In 2023, easyJet carried almost 25 million pieces of passenger hold luggage across its entire European flight network. This translates to more than £2 billion in ancillary revenue, a good portion of which came from the airline’s baggage fees.

Like other low cost carriers, easyJet has unbundled its fees to allow for lower ticket prices. They make up the difference by charging for carry-on and checked baggage with loads of variation depending on the route travelled, how you pay for it, and other factors. So, in this article, we will explain easyJet’s complex baggage policy so you can bring everything you need on your trip without breaking the bank in luggage fees.

Key points

  1. Baggage fees depend on the route, flight, and booking time
  2. Fees for cabin and hold luggage are always cheaper online before check-in
  3. Maximum 3 checked bags per passenger (including children)
  4. The standard weight of each checked bag cannot exceed 23 kg (33 lbs)
  5. Total weight per bag must not exceed 32 kg (50 lbs)
  6. The maximum linear size is 275 cm (108 inches)

easyJet Cabin Bag Allowance

Each passenger is allowed:

  • 1 small cabin bag FREE
  • 1 large (standard) cabin bag for a fee starting at £5.99 (Free for easyJet Plus cardmembers, FLEXI fare, Up Front, or Extra Legroom passengers)
  • Passengers with babies are allowed an additional bag that must fit under the seat.
  • Cabin bags that are too big, haven’t been paid for, or included in your seat selection will be sent to the aircraft hold, and you’ll be charged £48.

Cabin baggage availability is limited, so it’s best to make this selection when you book your flight rather than later. You can also change your choices any time online before you check-in for your flight.

How to Pay for Baggage on easyJet

The best and most cost effective way to purchase baggage allowance is through the app or on the easyJet website during the booking process. If you don’t do it when you book your flight, you can also add or change your baggage preference as well as pay by going to “Manage Bookings”.

You can also add baggage at the airport during check-in, but this will be more expensive as you can see in the table above.

Excess & Additional Baggage

  • Anytime you pre-book baggage, the fees for any extra weight will be charged by item, by kilo, and by flight.
  • If your baggage weighs more than your allowance at the airport then you will be charged £12 for each 3 kg unit up to a maximum weight of 32 kg per piece of luggage.
  • If you bought a 15 kg checked bag then you can add extra weight up to 27 kg.

EasyJet Baggage Allowance for Families

Passengers who will be flying with a baby on their lap are allowed 1 additional bag for baby supplies free of charge. The only condition is that it does not exceed 45 x 36 x 20 cm and can fit under the seat in front of you.

warning

You can check a stroller and 1 other item at the gate for free in addition to your standard baggage allowance. Additional items include:

  • Baby back carriers
  • Booster seat

EasyJet Baggage Policy: How it Compares to Other Low Cost Airlines

Compared to Wizz Air and Ryanair, easyJet has more flexible baggage options, but their fees are higher especially for heavier baggage booked at the airport. In contrast, Wizz Air has slightly lower fees for hold luggage but their fee structure is similar to easyJet’s.

warning

Ryanair, on the other hand, seems to have the most affordable base option for hold luggage, but bags larger than 10kg can be as expensive as Wizz and easyJet.

easyJet Baggage Hacks

  1. To avoid paying extra for large or overweight bags and other bulky items, consider shipping them ahead of your flight as the prices can be much lower.
  2. If you’re travelling with a car seat for your child, fill the extra space in the box with clothing so you won’t be overweight in your regular luggage.
  3. Always prepay for any extra baggage and do so online where it will be less expensive.
  4. Compression bags will allow you to fit more into less space.
  5. If your easyJet luggage is lost, delayed, or damaged, be sure to file a report at the baggage service desk before you leave the airport. Doing this will help you locate your baggage more quickly and help you if you need to file a compensation claim.
  6. Instead of packing heavy clothing, try wearing some of it. This will help reduce baggage fees.
