Your Passenger Rights as a Eurowings Passenger
Because Eurowings is based in the European Union, let’s take a quick look at EU regulation EC 261/2004 (EU261). These rules govern and protect your air passenger rights for flight disruptions including delays, cancellations, and denied boarding.
What is Eurowings EU261 Compensation?
Regulation EU 261 offers quite a broad level of protection for passengers traveling around Europe. In fact, you can claim EU261 compensation in any of the following situations:
- Flight delay - Claim compensation if your flight was delayed by a period lasting at least three hours.
- Canceled flight - Passengers can also claim compensation under EU 261 2004 in situations where their flights have been canceled by the airline within fewer than 14 days and no alternative service has been provided. You can usually get a flight refund as well.
- Overbooking - Overbooking is when flights get excessively booked, with too many tickets sold to customers. If you’re a victim of this, EU 261 should have you covered.
- Missed connection - EU261 can even cover you in case of a missed connection. So, if your first flight arrives a little late and you miss your next one, you could make a claim.
Understanding the rules of EU261 is important because unfortunately, not every flight delay or cancellation will be protected. Passengers from around the world are covered under these regulations, but here are some points you’ll need to remember.
- Your Eurowings flight must arrive at least 3 hours late at your final destination.
- The amount of compensation you receive is based on the length of the delay and the distance of your flight.
Eurowings Flight Delays and Compensation
Eurowings operates the short-haul flights, while Eurowings Discover operates the medium and long-haul flights.
According to the stats published by Eurocontrol for 2023, Eurowings Group had an overall on-time percentage of 73%. This means that at least 1 in every 4 flights experience a delay.
If your flight delay lasts 3 hours or longer, then you could be owed financial compensation as long as the delay wasn’t caused by something outside the carrier’s control like dangerous weather or an airport strike. Although those 27% of delayed flights won’t all meet the 3-hour threshold, some will. And longer delays occur more often when a flight has been canceled and you’re given a replacement flight.
If your replacement flight arrives at your final destination 3 or more hours later than your originally scheduled arrival time, then you are eligible for delay compensation. In fact, you could get Eurowings flight delay compensation up to €600 as long as you submit your claim within 3 years of your delayed flight.
Eurowings Cancellations - When You Can Get Compensation
Eurowings flight cancellations can be caused by staffing issues, severe weather, ground crew or baggage handler strikes, or partially booked planes that would be cost-prohibitive to the airline.
In October 2022, an ongoing Eurowings pilot strike caused severe disruptions for thousands of passengers. According to Reuters, the company reported that:
About 240 out of 488 flights have been canceled at airports in Cologne, Hamburg, Berlin, and Stuttgart, affecting about 25,000 passengers on the strike's first day.
In a more recent incident, strikes at German airports have also majorly affected passengers. More than 900 flights were canceled on February 1, 2024, which was 32% of daily departures and 22% of daily arrivals. The airports most affected were Frankfurt, Berlin, and Hamburg, as reported by FlightRadar24.
When it comes to flight cancellations, Eurowings will provide you with either an alternate flight or, if you decide not to proceed with your trip, they should offer you a full ticket refund. If you have to wait at the airport for your replacement flight, your air passenger rights in EU 261 state that Eurowings must also provide you with care and assistance compensation. This usually comes in the form of vouchers for restaurants and even hotel accommodation if your replacement flight doesn’t leave until the following day.
In addition to these options, you may also be eligible for monetary compensation from Eurowings for your flight cancellation. Depending on the travel distance and the delay time, you could be owed between €250-€600.

Denied Boarding on a Eurowings Flight
Many airlines, including Eurowings, will oversell flights in case some passengers cancel at the last minute or fail to make it in time. An unfortunate result of this practice is denied boarding caused when all passengers show up and there aren’t enough seats to accommodate everyone.
If this happens to you on a Eurowings flight, then you are also entitled to:
- A full ticket refund or
- An alternate flight
- Care and assistance
- Up to €600

How Much Compensation Can You Get
As we mentioned above, the amount of cash compensation you get depends on how far you’re traveling and the length of the delay at your final destination. It’s also important to note that your eligibility will depend on whether or not Eurowings was able to control the delay or cancellation.
If the flight disruption was caused by something outside their control, then the airline is not liable for paying cash compensation. We’ll cover this more in the next section.
The following table will help you figure out how much cash compensation you could get from Eurowings for a flight disruption.

What Flights Are Covered by EC261?
- Flights under 1,500km:
On flights from Paris to Rome, for example, you would be able to claim €250 in compensation for disrupted flights if your delay was over 3 hours.
- Flights between 1,500-3,500km:
Eurowings offers a flight from Helsinki to Malaga, which is 3,335km. If you had a cancellation or delay on a flight of this distance, and you arrived at your final destination more than 3 hours later than your original flight, you could expect to get €400 in compensation.
- Flights over 3,500km:
Eurowings offers a flight from Munich to Dubai that is roughly 4,565km. If you had a flight disruption on this route with a delay of more than 3 hours, then you would be entitled to up to €600 in compensation.
It’s important to note that to be eligible for cash compensation, Eurowings must be at fault for the flight disruption.

Eurowings Refund Policy
As we touched on in earlier sections, you are entitled to a full ticket refund if your Eurowings flight is disrupted and you choose not to continue on your journey. In this case, and if the airline is at fault for the delay or cancellation, then you could get cash compensation in addition to the refund.
Your refund from Eurowings could be offered to you as cash, a credit towards future flights, or as a voucher. Be careful about accepting vouchers because they can come with lots of restrictions as well as a short expiry time frame. Also, by accepting these vouchers, you may be forfeiting your right to cash compensation.
