Get up to €10,800 for a disrupted trip

Without Emirates check-in, you won’t be able to board a plane. Getting your boarding pass is an essential component of any flight and the procedures and time limits can be confusing, especially during busy periods.
Emirates is seeing a significant increase in passenger numbers year over year. According to a press release, in 2023,
more than 75,000 Emirates customers departed Dubai International Airport daily, but in 2024 – these numbers have risen as high as 89,000 on some days, representing an increase of almost 20%.
This increase is especially noticeable during peak periods like December and Eid (fluctuating dates) and can impact the Emirates check-in deadlines and result in much longer lines.
So, your best bet is to have a quick read through this guide to solidify all the time limits and ways you can check-in. Then, you’ll be 100% prepared for a seamless trip.
Completing your Emirates check-in tells the airline you’re ready to travel. The process makes sure you have a seat and can check the desired number of bags. And once done, the system issues the all-important boarding pass, which is your gateway to the airport and getting on the flight.

In 2023, Emirates switched to electronic boarding passes exclusively for flights from Dubai Airport. Even passengers who check in at the airport will have their boarding pass emailed or sent by SMS. The same goes for luggage receipts, which are also viewable in the app.
In their statement, Emirates said:
Taking a step forward in its drive to offer customers the convenience and assurance of digitally enabled travel journeys, Emirates will require most passengers departing Dubai to use a mobile boarding pass instead of a printed paper version, from 15 May onwards.
But, if you don’t have a mobile device, you can still request a printout from the airport counters. Whatever method you choose, you have to complete Emirates check-in to get your boarding pass. This pass lets you drop bags, get through security, and eventually board the flight.
Certain fares allow passengers to select seats free of charge, while others are chargeable. For example, an extra legroom seat is always a paid addition for any of the Economy fares, whereas selecting a regular seat is free for Economy Flex and Economy Flex Plus.
When you check in with Emirates, you can choose your seat and pay for the charges if applicable. Otherwise, the system will automatically assign one to you.
If you missed the opportunity to add a checked bag when you booked your flight, you can add it when you check-in. Emirates operates on either a per-piece or weight limit, depending on your fare and route. Generally, at least one bag is included up to 20kg.

Checking in early has its upsides, but how early does Emirates check-in open? Online, it’s 48 hours before the flight, and at the airport, the counters are usually available 3 hours ahead of the departure. When you do Emirates check-in online well in advance, you can look forward to:
It’s important to know how long before an Emirates flight you can check in and when check-in closes for the various options:
To simplify your experience on the day of the flight, Emirates allows passengers to check in their bags 24 hours ahead at Dubai Airport. This is unless you’re flying to the US when the advance bag drop opens 12 hours prior to departure.
Also, from 24 hours to 4 hours before the flight, Emirates offers other bag drop options in the city at ICD Brookfield Place, located at the Dubai International Financial Centre. This may be more convenient than dragging your bags to the airport.
Emirates requires passengers in Economy and Economy Plus classes to be at the boarding gate at least 1 hour before the flight. Alternatively, for First or Business class, the deadline is 45 minutes ahead of departure.
With Emirates, you can check in online, with the app, using the airport kiosks, or at the airline’s airport counters. Certain lucky passengers can also do free Emirates check-in right from their home or office.

Does Emirates allow online check-in? Absolutely! It’s their preference. We also know that online check-in for Emirates is open from 48 hours to 90 minutes before the flight. In this timeframe, you have 2 options to pull up your booking on the Emirates website to check in online. The first is to log in to your existing account, and the second is to simply enter your last name and booking reference number.
Once you locate the correct trip, click check-in and the system will guide you through the various prompts to get your boarding pass. The prompts include:
Remember that Emirates online check-in closes 90 minutes before the flight, so if you’re too late, the system won’t let you check in. Additionally, you may trigger an exception with banned items. Or, you could be ineligible for online check-in in the first place - trips where the first flight is not through Emirates are excluded, for example.
As long as everything goes smoothly, you’ll receive your unique boarding pass. This can be downloaded or emailed, whichever is preferable.
The procedure to check in with the app is very similar to the website. The only difference is that you will likely already be logged in for ease of finding your trip, and the system will remember your travel info like seat preferences and documents.
Follow the same check-in prompts and get a mobile boarding pass right in the app - very easy to pull up at the airport.

If your flight isn’t eligible, like when your route starts on a different airline or you’re traveling with a pet, you won’t be able to check-in online. Also, sometimes you’ll run into a technical issue preventing you from completing the process.
When Emirates online check-in doesn’t work, consider downloading and using the app instead. This may address any technical problems. Otherwise, arrive at the airport with enough time to check in there via the agent counters. They’ll assist you with any challenges.

Depending on where you’re flying from, the kiosks are a great option for check-in at the airport. They act the same as the online process, but some will issue a paper boarding pass at the end.
In Dubai, the kiosks are paperless and will send an email or text with your boarding pass. An added benefit of the kiosks here is that you can control them entirely on your mobile without touching the screen. Of course, using the screen also works.
When you’ve tried all the other options or are in Dubai and don’t have a mobile device, you can stand in a potentially long line for service at the airport counters. The staff will check your documents and assign you a seat. Even if you’re using this option, you can still have your boarding pass emailed in Dubai if you prefer to stay paperless.
Emirates passengers who are Skywards Platinum Members or are flying first class have the option to check in at home through the DUBZ service. This option is available for flights departing from Dubai or Sharjah only.
The agents will come to your home, office, or hotel and complete your Emirates check-in. Then, they will take any bags you are checking off your hands. It’s possible to book this service up to 24 hours before your flight. If you have this luxury, your airport experience is sure to be a breeze!

Instead of wasting time chatting or calling Emirates customer service, you can easily manage your booking on the website or in the app. You’ll access your trip in the same way as if you were checking in - just click on the appropriate option.
Some of the components you can easily manage include:
Was your Emirates flight cancelled on short notice? Up to £520 in compensation could be possible. Check your flight’s eligibility here.Check Your Flight
In general, for a flight from Dubai Airport, Emirates recommends arriving at the airport 3 hours before your flight. This will ensure you have enough time to check in, drop bags, and get through security to your gate with an hour to spare.
For some routes and airports, the airport arrival time can be as much as 4 hours. Check your booking reference and boarding pass to be sure.
It’s simple, if you don’t adhere to the deadlines, Emirates is likely to bump you from the flight or not allow you to check in and receive your boarding pass - which is basically the same thing.
If you haven’t checked in within the allotted 90 minutes before your flight, Emirates assumes you are not flying. So, if another passenger is waiting for a seat, they will assign yours to them. Always try to get to the airport within the recommended 3-hour window to check-in and as long as you have at least 90 minutes before departure, you should be ok. Alert the counter agents ASAP if there is a long line.
Keep in mind that in the case of flight delays, you may have a grace period. If you arrive late, always double-check with the Emirates counter agents to see if you can still get your boarding pass to make the flight. It never hurts to ask, right?
