For passengers departing from the United Kingdom, UK261 passenger protection rules apply, which can provide compensation of up to £520 per passenger in certain situations. However, if your flight departs from the United States, your rights are governed by US Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, which offer fewer protections.

Below we explain how both systems work, what you may be entitled to, and what steps to take if your travel plans are disrupted.

Key takeaways

  1. If your United flight departs from the UK and arrives at your destination more than 3 hours late, you could be entitled to compensation of up to £520 under UK261.
  2. Airlines are only required to pay compensation when the disruption was within their control, such as technical issues or staffing problems.
  3. Meals, refreshments, and hotel accommodation may be provided even if compensation isn’t a possibility.
  4. UK rules allow compensation for denied boarding, while US law provides a separate system that can pay up to 400% of the ticket price.
  5. If your United flight is cancelled, you’re entitled to a rebooking or a refund no matter where you’re departing from.

What rights do you have when you fly United Airlines?

Passenger rights laws are decided by your departure point. For example:

  • A United flight departing from London Heathrow, Manchester, or any other airport in the UK is protected by UK261 passenger rights law.
  • A United flight departing from any airport in the United States must follow the rules set by the US Department of Transportation regulations.

This means that United is subject to completely different rules depending on where your journey begins.

Here’s what you can expect under each system.

Part 1: United flight delays and cancellations for UK departures (UK261)

Flights departing from the United Kingdom are covered by UK261, which is one of the most comprehensive passenger protection laws in the world.

UK261 applies to all airlines departing from UK airports, including international carriers like United Airlines. This law protects passengers when you have a delay, cancellation, you miss a connection, or you are denied boarding due to overbooking.

Depending on the situation, you may be entitled to:

  • Cash compensation
  • A replacement flight or ticket refund
  • Meals and refreshments during delays
  • Hotel accommodation if an overnight stay is required

United Airlines compensation under UK261

You may be eligible for compensation if one of the following situations occur:

  1. Your flight arrives 3 hours or more later than scheduled
  2. Your flight is cancelled at short notice
  3. You miss a connecting flight because of an earlier delay
  4. You are denied boarding due to overbooking

However, compensation only applies when United is responsible for the disruption. So, if your flight is delayed or cancelled for any of the following reasons, you could be eligible for a payout:

  • Technical faults with the aircraft
  • Crew shortages or scheduling problems
  • Operational issues within the airline

On the other hand, compensation is usually not payable if the delay was caused by extraordinary circumstances, such as severe weather, airport closures, air traffic control restrictions, or security incidents.

How much compensation could you get from United?

The amount of compensation you get depends on how far you travelled and how long you were delayed when you arrived at your final destination.

Many United routes between the UK and the United States fall into the long-haul category, meaning passengers may be entitled to the maximum £520 compensation if the arrival delay exceeds three hours and the airline is responsible.

Your right to care during delays

Even if compensation does not apply to your flight, United Airlines is still required to provide care and assistance during long delays. Under UK261, this obligation begins once delays reach certain thresholds based on flight distance:

  • 2 hours or more for flights under 1,500 km (932 miles)
  • 3 hours or more for flights between 1,500 km and 3,500 km (932 - 2,175 miles)
  • 4 hours or more for flights over 3,500 km (2,175 miles)

Once these limits are reached, you must be given reasonable care while you wait for your flight, including:

  • Meals and refreshments
  • Access to communication, such as 2 phone calls or emails free of charge
  • Hotel accommodation if an overnight stay becomes necessary
  • Transport between the airport and the hotel
tip

If your delay reaches 5 hours or more, you have the legal right to abandon your journey and receive a full ticket refund if you don’t accept a rebooking on another flight. This is an important protection under UK261 and applies even if the airline still intends to operate the flight later.

quotes

One subtle but important detail of UK261 is that compensation is based on the arrival time at the final destination, not when the flight departs. A flight that leaves only slightly late can still qualify for compensation if delays during the journey push the arrival time beyond the three-hour threshold. – Michael Higgens, Solicitor of England & Wales

If United cancels your flight from the UK

When a flight departing from the UK is cancelled, you must be offered a choice between:

You may also be entitled to compensation of up to £520 if United cancelled the flight less than 14 days before the scheduled departure and the disruption was within the airline’s control.

Also, while waiting for your replacement flight, you must still receive care and assistance, including meals and accommodation if necessary.

Missed connections on United flights departing the UK

If you miss a connecting flight because your United flight departing from the UK was delayed or cancelled, you may still be entitled to compensation under UK261.

What matters is the arrival time at your final destination.

If the delay causes you to arrive 3 hours or more later than originally scheduled, and the disruption was within United's control, compensation may be owed based on the total distance of your flight.

Because missed connection claims involve multiple flights and arrival‑time calculations, airlines often dispute them. Keeping proof of your original itinerary and final arrival time can make the claim much easier to resolve.

Denied boarding on United flights from the UK

Airlines sometimes sell more tickets than there are seats on the aircraft, a practice known as overbooking. When this happens, you may be denied boarding. If you’re bumped from your flight, United must provide up to £520 per passenger based on the distance of your flight.

Part 2: United flight delays and cancellations for US departures

Passengers departing from the United States are protected by Department of Transportation regulations, which differ significantly from UK passenger rights laws.

Unlike UK261, US law doesn’t generally require airlines to pay cash compensation for delays or cancellations. Instead, the regulations focus primarily on refund rights and passenger assistance.

What you’re entitled to if your United flight is delayed

Passenger protections for flight delays in the United States are much more limited than in the UK or Europe. US law does not require airlines to provide cash compensation simply because a flight is delayed.

However, there are still certain situations where passengers have rights.

Refunds for significant delays

The US Department of Transportation requires airlines, including United, to provide a full refund if a delay becomes significant and you decide not to continue with your travel plans.

This applies when:

  • Your flight is cancelled and you choose not to travel, or
  • Your flight experiences a significant delay and you decline the alternative travel arrangements offered by the airline.

The DOT generally considers delays to be significant when they reach:

  • 3 hours or more for domestic flights
  • 6 hours or more for international flights

If you decide not to travel because of the delay, the airline must refund the unused portion of your ticket to the original method of payment. Airlines may offer travel vouchers, but you are not required to accept them.

Assistance during long delays

While not required by law, United’s own policies state that they may provide assistance when delays are caused by controllable reasons. This may include:

  • Meal vouchers
  • Hotel accommodation if the delay requires an overnight stay
  • Transportation to and from the hotel

These services are part of the airline’s customer service policy, rather than a legal requirement.

What recent flight data shows about United delays & cancellations

To better understand how often disruptions occur, we analysed 655,282 United flights over the past 90 days (4 December 2025 to 4 March 2026).

The data provides a useful snapshot of the airline’s operational performance and what passengers might realistically encounter.

What this means for passengers

Most disruptions occur on short-haul routes, which is typical for large airline networks. However, long-haul flights are not immune to delays or cancellations.

warning

For UK passengers travelling to the United States, a long-haul delay of more than 3 hours could potentially qualify for £520 compensation under UK261, provided the airline was responsible for the disruption.

Because delays do happen, it is always advisable to keep boarding passes, booking confirmations, and receipts for expenses, as these may be needed if you decide to make a compensation claim later.

How to file a compensation claim with United

If your United flight departing from the UK was delayed, cancelled, or caused you to miss a connection, you can submit a compensation claim directly with the airline. United accepts claims through its online customer care form.

While this option is available to passengers, many find the process time‑consuming. United may request additional documentation, dispute the cause of the delay, or take several weeks to respond. In more complex situations, such as missed connections or multi‑leg journeys, claims can become particularly difficult to resolve.

This is where services like AirAdvisor can help. Instead of navigating the airline’s claims process yourself, AirAdvisor’s legal specialists review the flight data, build the claim according to UK261 rules, and handle communication with the airline. For many passengers, this makes the process faster and far less stressful.

The case below shows how this works in practice.

How AirAdvisor secured compensation for a Heathrow delay, missed connection & next-day arrival

The situation

Hayley was travelling on United from London Heathrow to Newark, with an onward connection to New Orleans. The flight out of Heathrow was delayed on the ground, and they sat on the runway for around 3 hours, which meant Hayley missed the connection at Newark and did not arrive in New Orleans until late the next morning.

How AirAdvisor helped

AirAdvisor collected the key evidence (booking confirmation, flight details, and the updated arrival time), framed the claim around a missed connection with a 3+ hour arrival delay, and included Hayley’s out-of-pocket costs where relevant. This is where many passengers get stuck, because airlines often treat missed connections like a separate problem rather than part of the same disrupted journey.

The outcome

The claim resulted in £520 in compensation and £220 in additional expenses, for a total of £740 returned to the passenger.

Frequently asked questions

Does UK261 still apply if only part of my journey is outside the UK?

If your journey starts at a UK airport, UK261 protections apply to the entire itinerary on that booking, even if later flights take place outside the UK. This means long‑haul journeys connecting through the US or other countries may still qualify for compensation if the delay affects your final arrival time.

What counts as the “final destination” for compensation purposes?

Your final destination is the last airport on your booking confirmation, not the airport where the delay happened. For example, if you booked London → Newark → Miami on one ticket, Miami is considered the final destination when calculating delays and compensation eligibility.

What if United says the disruption was caused by extraordinary circumstances?

Airlines sometimes deny claims by stating that the delay was outside their control. Examples can include severe weather, air traffic control restrictions, or airport closures. However, airlines must still prove that the situation truly meets the legal definition of extraordinary circumstances and that they took reasonable steps to avoid the disruption.

Can multiple passengers on the same booking claim compensation?

Yes. Compensation under UK261 is calculated per passenger, not per booking. If several travellers on the same reservation experienced the same disruption, each passenger may be entitled to compensation.

Do children qualify for compensation as well?

Yes. If a child had a confirmed seat and ticket on the flight, they are usually entitled to compensation just like adult passengers. The amount depends on the delay and flight distance, not the passenger’s age.
