Eurowings Lost Baggage: How to Get Compensated for Damaged & Delayed Bags
If you’ve ever had your checked baggage lost by Eurowings, then you know how stressful the experience can be. You can see your travel plans dissolve right before your eyes. But there is some hope for recovery if you find yourself in this situation. Read on to learn how you can rectify baggage mishandling woes. From damaged to delayed baggage, we’re going to show you what to do to get the problem sorted and to get compensation from Eurowings for your troubles later on.
The baggage compensation limits by the Montreal Convention were updated in October 2024, growing from €1,600 to roughly €1,920. Understanding your rights to cover baggage loss, damage or delay is more vital than ever!
Key Points
- When your checked bags are lost, the most important step is to make a lost baggage report.
- As an air passenger, your rights are protected by the Montreal Convention.
- If Eurowings loses or damages your baggage, you could be eligible for up to approximately €1,920 in compensation.
Reporting Lost & Damaged baggage: The Most Important Step
While you’re at the airport, report your mishandled baggage to the Eurowings Baggage Counter. This step is extremely important because not only will reporting your lost baggage help the airline find it and deliver it to you more quickly, but by taking this step, you can ensure that you’ll be eligible for claiming compensation from Eurowings.
Some passengers skip the reporting step and assume that the airline will just deliver their baggage to them once it’s been found. After a day passes, they make the lost baggage report with Eurowings. If you make the report later or skip it entirely, then you might get your bags, but you will be ineligible for compensation.
The Montreal Convention
You see, your rights concerning baggage mishandling are protected by an international treaty called the Montreal Convention. This treaty requires airlines to compensate passengers up to approximately €1,920, but it also stipulates certain steps that must be taken within certain time frames in order to be eligible for compensation.
How to Report Lost or Delayed Baggage
So, the first step you should always take is to report your baggage issue as soon as you realise there is a problem.
- Find the Eurowings Baggage Help desk or make an official report on the Eurowings site.
- You’ll be asked to complete a Property Irregularity Report.
- Keep a copy of the report and the associated number.
- Use the number to track the status of your baggage.
- Wait for the airline to contact you about delivery.
What To Do About Essentials When Your Baggage is Missing
When you’re away from home without your baggage, then you will need toiletries, clothing, and other essentials to hold you over until your bags are located. The good news is that the airline realises this and will reimburse you for these purchases as long as you have the receipts.
Eurowings states that they will provide €30 a day per person for 3 days to cover essential purchases.
How to Report Damaged Baggage
If your baggage is damaged when it arrives on the carousel, then you should go directly to the Baggage Help Desk and file a report with Eurowings. Once again, they will ask you to complete a Property Irregularity Report and inspect the damage. It’s a good idea for you to take some photos of the damage as well so you can use this as evidence to support a compensation claim.
If you don’t notice the damage until you arrive at home or your destination, then you still have 7 days to report the damage. You can do this on the Eurowings site, where you’ll be prompted to complete a Property Irregularity Report.
After you’ve filed the report, you can have your baggage repaired, but remember to retain the receipts and a report from the repair shop. If your luggage is too damaged to repair, then be sure to get a statement of this from the repair shop. You will need it to file a compensation claim.
How to File a Eurowings Baggage Compensation Claim
If you’ve taken all the steps to report your damaged or lost baggage, then you can file a compensation claim with the airline.
If your bags were damaged, then you can make your claim right away, but if your baggage is missing, you will have to wait until 21 days have passed to file a claim because baggage is only considered officially lost when it has been missing for 21 days. Until that point, the airline will consider your bags delayed.
To file a claim, send an email to: baggage@eurowings.com
What to Include in Your Eurowings Baggage Compensation Claim
Your email should explain why you’re writing and whether your baggage was lost or damaged. You should also attach copies of:
- Property Irregularity Report and associated number
- Photos (if your baggage was damaged)
- Receipts for essential purchases
- Receipts or proof of purchase for items that were lost, if your baggage was never returned to you.
- Flight information like a boarding pass or ticket info.
Once you send the email, you will have to wait for Eurowings to contact you about their final decision. Be patient. This could take a few weeks to a few months, but you can always follow up with another email to check the status of your claim.
