What You Need to Know About Airline Compensation
Did you know that nearly 90% of passengers miss the chance of claiming up to €600 (£520) simply because they didn’t know about their rights?
It’s true! So, let’s take a quick look at your rights as an airline passenger in the EU and UK.
Any time you travel with a UK or EU-based airline OR whenever you depart from an EU or UK airport, you are protected by the regulations known as EU261 and UK261. The two sets of rules are nearly identical. In fact, the only real difference is the currency: UK261 compensation is paid in British pounds and EU261 compensation is paid in Euros.

Step 3
Once you determine your eligibility and how much compensation you can get, it’s so easy to begin the claim submission process! All you have to do is answer a few more questions as seen below.
How Much Can You Get?
One of the rules in these regulations state that passengers are entitled to compensation when their flight is cancelled, the amount of which is determined by:
- The length of the passenger’s delay at their final destination, and
- The overall distance of their flight.
In short, your eligibility for compensation begins when you arrive 3 or more hours late at your destination. Once you meet that criteria, the amount of money you get is determined by the flight distance as seen below:
- €250 (£220) for flights shorter than 1,500 km
- €400 (£350) for flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km
- €600 (£520) for flights over 3,500 km
But it isn’t this straight forward. Other factors come into play including whether or not the airline was to blame for the cancellation, if you choose to accept an airline voucher, and how long ago the cancelled flight happened.
Passengers travelling in other regions, for example the US and Canada, may also be able to get compensation from the airline, but this will depend on which airline you choose and where you travel.
The good news is that the Cancelled Flight Compensation Calculator can determine your eligibility and give you a general idea about how much you can get without having to sort through the endless details.
