How Frequent Are Norwegian Air Shuttle Disruptions?

As far as delays go, Norwegian Air Shuttle fares better than most, but any flight can be interrupted. Using data from the Eurocontrol 2023 report, we found that the Norwegian Group is fairly consistent and 81% of their flights in 2022 and 2023 arrived on time. Although the airline is a full 10% above the average, that still leaves nearly 1 in 5 flights that encounter a delay.

The trend in cancelled flights is a little more concerning. In 2022, the company’s cancellation rate was 0.60%, whereas in 2023, it increased to 1.35%. That means that in 2023, of Norwegian’s 82,791 flights, over 1,100 showed up on the flights cancelled list. In real terms, that translates to 3 cancelled flights per day.

Why Are Flights Cancelled by Norwegian Air International?

Although probably not what you want to hear, cancelled flights (with any airline) are unavoidable. Norwegian’s overall flights cancelled rate is fairly low, but we’ve already seen higher cancellation rates on certain routes.

Asking Norwegian why a flight is cancelled is the only way to know for sure, but common cancellation causes include:

How Can You Avoid Norwegian Flight Disruptions?

Unfortunately, you can’t. It’s never the airline’s goal to cancel flights, so in general, they take every action possible to prevent cancellations. But, here are a few tips to try to decrease your flight’s chances of ending up on the Norwegian disruptions list.

  • Book flights that depart as early as you can. As a plane progresses through the day, it can easily accumulate delays on previous routes. The earlier you fly, the lower the chances of your aircraft arriving late.
  • Avoid connections. It’s usually preferable to fly direct anyway, but another bonus is that it’s too easy to miss connections when you have multiple flights in a row. One delay early in the trip can derail your entire journey. Plus, fewer flights means less exposure to interruptions.
  • Don’t take the most delayed and cancelled routes. Try to avoid booking any of the specific flights we mentioned above, as these are much more likely to end up on the Norwegian problems list. Luckily, several other Norwegian routes for these flights offer better on-time and cancellation rates, so shop around.

Steps To Take When Your Norwegian Route is Interrupted

  1. Make alternate arrangements. To avoid excessive delays and counteract cancelled flights, look for different options as soon as you find out that your flight is on the Norwegian disruptions list. Then, you can still continue your trip. Act fast because hundreds of other passengers may be simultaneously trying to do the same thing.
  2. Check for updates. Consult our Norwegian flights delayed list regularly to stay ahead of changes. With this information, you can adjust your behaviour, and either leave later for the airport or search for better alternatives.
  3. Learn about your rights.Regulation EU261, which covers disruptions for all EU-based airlines has all the info you need. When you know the limit of the airline’s financial liability, you can act appropriately if Norwegian tries to make you an offer for the inconvenience. We have a free compensation calculator that tells you your expected payout in a couple of minutes.

When you look to make a Norwegian compensation claim, remember that we have a team of airline compensation experts who have done it all before. With us, your chances of success are higher and you won’t have to go through the arduous process yourself.
