Oman Air has been reaping the benefits of their hard work as seen with their 2023 on-time performance of 92.53%. Not only were they the most punctual airline in the Middle East and Africa region, but they achieved the “highest score among all carriers across all categories” according to Cirium.
As if that weren’t enough, Cirium reports that Oman Air achieved some impressive global rankings. The airline was 8th for the World’s Best First Class Airline Seats, 12th in the World’s Best First Class Airlines, and they won several other awards including the #27 seat in the World's Top 100 Airlines list. With all this, it might seem like a bad experience isn’t likely, but on the rare occasion you do have a flight disruption with Oman Air, you’ll know what entitlements you have under EU and UK law.

Your Passenger Rights
In the European Union and the United Kingdom, air passengers’ rights are protected by EU261 and UK261 respectively. Both sets of regulations protect you and ensure that you are treated fairly whenever you encounter lengthy delays, cancellations, missed connections or denied boarding.
Depending on the length of your delay combined with the source of what caused it, Oman Air is responsible for giving you care and assistance and cash compensation. In short, you could receive any combination of the following:
- Care and assistance (meals, refreshments, access to communication)
- Cash compensation
- Alternate flights
- Refunds

Oman Air Delayed Flights
Our people are the heart and soul of our airline. We are driven by a passion that embodies exceptional professionalism and going above and beyond to create extraordinary and unforgettable moments for every guest.
This is what Oman Air CEO Abdulaziz Al Raisi said upon receipt of the airline’s 2023 awards.
You might be wondering how the airline treats their passengers when they have a flight delay? Well, if your Oman Air flight is scheduled to depart from an EU or UK airport, they will have to treat you according to the laws of these regions, and that means you can expect compensation.
How the length of your delay affects compensation
Whenever you’re delayed for 2 or more hours, the airline must give you care and assistance. This translates to free meals and refreshments plus access to communication.
Arriving at your final destination at least 3 hours past your scheduled arrival time, means that Oman Air needs to compensate you in cash if they could have avoided or prevented the delay. For example, if the disruption was caused by scheduling problems, then they are liable.
Should your flight be delayed by 5 or more hours, then the airline must try to alleviate the situation by giving you the choice of a refund or a rebooking. On top of this, you could also get financial compensation when extraordinary s=circumstances weren’t at play.
Length of Delay | Compensation & Entitlements |
2+ hour delays | Meals, refreshments, and access to communication |
3+ hour delays | Cash compensation if the airline is at fault |
5+ hour delays | Option of rebooking or refund + potential cash compensation |
Oman Air Cancelled Flights
Cancelled flights are typically less common than flight delays. Nonetheless, they still occur even with award-winning airlines. What’s important to remember is that you’re covered by EU and UK regulations any time you’re departing from airports in these areas.
This being the case, when your flight is cancelled and you’re given more than 14-days notice before departure then the airline will help you by providing a rebooked flight at no extra charge or a refund. However, if you’re given this much lead time, you won’t be eligible for cash compensation.
By contrast, if your flight is cancelled with less than14-days notice, then Oman Air is required by law to give you a rebooking or a refund as well as care and assistance for delays of 2 hours until your alternate flight. You can also get an overnight hotel stay and transport between the accommodation and the airport should your new flight leave the next day. Then, if Oman Air is to blame for the cancellation, you could also get financial compensation.
Involuntary Denied Boarding
Every now and then Oman Air will sell more tickets than seats. This is a practice known as overbooking, and it’s a tactic used by many airlines to ensure a fully booked flight. While doing this helps the airline make more money, it isn’t as fortunate a situation for passengers who are denied boarding as a result. If this happens to you, the Air Oman is required to give you:
- A replacement flight or
- A refund and
- Cash compensation
But be warned. If you’re intoxicated or you don’t have the proper documents ready at the gate when and you’re denied boarding as a result, then you will not be eligible for cash compensation.
Missed Connections
Fortunately, EU and UK passenger rights regulations also protect you when you experience missed connections. Most of the time, this results from earlier flight disruptions. The good news is that you can get a rebooked flight to your next connection or to your final destination plus cash compensation as long as your flights were all on the same booking and if Oman Air was responsible for the earlier disruptions.
Cash Compensation from Oman Air
The cash compensation you could receive is based on:
- The duration of your delay
- The distance of your flight.

Extraordinary Circumstances
Oman Air is exempt from paying its passengers financial compensation if extraordinary circumstances are at play. Basically, if your delay or cancellation resulted from the following situations, the airline has to compensate you in cash.
Examples of extraordinary circumstances
- Airport strikes
- Severe weather
- Natural disasters
- Civil unrest
- Security threats
- Air traffic control restrictions
PRO TIP: Remember to ask airline and airport staff what caused your flight disruption when it happens. This is important because airlines will often try to use extraordinary circumstances as a way to avoid compensation payouts. If you have proof of what caused your flight disruption, your compensation claim will be much stronger.
