In Cirium’s monthly on-time performance report, All Nippon (ANA) placed second behind Singapore airlines for top on-time performers in the Asia Pacific region. The report added that 82.85% of ANA flights arrived on time in February 2024.
While Cirium’s monthly statistics for ANA are impressive, the airline’s ranking in Cirium’s yearly review is even moreso. All Nippon ranked as the top on-time performer in the Asia Pacific region for 2023 with 82.75% of their flights arriving on-time. In these statistics, on-time refers to a flight that arrives within 15 minutes of their scheduled arrival time. So, what happens if you have a ANA flight that is delayed more than 15 minutes or even cancelled? All Nippon Air Passenger Rights
Even with their impressive performance, All Nippon will still have the occasional delay or cancellation. When you have an ANA flight that departs from the EU or UK, you can rely on the air passenger rights in those regions that protect you from flight disruptions. More specifically, all airlines must comply with the rules found in EU261 and UK261. Both regulations set out to ensure the fair treatment of passengers if they have to deal with delays, cancellations, denied boarding, or missed connections.
So, if your ANA flight is disrupted, you can at least get care and financial compensation for some situations. The following table explains what you can expect to get from All Nippon for each of the flight disturbances we mentioned.
UK261/EU261 Compensation
Flight Delays | Flight Cancellations | Denied Boarding |
Up to €600 in compensation Care & Assistance | Up to €600 in compensation Rebooked flight OR Refund Care & Assistance | Up to €600 in compensation Rebooked flight OR Refund Care & Assistance |
All Nippon Delayed Flight Compensation
If your ANA flight is scheduled to depart from the EU or UK but is delayed, you can enjoy some of the best air passenger rights in the world. Of course this is a small consolation if you were hoping to be somewhere with a specific time frame, but it is something to ease the sting of flight disruptions.
Flight delay compensation is offered based on the number of hours you’re delayed. Whether or not you get financial compensation depends on if the airline was able to avoid the delay. Let’s take a closer look at the details.
- 2 Hour Flight Delays - You’ll be given complementary food and drink
- 3 Hour Flight Delays - The airline should offer you the above and also cash compensation
- 5 Hour Flight Delays - You should be given the above as well as the option to end your journey and get a refund or the choice of a rebooked flight.
Bear in mind that ANA might not immediately offer you care and assistance, so don’t hesitate to request vouchers or coupons for these things. If you aren’t given them or if you forgot to ask, then keep all your receipts. You can submit these for reimbursement.
Cancelled Flight Compensation with All Nippon
If your flight from the EU or UK is cancelled, then the carrier will have to help you get to your intended destination or offer you transport back to your point of origin. Here’s how this works.
If your flight is cancelled more than 14 days before departure, then you can reschedule or get a refund, but you won’t be offered compensation.
If ANA cancels your flight and gives you fewer than 14 days notice, then again, you have the option of a rebooking at no extra charge or a refund should you decide not to travel. Also, short-notice cancelled flight, you will also be eligible for cash compensation as long as ANA isn’t to blame for the disrupted flight. More on this later.
If you’re given very short notice, as in you’re already at the airport when you find out about your cancelled flight, then the airline must provide you with:
- A rebooked flight or
- A refund and a flight back to your starting point, and
- Cash compensation if the airline is culpable
Additionally, if you have to wait for 2 or more hours then you should be given care and assistance. If you have a rescheduled flight due to depart the next day, then All Nippon needs to provide overnight lodging and transport there and back.
ANA Denied Boarding & Missed Connections
From time to time, an airline like All Nippon will oversell a flight with the assumption that at least a few passengers won’t show up. When they do, the carrier must figure out how to accommodate all passengers. First they’ll ask for volunteers to give up their seats for miles or compensation, but if no one comes forward, then ANA has to involuntarily bump people from the flight.
This is known as involuntary denied boarding. As long as this happens solely because of oversales, then you can get compensated for your inconvenience. First, the airline must help you find another flight to get you to your destination or allow you the choice of a refund. Then, the compensation you receive will be based on how late you arrive at your final stop combined with the distance of your journey.
For passengers who miss a connecting flight because earlier ANA flights were delayed or cancelled, the airline will again help you with a rebooking. You can also get compensation based on the number of hours you are ultimately delayed if the airline is at fault.
All Nippon Compensation
The amount of financial compensation you end up getting will depend on the delay time and the distance of your flight as seen in the table below.
EU and UK Compensation | |||
Delay Time | Flight Distance
Flights under 1,500km | Flights between 1,500-3,500km | Flights over 3,500km
Over 3 hours | €250 | €400 | €600* |
Under 3 hours | €0 |
* All Nippon might try to reduce this amount by as much as 50%, but AirAdvisor always works to get the full amount.
Extraordinary Circumstances
We’ve mentioned that you can get cash compensation when ANA is at fault for the flight disruption, but what does this mean and what happens if they aren’t to blame?
Airlines will only pay you cash compensation if they should have been able to prevent or avoid the disruption. Basically, if they had a hand in or were able to control the reasons behind your delay or cancellation, then they are liable. Otherwise, they will tell you that the disruption was caused by extraordinary circumstances - or a situation beyond their control.
Some commonly seen cases of extraordinary circumstances are:
- Air traffic control restrictions
- Dangerous weather conditions
- Strikes or other problems at the airport
- Civil unrest
- Security threats
Whenever you have a flight disruption, take a minute to find out what caused it. You can do this by asking airline or airport staff and writing down their response. This will come in handy when you file your compensation claim.

Austrian airlines canceled the flight and claimed there was no compensation because it was a political dispute, and thus they were not obligated to. However, I was able to fly in on another airline, so air travel was possible. My flight on the 20th of September was canceled on the 18th. I rebooked it for the 25th, but it was canceled again on the 24th. I managed to change the flight to Larnaca (Cyprus) and had to purchase another airline's flight to Tel Aviv. Overall, I was delayed by 6 days, and had to pay for lodging during this time, plus another flight.
