To help passengers get refunds and extra expenses back from airlines, AirAdvisor has expanded its service by launching the Ticket Refund & Expenses Reimbursement Tool.  By entering a few basic flight details, you can quickly find out if and how much you’re owed for refunds, reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses, and compensation all in one simple flow. No more guessing. No more juggling multiple claims. Just one clean, guided process to help you recover your money.

Passengers Can Claim for Extra Expenses

Every year, millions of travelers lose money because flight disruptions rules are so confusing. Refund rules differ by airline, and reimbursement rights change depending on whether you're flying domestically or internationally.

While some passengers are fully protected under EU or UK laws, others, especially U.S. passengers, don’t know what support they can expect at all.

How to Find Out What the Airline Owes You

To use the tool, just enter your flight details, and tell us what went wrong with your flight. From there, the tool automatically:

  • Checks eligibility for compensation, refunds, and reimbursement
  • Calculates maximum amounts based on your airline and route
  • Shows reimbursement caps
  • Generates all necessary documents
  • Guides users through uploading receipts when required

How Reimbursement Works

Your airline and point of departure determines the rules for airline reimbursement.

U.S. Department of Transportation Rules

In the United States, airlines are not required to reimburse you for meals, hotels or transport during delays or cancellations. The only automatic right is a refund if you choose not to travel after a cancellation or “significant” schedule change.

Anything extra, like meal vouchers, hotel lodging,or  ground transport, is voluntary and depends on the commitments of your airline. Some airlines have committed to providing these under the US DOT’s Cancellation and Delay Dashboard, but it is not federal law. Because of this, you can get reimbursed for any out-of-pocket expenses made during a controllable cancellation or delay.

EU261 & UK261 Reimbursement Rules

If your flight falls under EU261 or UK261, airlines must take care of you during long delays or cancellations. That includes meals, drinks, hotel accommodation and ground transport when needed. If the airline fails to provide these, you can claim back the reasonable expenses, and there is no fixed limit. The only rule is that your costs must be necessary and proportionate to the delay or situation.

The Montreal Convention for International Flights

The Montreal Convention covers international routes and makes airlines responsible for financial losses caused by a delay, but only up to a fixed legal limit.

The maximum liability for delays is 6,303 SDR per passenger, which our tool automatically converts into the airline’s currency.

Here are estimates of the maximum reimbursement payouts for actual documented expenses:

  • €7,700 (EU airlines)
  • £6,600 (UK airlines)
  • $9,100 USD (U.S. airlines)
  • $12,300 CAD (Canadian airlines)
  • $13,700 AUD (Australian airlines)

These amounts can fluctuate based on changes in the exchange rates of the five major currencies that make up the IMF’s SDR basket.

Your Flight Rights All in One Place

You don’t have to try to figure out which regulations apply to your flight. By using the compensation and reimbursement calculator, you can quickly and easily find out:

  • What rights apply to your case
  • How much you can recover from the airline
  • Whether you’re owed a refund
  • Whether your expenses are reimbursable, and
  • Whether you may qualify for compensation

You can access the new Refund & Expenses Reimbursement Tool right from our homepage or through the “Check Compensation” section in the navigation menu. Just enter your flight details, choose what happened, and follow the guided steps to start your claim.
