An annoying flight delay or cancellation can wreak havoc on your travel plans and result in missed connections and missed experiences. While you can’t magically make the plane on time again, you get some Cyprus Airways compensation in certain circumstances to help with the inconvenience.

As airline compensation experts since 2017, we have the dirt on filing Cyprus Airways compensation claims and getting the maximum amount every time. Let’s explore how exactly to claim compensation, the payout rules, some tips for a streamlined experience, and the Cyprus Airways cancellation policy in case it’s you who needs to adjust your flight.

Key Takeaways

  • Regulation UK261 and EU261 apply to Cyprus Airways flights that depart or land in either the UK or the EU.
  • Compensation amounts will fall between £220 and £520, depending on your flight’s delay length and distance.
  • To be eligible for Cyprus Airways compensation, your flight must be delayed upon arrival by 3 hours or more or cancelled with fewer than 2 weeks (14 days) notice.
  • Only an at-fault disruption is eligible for the airline compensation.
  • The right to care means that passengers can get meals, drinks, and even hotel stays for overnight interruptions, as well as cash payouts.
  • In a one-month period, we found that popular flights between Athens and Larnaca were delayed about one-third of the time.
  • The Economy Flex and Business Flex fares permit a Cyprus Airways refund; some conditions apply.
  • Don’t accept inflexible vouchers when you can get real cash that can be used for anything.
  • If you need any help fighting for your air passenger rights in the UK or the EU, partner with AirAdvisor. Start a claim in minutes and let our experts get to work. Be among the 98% of cases we win!

Filing Your Cyprus Airways Compensation Claim Without Extra Help

Cyprus Airways asks that you email feedback@cyprusairways.com to start your claim. There is no official online claim form to use. Here’s exactly what to do:

  1. Know your rights. It’s hard to ask for what you deserve if you don’t know what it is! Consult our free compensation calculator for a definitive answer.
  2. Craft a brief and specific email about the situation. Mention your details, any pertinent Cyprus Airways information you received (like the cause of the delay), and exactly how much compensation you expect.
  3. Attach any receipts for delay-related expenses and anything else that will strengthen your Cyprus Airways compensation claim.
  4. Don’t let your claim fall through the cracks – follow up often to let them know you’re not going to forget about what you’re owed.
  5. For escalations, get in touch with either the UK or the Cyprus Civil Aviation Authority. They can assist in arriving at a resolution.
  6. In cases where you’ve exhausted all the other options or simply don’t have the time and energy to fight with airlines, we can step in. File a claim in 3 minutes and leave it in our experienced hands.

Cyprus Airways Flight Delay Compensation – The UK & EU Rules

In truth, we can basically use the UK and EU regulations interchangeably – UK261 was enacted after Brexit to replace the rights afforded to EU member states (like Cyprus) through EU261, also known as Regulation (EC) No 261/2004.

As an EU-based airline, all Cyprus Airways flights are eligible for flight delay compensation provided they leave or arrive at an EU airport. Additionally, the cause of the delay must be preventable by the airline, and not something like bad weather.

A further caveat requires a flight to be delayed by 3 hours or more to qualify for Cyprus Airways compensation. This is based on the arrival time at the final destination, not the departure time. Here are the cash amounts based on flight routes and delay times:

  • Under 1,500km (like Larnaca to Athens) with a 3+ hour delay: £220
  • Between 1,500km and 3,500km (like London to Larnaca) with a 3+ hour delay: £340
  • Over 3,500km (like Dubai to London) with a 3-4 hour delay: £260
  • Over 3,500km (like Dubai to London) with a 4+ hour delay: £520

Other Cyprus Airways Compensation – Right to Care

While receiving cash is a great help, it usually lands in your account well after the trip is over. In transit, Cyprus Airways is also required to offer care and assistance to its delayed passengers. This right kicks in as early as a 2-hour delay for shorter flights and includes:

  • Meals
  • Drinks
  • Access to communication to rearrange plans

At times when the resulting delay stretches overnight, the airline is also responsible for paying for your hotel. It’s also expected that they pay (or arrange free of charge) transportation between the hotel and the airport and back.

How Often Do Cyprus Airways Flights Get Delayed?

Using 31 days of data from FlightAware between March 16 and April 15, 2025, we found that some flights are more delayed than others.

For example, flight CY120 from Larnaca to Beirut had an on-time rate of 95% during the period. Only one flight was delayed at all, and by only 22 minutes.

Alternatively, 2 routes from Athens to Larnaca (CY311 and CY313) had a much higher instance of delays, 38.7% and 33%, respectively, which is about one-third of all flights. The average delay time was slightly longer at 28 minutes.

So, the good news is, most Cyprus Airways flights arrive on time, and those that don’t aren’t typically delayed by significant periods (although it does happen!).

How to Deal With a Cyprus Airways Flight Cancellation

A flight cancelled by the airline can have a more significant impact on your travel than a delay, so there are extra things to do:

  1. Grab an alternate flight as soon as you can. Everyone on the same original flight will want to re-book, so acting fast is essential, or you could be waiting days to continue the trip.
  2. Sometimes there’s no saving the journey, so if no alternative flight suits your plans, request a Cyprus Airways refund instead.
  3. When the cancelled flight is replaced by a suitable alternative and you’re delayed at the airport waiting for it, always ask for the care you deserve, which includes the same refreshments and hotel accommodations/transport.
  4. Get the Cyprus Airways flight cancellation reason from the ground staff. This partially determines your ability to claim Cyprus Airways compensation.
  5. Keep all your information and documents. The airline may need additional info to validate your claim, so the best rule of thumb for Cyprus Airways cancellation claims is not to throw anything away until the claim is resolved.

Cyprus Airways Cancellation Compensation Guidelines

Similar to delays, Cyprus Airways doesn’t just hand out flight cancellation compensation every time a flight is cancelled. Provided you received fewer than 14 days' (2 weeks) notice of the interruptions, claiming up to £520 could be possible.

But, if you accept a replacement flight that leaves within an hour of the original one and gets to the destination within 2 hours of the original arrival time, compensation isn’t possible. In reality, though, Cyprus Airways doesn’t have that many daily flights, so chances are good that you’ll be waiting a while.

How To Get a Full Refund Via the Cyprus Airways Cancellation Policy

Things are different when it’s you who needs to cancel your flight. The Cyprus Airways refund policy is clear in that your ability to get a refund depends solely on the fare type you purchased:

  • Economy Classic – non-refundable
  • Economy Flex – refundable, cancellation fee of €40 (£35)
  • Business Flex – fully refundable
tip

Note that for changes or cancellations within 1 hour of takeoff, a no-show fee could apply.

Cyprus Airways Missed Connections & Denied Boarding

In addition to claims for delayed or cancelled flights, UK261 and EU261 also cover denied boarding (when an airline overbooks the flight and there aren’t enough seats for everyone) and missed connections. A Cyprus Airways missed connection occurs when a delay or cancellation earlier in the journey prevents you from making it to the connecting flight.

In either case, passengers can make a claim for up to £520 for the inconvenience, depending on who was at fault, the flight distance, and the total delay time.

Consult our useful guides for denied boarding and missed connections for all the details.

What Are Extraordinary Circumstances & Why Are They Important?

It would be nice if every time a passenger was disrupted, they received money for the trouble. But, it probably wouldn’t be fair to ask airlines to pay compensation if they have no control over the reason for the delay or cancellation.

That’s what’s considered an extraordinary circumstance. When things like severe weather or Air Traffic Control strikes prevent the on-time operation of a flight, there’s nothing Cyprus Airways can do about it. Therefore, don’t expect any compensation.

But, sometimes Cyprus Airways is responsible for the interruption, and that’s when the UK and EU regulations kick in. This includes things like poor scheduling and Cyprus Airways strikes.

All About Cyprus Airways

Cyprus Airways has a long history in the aviation market, although that came to a halt in 2015, when it ceased operations. In 2016, Charlie Airlines bought the rights to the flag carrier’s brand and continues operations currently.

Now, when you take a flight connecting this island nation to the Middle East and Europe, you know that you have air passenger protection for Cyprus Airways delays and cancellations. Make sure you claim up to the £520 you’re owed!
