For the Asia Pacific region, Air China ranked as the 2nd most on-time airline in January 2023 with 87.60% of flights arriving on time. Meanwhile, the carrier has been rated a 3-Star Airline by Skytrax. Regardless of their ranking or even their performance statistics, all airlines have flight disruptions on a fairly regular basis. The important thing is that passengers know their rights when they’re faced with them.

Air China Flight Delays

Despite their best efforts, pro planners and seasoned travellers alike still have to deal with flight delays. The silver lining of this is that if you are departing from an EU or UK airport, you can enjoy the passenger protections found in EU261 and UK 261. Both sets of regulations stipulate compensation for delays. So, depending on how long your delay lasts, you can benefit from different provisions.

Delays lasting 2 or more hours

You get to the airport on time and then find out your flight is delayed. If this happens, and you’re left waiting for at least 2 hours, the carrier must provide you with food, refreshments, and free access to communication.

Delays lasting 3 or more hours

When you get to your final destination 3 or more hours past the time you were supposed to arrive, then Air China may be liable for cash compensation if they are at fault. So, if your delay was caused by an airline strike, you should be paid compensation because this is within the airlines’ control.

Delays lasting 5 hours or more

Hopefully you won’t have to deal with delays this long, but if you do, Air China must give you the option of a ticket refund or another flight. Cash compensation is also a possibility if extraordinary circumstances didn’t cause the delay.

Air China Flight Cancellations

If you’re scheduled to leave from an EU or UK airport and your Air China flight gets cancelled, you can get cash compensated if:

  • You’re given less than 14-days notice and
  • The airline is at fault

If you’re given more than 2-weeks notice, AIr China doesn’t have to compensate you. However, you are entitled to a new flight or a full refund if they cancel with under 14 days advance warning.

When you choose an alternate flight, but have to wait for at least 2 hours for your departure, then you can get care and assistance. Plus, you should be given free overnight accommodation and transport in cases where your new flight departs the next day.

Missed Connections

EU and UK law protects you for missed connections. This means that if an earlier flight delay or cancellation causes you to miss your connection, then Air China is required by law to assist you in getting to your final point. There’s a chance that you could also get cash compensation too if the airline could have avoided the problem that caused your missed connection.

Involuntary Denied Boarding

Most airlines, including Air China, will overbook flights from time to time to avoid operating a partially filled aircraft. They do this to maximise profits, but when all passengers arrive for the flight, there aren’t enough seats to accommodate everyone. If no one offers to relinquish their seat, then the carrier will have to bump a few people.

If you’re denied boarding because of an oversold flight, then you can expect:

  • A replacement flight or
  • A refund and
  • Cash compensation

Cash Compensation Amounts

Thanks to the passenger rights protections in the UK and EU, you could get between €250 to €600 in financial compensation for flight disruptions based on:

  • The length of your delay
  • The total distance of your flight
