Having any flight delayed or cancelled is always a pain. Even though Aurigny is a small regional airline mainly operating flights between Guernsey and the rest of the UK, they are not immune to flight disruptions.
In June of 2023, due to technical issues with one of their planes, Aurigny had to cancel 6 flights. While this may not sound like very many, as a percentage of the roughly 30 daily flights they offer, it's actually quite high. When asked about these flight cancellations, Aurigny stated:
Unfortunately, due to the technical fault and subsequent wait for a replacement part to be shipped to Guernsey, we have significant disruption to our flight network for today and into tomorrow. We are extremely sorry for the disruption that this has caused to your travel plans.

As an airline based in the UK, Aurigny is bound by regulation UK261 when it comes to flight delays, cancellations, missed connections, and denied boarding.
What is UK261 Compensation?
This UK-based regulation sets the ground rules to hold airlines like Aurigny accountable for many types of flight interruptions. There are specific situations when the airline has to issue compensation. The actual amounts vary based on flight distance and range from £220 to £520 per passenger.
What Aurigny Flights Are Covered by UK261?
Since Aurigny is a UK airline, basically every flight is eligible for UK261 compensation, provided a few other conditions are met. Aurigny only offers flights that either depart or land in the UK (usually Guernsey), so as long as this is the case, compensation is a possibility.
Aurigny Air Services Flight Delay Compensation
For Aurigny passengers to qualify for UK261 flight delay compensation, their flight must be delayed by at least 3 hours. The 3-hour+ delay must be from the originally scheduled arrival time, not the departure time.
Another stipulation is that the Aurigny flight delay must be caused by the airline. Otherwise, it’s considered extraordinary circumstances, which is an exception to the regulation. So, if the interruption is the result of bad weather, a non-airline strike, or a security threat, for example, Aurigny is not required to issue UK261 compensation.
How Much Aurigny Flight Delay Compensation Can Passengers Claim?
As we briefly mentioned, the UK261 compensation amounts depend on the overall distance of your Aurigny flight. Here’s how it breaks down for all airlines:

While UK261 allows up to £520 in flight delay compensation, with Aurigny, there are no current flights above 1,500km available. This is due to Aurigny’s fleet of small aircraft incapable of flying longer distances. In the summer, Aurigny often has routes between Guernsey and Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza, but even these are under the 1,500km limit.

Aurigny Flight Cancellation Compensation
When your Aurigny flight is cancelled with less than 2 weeks' notice, you may be able to claim cancelled flight compensation. The amounts are the same as for Aurigny flight delay compensation and are dependent on distance and the absence of extraordinary circumstances. So, if you have a cancelled flight and the replacement flight arrives 3+ hours after the original one, you could be entitled to UK261 up to £220 (because there are no longer flights available with Aurigny currently).
But that’s not the only compensation you can claim. When you’re stuck waiting at the airport for hours for your new flight, Aurigny is also responsible for keeping you comfortable. Known as the right to care, the airline must provide basic services, such as drinks and meals, phone calls, hotel stays, and airport transfers. Passengers qualify for this when flights are delayed by at least 2 hours, and next-day departures generally warrant a hotel room and transportation to and from the airport.
Lastly, when the airline cancels your flight, they are required to either issue a full refund or find you a new (acceptable) flight at no extra cost. One thing to note is that if Aurigny offers a reasonable replacement flight that arrives at a similar time and you decline, you may end up forfeiting your right to a refund and UK261 compensation.
Aurigny Flight Refunds
With Aurigny, whether or not you can get a flight refund depends on the type of fare you selected at the time of booking. Of the 3 fare types, Light, Smart, and Flexi, only Flexi is 100% refundable. The Smart fare can be changed on the day of the flight for no additional fee. This applies if you are the one cancelling the flight.
On the other hand, when Aurigny cancels the flight, they have to either give you a new flight with a similar arrival time or provide a full refund, regardless of the fare type you paid for.
And luckily, refund and UK261 compensation are different things, so you can potentially receive both on a flight cancelled by Auriginy less than 14 days before departure.
What To Do When Aurigny Flights Are Cancelled or Delayed
To save yourself some of the headache associated with claiming UK261 compensation directly with Aurigny, do a bit of leg work ahead of time:
- Confirm the flight interruption reason with Aurigny staff at the airport or call their customer service department. This is to eliminate extraordinary circumstances as an excuse not to pay.
- Keep all relevant documents. This includes receipts for meals, hotels, and other necessities, your boarding pass, photos if applicable, and any communication you received from Aurginy about the interruption.
- Make sure your right to care is honoured. Always check with the airline to see if they are issuing vouchers for things like food and hotels or if you should pay in advance and then seek reimbursement.

- Avoid vouchers if possible. Be aware that travel vouchers can have significant limitations and expiry dates. Only accept a voucher instead of UK261 compensation if you think the amount is higher and you know you’re going to use it promptly.

In the UK, passengers have a maximum of 6 years to file an Aurigny UK261 compensation claim for disruption or claim a refund.

You’ll click submit a new report for an individual, fill out your details, and follow the prompts from there. The form will require a bunch of information, which can be daunting if you’ve never done it before.
