In this guide, we’ll explain exactly what you should do during and after a flight disruption. You’ll find out how to get to your final destination more quickly and how to file a claim for compensation and out-of-pocket expenses.

Handling Vueling Flight Delays
As of November 2024, Vueling was counted as the 6th most on-time airline in Europe with 82.46% of flights arriving on time according to Cirium. So, this might mean your chances of delays are slim, but still - even the best airlines have delays from time to time.
If you learn that your flight has been delayed, ask an agent what caused it and write down what they say. Their answer can make a big difference later if you choose to file a claim.
Next, start keeping track of the time.
Once you’ve been delayed for 2 hours, you can at least get some meal and refreshment vouchers from Vueling. You’re also entitled to 2 free emails or phone calls.
Delays that last 5+ hours
Hopefully, you won’t have a delay that lasts 5 hours, but if you do, you can rebook or even cancel your flight without extra charges. In fact, if you decide to cancel, Vueling will refund the unused parts of your ticket as well as the parts you’ve already used if your trip is no longer worthwhile.
So, for example, say you booked a flight to attend a wedding in Santorini. You are scheduled to depart from Seville with a connection in Barcelona, but the flight from Seville is delayed. You wait 6 hours in the airport and realize that you will miss the wedding, making your trip pointless. Because of this, Vueling will give you a free flight back to Seville and refund the entire itinerary.
Now, if you have a 5+ hour delay and you’re rebooked on a flight that won’t leave until the next day, then Vueling must provide one night of hotel lodging AND relevant transport. So, if you can’t get a shuttle, they will provide a taxi.
What happens if Vueling doesn’t provide care and assistance?
During widespread flight disruptions, you might not be given meal tickets or hotel accommodation. If this happens, make sure you keep all your receipts, so you can submit them to the airline for reimbursement.
When the delay leads to a late arrival at your destination
If you arrive 3 or more hours late at your final destination, then you could be eligible for as much as $650 (€600) in compensation from Vueling. Whether or not you get this much depends on if the airline is at fault along with the distance of your flight, but we’ll explain this in depth later.
If your flight is delayed, do this
If you follow these steps, you’ll improve your chances of getting financial compensation from Vueling.
- Ask about and remember the cause of the delay. Some situations are not eligible for repayment, but it’s important to find out the cause regardless.
- Document everything about your delay experience. Taking photos or screenshots of the delay notification or information boards can help support your claim.
- Keep track of time, especially what time you arrived at your destination. The official arrival time is based on when the plane arrives at the gate.
- Keep all receipts for out-of-pocket expenses.
- Check to see if your flight is eligible for compensation. You can check this quickly by using our compensation calculator.
When Vueling Cancels Your Flight
If Vueling cancels your flight, you won’t be left stranded. The airline is required by law to help you get to your final destination.
To do this, they will offer you a choice: A booking on the next available flight OR a refund for the full ticket price that you’ll receive within 7 days. You can also choose a rebooking at a later date if what they offer doesn’t work for you.
Can you get compensated for canceled flights?
Yes, you can! If Vueling gives you less than 2-weeks notice of the cancellation AND they are to blame for it, then you could get up to $650 (€600). If these 2 conditions are met, then you could get compensation in addition to the refund or the rebooking.
Take these steps if your flight gets canceled
- Find out why Vueling canceled your flight and record the answer you get.
- Decide if you want an alternate flight or a refund. If you want a rebooking, either ask a Vueling agent for help, or choose a flight on your own through the website or app.
- If your new flight won’t depart for 2+ hours, ask Vueling for meal and refreshment vouchers.
- If you have to pay for anything out-of-pocket, keep the receipts for reimbursement.
- When you get to your destination, write down what time you arrive at the gate.
- Check to see if the flight is eligible for compensation.

Denied Boarding: When Vueling Overbooks a Flight
A passenger can be denied boarding, or bumped for lots of reasons, but if this happens because the flight was oversold, then you will be offered an alternate flight or a refund, plus compensation.
If you go with the alternate flight and you arrive 3+ hours late at your destination, then you could also get compensated if Vueling was at fault.
What About Missed Connections?
Missed connections can be tricky, but if your first Vueling flight was canceled or delayed and you miss your next flight, then the airline will put you on the next available flight. You could also get a return flight free of charge if you miss your connection and decide to scrap the entire trip.
You’re also owed the usual care and assistance if you’re left waiting 2+ hours for the departure of your rebooked flight, or hotel accommodations if you have to wait overnight.
Vueling Refunds
There are 3 situations when you are owed a full refund from Vueling:
- When the airline cancels your flight and you don’t opt for a rebooking
- When you have a delay of 5+ hours and you don’t choose to rebook
- When you’ve been denied boarding because of overbooking.
You might also be entitled to a refund for missed connections, but this would depend on whether the first and missed flight were part of the same booking and whether or not the airline is at fault.
You can learn more about this on our airline refunds page.
How Much Compensation Can You Get from Vueling?
Everything we’ve discussed here is based on the European Union Regulation EC 261/2004 that requires all airlines to abide by these rules when they fly in the EU.
When it comes to financial compensation, Vueling must pay passengers for the inconvenience caused by flight disruptions that are within their control based on how late you arrive and the distance of your flight. So, if you arrive 3 or more hours late, you could be eligible for between $270 (€250) - $650 (€600), as you can see in the following table.
Are there situations when you won’t get cash compensation?
Yes, if the flight disruption was caused by something that Vueling had no way of controlling, then you won’t get financial compensation. These situations are known as extraordinary circumstances and can be anything from severe weather to airport strikes.

*Vueling might try to reduce this amount by as much as 50%, but AirAdvisor always works to get the full amount.
How to File a Vueling Compensation Claim
Before you go to the claims page on the Vueling website, be sure to get all your details and information organized. All the documentation you collected, like photos, conversations you had with Vueling agents, booking receipts, etc. will come into play with your compensation claim.
It’s very important to include as much supporting evidence of your disruption as possible including any receipts for essentials that you had to purchase.
When you begin your claim, keep screenshots as you go so you can remember what you said and have proof of filing. It might take several weeks to get a response from Vueling, but when you do, keep a record of their correspondence, and if you don’t hear from them, don’t be afraid to follow up.
Problems to be aware of when filing a Vueling compensation claim
Don’t be surprised if you don’t hear from Vueling or if it takes a long time for them to respond to your submission. You can see many reviews on TripAdvisor complaining about this.
Other passengers have complained that:
- The airline doesn’t respond to follow-up correspondence
- The claim form is too complex
- They never get payment for their approved claim
