Delays and cancellations are frustrating, but if you fly Air Greenland when one of these disruptions occurs, you could get protection from the laws in the European Union. Keep reading to learn about compensation and how to get it.
Your Rights as a Air Greenland Passenger
Even though Air Greenland isn’t based in the EU, it must abide by the rules of EU Regulation 261/2004 anytime its flights depart from an airport in that territory.
This means that as a passenger, you will be protected when you experience delayed, cancelled, or overbooked flights. The following table will help you understand your entitlements.
Compensation in EU | ||
Flight Delays | Flight Cancellations | Denied Boarding |
Up to £520 (€600) in monetary compensation Care & Assistance | Up to £520 (€600) in monetary compensation Rebooked flight OR Refund Care & Assistance | Up to £520 (€600) in monetary compensation Rebooked flight OR Refund Care & Assistance |
Air Greenland Flight Delay Compensation
When you have a delayed flight with Air Greenland, you could be eligible for two kinds of compensation: Care & assistance and financial compensation between £220 (€250) to £520 (€600).
Financial compensation will only be possible if your flight is delayed by at least 3 hours at your final destination. The precise amount you receive depends on the flight distance
If the delay causes you to wait at the airport for 2 hours or more, then the Air Greenland must provide you with:
- Written explanation of your passenger rights and
- Free access to communication via phone, FAX, emails and
- Meals, refreshment, hotel accommodation, and
- Transport to and from hotel accommodation
If your flight is delayed by 5 hours or more, then you’re entitled to the compensation listed above PLUS a full ticket refund. If your travel plans are pointless because of the delay, then AIr Greenland will also provide you with a return trip to your starting airport.

Air Greenland Cancelled Flight Compensation
You must be given at least 14 days notice of a flight cancellation to be eligible for compensation. However, even with 14 days notice, you’re still entitled to a rebooking or a refund without additional fees.
If Air Greenland cancels your flight with fewer than 14 days notice, then they must compensate you in cash if they are to blame for the disruption.
Now, if you accept a rebooking and the departure is many hours later, then you should be given meals, refreshments, and even hotel accommodation if your flight doesn’t leave until the next morning. You’re also entitled to transportation to and from the hotel. If you’re not given vouchers for these expenses, be sure to keep your receipts so you can include them in your compensation claim.
You’re also entitled to cash compensation up to £520 (€600) as long as the airline is at fault and could have prevented the disruption.
Compensation for Denied Boarding
Air Greenland will occasionally oversell their flights, ensuring that every aircraft is full. They do this assuming that some passengers won’t show up for their flight. But, when all ticketed passengers check-in on time, there are more people than available seats, so someone will be bumped.
If you don’t accept any offers, and you’re involuntarily denied boarding, then you are owed the following:
- A full ticket refund or
- An alternate flight and
- Care and assistance and
- Up to £520 (€600)
Compensation for Missed Connections
If you’re on an Air Greenland flight departing from an airport in the EU, and you miss your connection, you could also get compensated.
While meals and refreshment will be provided during your wait at the airport, cash recompense will only be available if both flights were on the same Air Greenland booking. If they were and you arrive 3 or more hours late at your destination, then you could get cash.
Air Greenland Compensation Amounts
We mentioned in the sections above that the amount of cash compensation you receive depends on the distance of your flight and how many hours you were delayed at your destination. The following table should help explain this.
Delay Time | Flight Distance
Flights under 1,500km | Flights between 1,500-3,500km | Flights over 3,500km
Over 3 hours | £220 (€250) | £350 (€400) | £520 (€600)* |
*Air Greenland might try to reduce this amount by as much as 50%, but AirAdvisor always works to get the full amount.
When You Won’t Be Compensated
There will be occasions when Air Greenland won’t have to pay you cash compensation. These situations, known as extraordinary circumstances, are times when the airline cancels or delays a flight for reasons entirely beyond their control like civil unrest or severe weather events.
How to File a Air Greenland Claim
To file a compensation claim with the airline, you’ll need to navigate to their official site, locate their email address, and collect all your flight-related documents. Then, you simply draft a letter explaining why you are owed compensation.
It’s very important to include plenty of information including copies of your
- Boarding pass
- Ticket receipts
- Booking confirmation documents
- Receipts for out-of-pocket expenses
After you email your compensation claim, you might have to wait several weeks before you get a decision. If your claim is rejected, you’re not alone. Plenty of passengers have also had this experience, but that’s where we come into the picture!
