What happens when Aeromexico loses your baggage? As an air passenger, you have rights that protect you in these situations. In this guide, you’ll learn how to handle baggage problems caused by the airline, and how to proceed with your baggage compensation claims.

Key Points

  1. You can claim up to roughly €1555 in compensation for Aeromexico lost baggage.
  2. To get the money you’re owed, you must follow the filing guidelines or the airline will deny your claim.
  3. Your passenger rights for lost, damaged, and delayed baggage are protected by the Montreal Convention.

Your Rights

If you’re traveling with Aeromexico, then any baggage mishandling issues you encounter will be covered by the rules of the Montreal Convention. Under the rules of this international treaty, the airline is liable for up to €1555 per passenger for delayed, damaged, or lost baggage. The Montreal Convention also stipulates that reports and claims must be filed within certain timeframes in order to be eligible.

What Causes Lost Baggage

  • Labor shortages
  • Technical problems
  • Conveyor belt malfunction
  • Outdated technology
  • Human error
  • Poor communication

Understand the Difference Between Reports & Claims

Before we go any further, it’s important to make the distinction between these two terms because it makes a difference if you want to receive as much compensation as you deserve.

A report: Always report baggage issues immediately either at the airport or on the Aeromexico site. A report tells the airline about your baggage problems and gives them an opportunity to rectify it. If you don’t report your baggage issues then your claim will not be successful.

A claim: Think of a compensation claim as step 2. This is what you submit to the airline after your report. You will include all the supporting documentation about your baggage mishandling in order to be reimbursed and/or compensated.

If you don’t see your baggage on the reclaim carousel, then find the Aeromexico Baggage Desk and make a Property Irregularity report. If no one is available, you can visit the Aeromexico site and report your lost baggage there. Providing your information on the Property Irregularity Report will help the airline locate your baggage. Once they find it, they will contact you and forward it to the address you provided in the PIR.

After your report has been filed, you can use the PIR number check on your bag’s status within the system. Continue checking the status until the airline contacts you or until 21 days elapses, at which point your missing luggage will be considered officially lost.

Buying replacement essentials

If your baggage is missing while you’re away from home, you can purchase the items you need and Aeromexico will repay you for these purchases as long as they are truly essential like clothing, toiletries, and other items you need for traveling.

If Aeromexico finds your lost baggage, then you can file the compensation claim and include all your receipts for the purchases you made along with the PIR number from your report. Otherwise, wait for 21 days to hear from the airline before proceeding with the compensation claim.

Aeromexico Damaged Baggage

If your baggage is damaged when you arrive at your destination, then take the following steps while you’re still at the airport.

  1. Report your damaged bag to the Aeromexico Baggage Service Office
  2. Complete the Property Irregularity Report (PIR)
  3. Take photos of your damaged bag

Once you’ve filed a report, you can submit your claim by following the step listed above.

Your damaged baggage claim must be filed within 7 days of receiving your baggage.

  • Signs of regular use
  • Small rips, scuffs, or scratches
  • Damage from faulty packing
  • Damage from poorly constructed baggage
  • Pre-existing damage

Filing Aeromexico Damaged or Lost Baggage Compensation Claims

The next step after filing a report is filing your compensation claim. You can find the portal for this on the airline’s website. Simply gather the following supporting information and submit it to Aeromexico.

Documents needed for your baggage compensation claim

  1. Property Irregularity Report
  2. Passport or Photo ID
  3. Bag tag
  4. Flight itinerary
  5. Receipts for essential purchases

Remember to submit your claim within the following time frames listed in the table below. After you submit your claim, just wait for someone from the airline to contact you. Be patient, because it can sometimes take a month or longer.
