2 emails were sent (one on 6th Feb and another on 7th Feb) communicating the departure was delayed from 10:40am to finally 2:55pm. At the airport check in we asked the reason for the delay and the agent said it was maintenance. Our scheduled arrival in JFK was 1:35pm and we eventually landed at 5:59pm. When I emailed AA customer service the response was the delay was due to damage caused by a lightning strike and they are not paying compensation. Perhaps this lightning issue was the case for the inbound flight as this was also delayed to 1pm from a scheduled arrival around 8am, so it appears they are applying the knock on effect as the reason to deny compensation.
