When using travelling by air, it’s essential to be aware of your rights as a passenger and the available channels for addressing airline complaints or seeking resolution. Delta Air Lines, commonly known as Delta, is a prominent airline operating many flights daily. While striving to deliver exceptional service, the airline acknowledges occasional issues may arise during your journey.

In such instances, AirAdvisor, your trusted passenger rights advocate, can help. In this article, we aim to guide you through common Delta Air Lines complaints and provide contact information to help you address your concerns effectively.

What Can You Make a Complaint About

As a passenger, you have the option to file a complaint with Delta regarding various issues that may have arisen during your travel experience. Here are common reasons passengers file complaints with Delta Air Lines:

  • A Delayed or Cancelled Flight: If your Delta flight experiences significant delays or is cancelled, you can file an official complaint to express your dissatisfaction and, in some instances, seek Delta delayed or cancelled flight compensation for the inconvenience. Your eligibility for flight delay compensation or cancelled flight compensation depends on where your Delta flight departs from.
  • Denied Boarding: If you face boarding denial due to overbooking, you can file a complaint with Delta Air Lines to address the situation and request a full flight ticket refund in addition to monetary compensation, irrespective of your country of departure.
  • A Baggage Issue: If, when flying on Delta, your luggage is lost, damaged, or delayed, you have the right to file a complaint and request reimbursement for any expenses incurred as a result.
  • A Customer Service Concern: If you’ve encountered poor customer service from Delta Air Lines, you can submit a complaint to address the issue and provide feedback regarding your experience.
  • Inadequate Compensation: If you believe the compensation offered by Delta for a flight disruption or other inconvenience you experienced is insufficient, you can file a complaint to request a reassessment of the compensation provided.
  • An Accessibility Concern: If you’ve encountered challenges or received insufficient assistance related to accessibility, you can file a complaint with Delta Air Lines to draw attention to the issue and prompt the airline to take necessary measures to improve accessibility.
  • Billing Disputes: If you have any concerns regarding refunds, overcharges, or billing disputes with Delta Air Lines, filing a complaint can initiate an investigation by the airline.

If you face a scenario with Delta that compels you to complain, retaining any supporting documentation can help bolster your complaint and compensation claim, if you make one. Supporting documentation can include boarding passes, receipts, or any correspondence with the airline.

Know Your Passenger Rights

When travelling on Delta on flights originating from or within the United States, your travel rights are principally dictated by US laws. Conversely, if your Delta flight leaves from a country within the European Union (EU), you might be eligible for protection under EU Regulation 261 from 2004. Discover the basics of your passenger rights in both the US and EU below:

United States

In the US, passenger rights are overseen by the US Department of Transportation (DOT). The DOT has established guidelines and rules to protect you in the case of a variety of flight disruptions, including delays and cancellations, boarding denials due to overbooked flight, luggage complications, and more.

These rules guarantee certain privileges and options for remediation, should there be interruptions or difficulties during your travel from or within the US. However, these rarely involve financial reimbursement.

Europe

In Europe, EU261 safeguards your travel rights of passengers. This regulation protects you in situations like flight delays, cancellations, denied boarding, and luggage issues.

The law provides various privileges and options, including financial compensation. The compensation amount is determined by the flight's distance and the duration of the delay or cancellation. If you qualify for financial compensation under EU261, the amount may range from $280 to $670.

How to Make a Complaint to Delta

A good first step can be to initiate contact with the Delta customer service team and present your case, ensuring you include any corroborative materials that support your claim. Be sure to articulate clearly what you would consider to be a fair resolution, but ensure your demands are within reason.

It’s essential to keep track of all correspondence and dealings you have with Delta Air Lines throughout the process and follow up on your complaint, and even elevate the matter within the organization as necessary.

Should you find the process overwhelming or feel that your rights as a passenger are not being adequately represented, it might be beneficial to seek help from a third-party organization. For instance, our expert team at AirAdvisor is here to champion your passenger rights on your behalf.

Technical problems

Hi there, I had a horrible experience on my last trip from Detroit to Cairo H6TDD9 on December 10th, 2024. My flight from Paris to Cairo was delayed after barding for almost 5 hours while setting inside the airplane… then after 5 hours they decided to cancel the flight and send us to hotel, and promised to put me on another flight the next morning. I showed up the next morning at the airport and I was told that my only option is to fly to Roma and from there they will connect me to Cairo. After arriving to Roma, there was no flight to Cairo that day and no one to help me at all. After a long stressful day without any help or customer service, I had to stay at a hotel again and wait for a flight on Egypt air the next day. After finally arriving to Cairo 3 days later, my luggages were no where to be found… till few days later I was able to pick one luggage form Air France and the 2nd form Egypt air… both luggages were damaged and many of my belongings were damaged. I filed a complain with both Egypt Air and Air France and they both denied responsibility and told me that it was Delta’s responsibility. As result of all the delays and mishandling my luggages, I missed my brother’s wedding ceremony and my damaged and delayed belongings.

After an initial delay of 45 minutes the passengers boarded the aircraft. Once we begin the take off process the aircraft abruptly stopped while at top-speed after attempting to take off. At this point we were informed that the plane would be returning to the gate. The passengers were told that the delay time was unknown. Passengers were invited to deplane with no specificities of how long the delay would last. By 22:00 (3hrs/40minutes after the scheduled departure) the aircraft departed the gates at DTW. This unprecedented delay interfered with my connecting flight which was scheduled to depart at 9:15 from Amsterdam. I was rebooked on a different flight from AMS-BIO departing at 14:02 and arriving at 17:00. This process in its entirety cause a 6 hour delay for my arrival to my final destination.

Arriving in Amsterdam, I talked to a KLM representative saying that I will be missing my only bus from Berlin to Rostock, and I had to spend the night in Berlin. They told me to talk to a KLM representative at the destination, in Berlin, which I did. The Berlin representative gave me a pamphlet of what costs are covered (food, hotel and taxi), which I took into consideration when booking my hotel for the night.

My flight from Berlin to Amsterdam was so heavily delayed that I missed my connection flight to New York JFK. I had to spend the night in Amsterdam and arrived more than 24h too late.

I was charged $500.00 extra for five bags!

Feb 6, 2025
At 6am on 02/03/2025 my wife and I checked in at the Delta Priority Counter. We were there since 5:45am and that was fine. The lady that came to our counter did not smile, did not say good morning she had a look on her face that said what do you two want. We gave her our pass ports and she looked us up. My wife and I are both frequent fliers with Delta and my tickets were purchased with sky miles (68,000 miles for two one-way tickets) and I felt very good being part of Delt and American Express Platinum card holder. Everyone at some time or another has a bad day, but this woman was beyond that. I am 78 years old, and I have not had an experience like this before. It was time for our luggage to be wade. The first bag weighed in at 53 lbs. The lady said to remove three pounds be for the bag can be loaded. I took the second bag, and it weighed 55 lbs. and I was told to remove five lbs, from the bag or it will not be loaded. The third bag was weighed in at 52 lbs. The fourth bag weighed in at 53 lbs. and the fifth bag weighed in at 54 lbs. I told the lady that it was not possible to remove the overage and could she let us pay for the overage. She gave me a look like the kind I had in Viet Nam when looking at a communist who wanted to kill me. She then said all right, and pointed to the first bag and said, this will be a hundred, then the second bag, this will be a hundred and on down the line, a hundred, a hundred and a hundred. What made it even worse was she seemed to enjoy it. There were four bags that each had LESS than five lbs. of overage and one that was over by five lbs. The overweight came to $500.00. I would like to point out that the plane was not full. I asked the lady if the flight was full, and she said probably. I know she was wrong because I called Delta as to my wife's seat and my seat and was told that the flight had plenty of available seats left. So, my bags were not a weight issue. I waited a few days before contacting Delta. I needed to calm down. I want to say that the team that crewed that aircraft were super. Delta is a fine airline. But I feel that I was wronged. Please to me if you want more information.

When my mom arrived in Amsterdam she was told to wait for a wheelchair escort. She waited several hours and no one came so she walked on her own (with a cane for assistance and carrying her carry-on bag) to find somewhere else to sit and wait for news on a new flight. My mom was supposed to arrive in Utica on the night of 21 January. She did not make it home until late on the 22 January.
