is American Airlines – 363.24 (over 6 hours).
- US airlines struggle the most with long delays at Chicago O’Hare Airport (ORD) and New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA).
- The highest number of significant delays with each airline happens in the morning (37.5%) and daytime (37%). Three-hour+ delays are less common in the evening (22%) and at night (3.5%).

The 3 worst US airlines for significant delays

Frontier Airlines – worst overall
As a discount carrier, passengers don’t expect extra comfort and space with Frontier Airlines. Unfortunately, they also can’t expect a low frequency of severe delays.
- Frontier has the highest LD180+ rate of any US airline, 1.69%.
- With an average long delay time of over 5 hours, Frontier isn’t as bad as American, but the significant delays are still very long.
- The Frontier route with the highest likelihood of long delays is from Tijuana (TIJ) to Cancun (CUN). It was delayed by at least 3 hours 9.1% of the time, well above the airline’s overall LD180+ rate.
- Literally any airline you choose will decrease your chances of being stranded at the airport for 3 hours or more. Book with a comparable alternative like JetBlue instead.

Allegiant Air
The second-worst US airline for significant delays is another discount carrier, Allegiant Air. They operate fewer than half the flights of Frontier, but still have trouble keeping things running on time.
- Allegiant has the second-longest delay time of 360.11 minutes (6 hours), although the LD180+ rate (1.31%) is better than that of Frontier.
- The worst route with Allegiant is between Orlando Sanford (SFB) and Des Moines (DSM); it experiences a delay of 3 hours or more 8.6% of the time.
- Allegiant is the only US airline where significant delays are the most common in the evening. So, unlike the other airlines on our list, you’re better off booking morning or daytime flights.

American Airlines
American Airlines is our lowest-scoring major airline for 180-minute+ delays. That’s not good news, as it's also one of the highest-volume carriers in the USA.
- When an American Airlines flight gets delayed, it’s really delayed. The carrier has the longest average long delay time of 363.24 minutes. That’s slightly higher than Allegiant, and also over 6 hours.
- American fares much better than Frontier and Allegiant in the delay frequency category. Flights are delayed by 3 hours or more with American on 0.9% of flights.
- Up to 8% of AA flights from Traverse City (TVC) to Chicago O’Hare (ORD) are delayed by 3+ hours, which is 9 times the airline’s overall LD180+ rate.
- If you’re booking with a major US airline, Delta and United are much better options to increase your chances of avoiding severe delays.
The best US airline for avoiding significant delays: Southwest

Southwest
The bottom line: if the route you need is offered by Southwest Airlines, book it. Here’s why:
- Southwest has the lowest LD180+ rate at 0.44%. Instead of more than 1 out of every 100 flights being delayed by 3+ hours, with Southwest, it’s closer to 1 out of 250.
- Southwest also has the lowest average LD180+ delay time – 264.17 minutes.
- Aside from significant delays being rare, when they happen with Southwest, they’re delayed less than 4.5 hours, more than half an hour less than the US airline average.
How to use AirAdvisor’s airline rankings when booking a flight
The 2025 data gives us a baseline of airline significant delays for 2026 and beyond. And luckily, when we average it out, these 9 airlines delay flights by 3 hours+ in less than 1% of operations. And now for the not-so-lucky part, on average, when a flight is delayed by 3 hours, it actually turns into a delay of 309.43 minutes, which is a little over 5 hours.
So, to avoid these issues, here’s what you can do when booking your next US airline flight:
- Look for alternative airports. For example, we know that the most common route delays on US airlines happen at LaGuardia and O’Hare. Opt for flights involving JFK, Newark, or Midway instead.
- Choose your travel time wisely. If possible, avoid routing through the busiest major-airport corridors during high-traffic travel windows, like New York and DC. Flying through smaller or less congested airports can sometimes reduce your chances of disruption.
- Avoid connections. Try to book trips without connections, and if they can’t be prevented, fewer is always better.
- Build in a buffer. Give yourself generous connection windows whenever possible. Delays can happen at multiple stages of the journey, including taxiing, getting off the aircraft, security/passport control, and boarding changes.

FAQs
Do budget airlines have more long delays?
Not always. Our 3 worst US airlines for delays include 2 low-cost carriers (Frontier and Allegiant) and 1 major airline (American). Delays are often longer with budget airlines because they have fewer backup aircraft available. When one delay occurs, it can create a chain reaction across later flights.
Does the weather affect all airlines equally when it comes to significant delays?
No. Airlines with major hubs in storm-prone regions can experience more weather-related delays. For example, airlines heavily reliant on Florida, Texas, Chicago, or Northeast hubs may see more disruption during hurricane season, winter storms, or summer thunderstorms.
How often is the AirAdvisor’s AirData updated?
Daily. That’s how we confirm we have the most current data available at any time.
Press highlights
