Delayed Smartwings Flights
Your entitlements for delayed flights hinge on the length of time you have to wait and the role Smartwings played in causing the delay.
So, for example, if you have had to wait 2 or more hours for your flight to depart, Smartwings must supply you with food and drink. These usually are given in the form of vouchers. If you don’t receive them, ask and always keep your receipts if you pay out-of-pocket for anything.
Similarly, if you have to wait until the next day because of a delay, then Smartwings must provide accommodation and related transport.
If your flight is delayed for 5 hours or more, you’ll have the choice of a refund or a rebooking, as well as a return flight to your departure airport if you don’t want to continue with your trip.

Cash compensation is also a possibility if the delay makes you 3 or more hours late at your destination and if Smartwings is at fault - meaning they could have prevented the delay from happening.
When Your Smartwings Flight is Cancelled
For cancelled flights, here’s what you can expect to receive from the airline.
- Rebooking or refund
- Cash compensation: You can get financial compensation if the cancellation was avoidable and you were notified less than two weeks before departure. If you were notified more than 2 weeks before your flight, you will still get a rebooking or a refund, but cash payment won’t be provided.
Denied Boarding Compensation
Every so often, Smartwings will oversell a flight and deny boarding to some passengers. If you’re bumped from a flight because of this then:
- You can choose a refund or an alternate flight.
- You’re also entitled to cash compensation.
Missed Connecting Flights
If you miss a connecting flight because of a previous Smartwings flight disruption then you are entitled to:
- A rebooking OR a refund, and possibly cash compensation if the airline is at fault.
- Cash compensation as long as all flights were booked together and Smartwings is at fault for the initial disruption.
The Regulations Protecting You
In the EU, Regulation EC 261/2004 protects you when you have flight disruptions. The UK has similar rights under UK261. In fact, all the entitlements we’ve mentioned here are outlined in these two sets of regulations.
How Much Compensation Can You Get From Smartwings?
Financial compensation is based on the distance of your flight and the length of your delay. So, if you end up arriving at least 3 hours past your scheduled arrival time then you will get compensated as follows:

Flights under 1,500 km | €250 (£220) |
Flights between 1,500-3,500 km | €400 (£350) |
Flights over 3,500 km | €600 (£520*) |
*Smarwings may attempt to reduce this amount by 50%, but AirAdvisor fights for the full compensation you deserve.
When Compensation Doesn’t Apply
Financial compensation isn’t guaranteed if the Smartwings delay or cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances which is anything the airline is unable to control or prevent, including
- Airport strikes
- Civil unrest
- Air traffic control restrictions
- Severe weather
