Iberia Express, as you may guess, is owned by Iberia, and is a low-cost airline based out of Madrid. You won’t find long-haul flights with this carrier, but what you will find are affordable fares throughout Europe and a few to Africa and the Middle East.
Flight delays and cancellations can happen with this airline even though Cirium awarded Iberia Express the On-Time Performance Award for European Airlines for 2023. When asked about the award, the CEO, Carlos Gómez Suarez, said:
At Iberia Express, we strive to maintain ambitious standards of efficiency and excellence in our operations to provide the best experience to our customers on each flight. This achievement is a source of pride for us because it serves as a testament to the commitment and dedication of the entire Iberia Express team.
In 2023, 84.58% of the company’s nearly 41,000 flights arrived on time. But if you’re one of the over 15% of passengers who encountered a delay, you may be eligible for compensation - read on.

Your Passenger Rights
As an airline based in Europe, Iberia Express is required to honour two similar regulations about passengers’ rights - EU261 and UK261.
What is Iberia Express EU261 Compensation?
The EU261 regulation stipulates scenarios when airlines are required to issue flight interruption compensation. This includes cancellations, delays, missed connections, and overbooking. The compensation amounts range from €250 to €600 per passenger when the specific conditions are met.
What is UK261 Compensation?
Since Iberia Express also flies many routes to London, Manchester, and Edinburgh, it’s worth noting that UK261 is basically a duplicate of EU261, but for flights leaving from the UK. The compensation and conditions are the same, and in local currency, you can receive up to £520.
What Flights Are Covered?
On this airline, any flight that is leaving or arriving at an EU airport is eligible for EU261 compensation. Similarly, any flight leaving from the UK is also covered by UK261.
Iberia Express Flight Delay Compensation
To qualify for flight delay compensation, your flight must be delayed upon arrival (not departure) by at least 3 hours. Now we know that this sounds promising, but there is an exception called extraordinary circumstances that applies here. So, just because you have a lengthy delay doesn’t mean you’re immediately covered.
Extraordinary circumstances are things that happen to cause a flight interruption that the airline can’t control. As a result, they are not liable to pay. Common extraordinary circumstances include:
- Bad weather prevents the safe operation of the flight.
- Airport-related disruptions, such as security issues, air traffic control limitations, or baggage handler strikes.
- Manufacturing defects in the aircraft.
But, if your flight is delayed for something preventable, you likely have a case to claim Iberia Express flight delay compensation. Here are some examples:
- Iberia Express staff strikes.
- Poor aircraft maintenance.
- Insufficient staff to operate the flight safely.
So, if you know that the delay was caused by something the airline could have foreseen and taken steps to prevent, and your flight was delayed by 3 hours or more, you should have a case to claim.
How Much Iberia Express EU261 Compensation Can You Get?
Now for what everyone wants to know: how much can you expect to claim in EU261 compensation? The actual amounts are distance-dependent and are capped at €600. Here’s the breakdown:
- All Iberia Express flights under 1,500 km - up to €250 per person.
- Iberia Express internal EU flights over 1,500 km - up to €400 per person
- Iberia Express non-internal EU flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km - up to €400 per person.
- Iberia Express international flights over 3,500 km - up to €600 per person.
To tie everything together, here are a few examples to demonstrate the eligible routes and which regulation applies:
Departure | Arrival | Flight Distance | Maximum Compensation | Applicable Regulation |
London Heathrow | 1,250km | €250 (£220) | UK261 or EU261
Madrid-Barajas | Stockholm Arlanda | 2,600km | €400 | EU261 |
Palma de Mallorca | 2,140km | €400 | EU261
Madrid-Barajas | Marrakech | 1,050km | €250 | EU261 |
Tel-Aviv | Madrid-Barajas | 3,550km | €600 | EU261 |

Iberia Express Flight Cancellation Compensation
In the case of cancelled flight compensation, passengers are eligible if they are informed of the cancellation less than 14 days before the scheduled departure date. This type of disruption also carries the limit of extraordinary circumstances. So, no compensation is due if Iberia Express can prove the cancellation was caused by things beyond their control, such as severe weather, security risks, or air traffic control strikes.
First, if your Iberia Express flight gets cancelled, they will generally try to re-book you on the next available flight at no extra cost. Depending on the options, can agree to the new flight, ask for an alternative, or demand a refund if the new flight isn’t suitable.
Tip: Iberia Express flight cancellation compensation does not apply when the re-booked flight arrives at a similar time to the old one. Compensation comes into play if the replacement flight arrives more than 3 hours later than the original one.
In addition to EU261 compensation, if the cancellation results in an extended wait at the airport, passengers are entitled to meals, refreshments, hotel accommodations (if necessary), and transportation between the airport and the hotel. Passengers are also entitled to two free telephone calls or emails. This is called the right to care.
Iberia Express Flight Refunds
Aside from compensation, Iberia flight refunds are possible in some scenarios. If your flight is cancelled by the airline and there are no acceptable replacement flights, you can get a refund if no extraordinary circumstances are involved.
Acceptable replacement flights must arrive within 3 hours of the originally scheduled flight, otherwise, you have the right to refuse and opt for a refund. Additionally, if Iberia Express suggests a replacement flight with a similar arrival time and you turn it down, you may lose out on the flight refund and any EU261 compensation.
Alternatively, if you need to cancel your flight for any reason, a refund is possible, but only with certain fares. Classic Plus and Flex fares allow you to make one change without a penalty. The Flex fare is the only seat class that allows a refund if you cancel your flight, but there is still a fee associated with the refund.
Passengers should always accept refunds in cash and avoid vouchers. Vouchers can have limiting expiry dates and may not be valid for every flight.

What To Do in Case of Cancellations or an Iberia Express Delayed Flight?
- Confirm the interruption reason with Iberia Express staff. You’ll need this to validate the claim.
- Collect proof. Iberia Express will likely ask for some (or all) of the following: photos, expense receipts, your Iberia Express booking number, vouchers, and correspondence.
- Insist on your basic benefits/right to care at the airport.
- Check your eligibility for compensation with our free online compensation calculator to know what kind of compensation to expect.
Iberia Express Denied Boarding Compensation
Not only does EU261 cover delays and cancellations, but it also applies to overbooking. This is simply when Iberia Express oversells the flight and too many passengers show up for the number of seats available. Some passengers will be denied boarding, and this, too, can result in compensation of up to €600.
Learn more about denied boarding compensation in our expert guide.
Iberia Express Missed Connection Compensation
Let’s say that you have connecting flights booked on the same reservation and an Iberia Express delay causes you to miss your connection. If that happens and you eventually arrive more than 3 hours late, you can potentially claim up to €600 in missed connection compensation.
How To Fill Out an Iberia Express EU261 Claim Form
There is no specific Iberia Express EU261 claim form on their website. You’ll need to complete the general customer service form and select a reason (delay, cancellation, missed connection, or denied boarding), depending on your situation.
What To Do if the Iberia Express Claim Form Isn’t Working
Sometimes the airline’s website isn’t working, which also prevents you from completing the online form. Or, the form will spit out an error message whenever you try to submit it. Whatever the reason the form isn’t working, why not claim with us instead? It’s quicker and easier than dealing with Iberia Express directly.
What is the Time Limit for Compensation Claims?
The time limit varies by country, but in the UK and Ireland, passengers can claim up to 6 years after the incident. In Spain, it’s 5 years.

Hello, I am writing regarding my flight with Iberia Express, reservation number K39WB, flight I23981, main ticket 0602307439681 (with a total of 6 tickets). This flight, scheduled to travel from TLV to MAD on August 8th, was canceled by the airline just 2 days before departure. I am seeking compensation of 600 Euros per ticket due to the cancellation, which I believe was unjustified. The airline's security concerns do not apply in this case for several reasons: 1. At the time of cancellation, there were no prohibitions from AESA regarding flights to and from Israel. 2. The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs had not imposed travel restrictions to or from Israel at that time; any warnings in place had been in effect since October 7th. 3. There were no restrictions on flights operating in Israel. 4. Several foreign and local airlines, such as Air France, continued to operate flights from Israel to Europe. 5. No immediate threats were reported at the time of cancellation, and any perceived threats were likely based on interpretation rather than concrete evidence. It appears that the flight was canceled due to risk management considerations rather than actual security concerns. Therefore, the airline's security reasoning does not justify the cancellation.
Our flight was meant to depart at 7am local time. They then kept delaying the flight every 30minutes without giving passengers any information on why the flight was delayed, or whether its status would remain 'delayed' or would eventually become 'cancelled'. We waited for the departure for 7hours, from 7am to 3pm. And we still don't know why the delay. I was going to Madrid for work and this was very stressful and tiring. I live in Berlin, so I would have easily had time to go home and rest and come back to the airport later but due to the lack of communication on what was going on, this was not possible.
