Warsaw Chopin Airport
Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW) ranked second in the world in AirAdvisor's Summer Connection Risk Index 2026, earning a score of 9.15 and a place in the index's top "Safest" tier. The certificate was issued by AirAdvisor International Inc. in May 2026, recognizing Chopin as one of the most dependable hubs in the world for passengers with connecting flights.
How the ranking works
The index ranks 20 of the world's busiest hub airports across North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific on how likely they are to cause a missed connection. Each airport is scored on four criteria: the share of flights delayed 60 minutes or more (45%), the cancellation rate (25%), the average delay duration (15%), and total summer flight volume as a measure of operational stress, scored inversely (15%). The criteria combine into a single score from 5 to 10, where a higher number means a safer connection.
Because summer 2026 data is not yet available, the index blends two windows: summer 2025 weighted at 70%, when airports run at peak capacity and disruption is highest, and Q1 2026 weighted at 30% as the most recent directional signal.
Why Warsaw Chopin earned #2
Chopin is Poland's largest and busiest airport, moving millions of connecting passengers every year. Its 9.15 score reflects strong results across all four criteria: a low rate of long delays, few cancellations, short average delays when they do happen, and a passenger load it handles without the strain seen at the world's mega-hubs. Together that puts Chopin second globally and the safest major hub in Central and Eastern Europe.
What it means for travelers
If your trip includes a layover, the hub's reliability decides whether your itinerary holds together. Connecting through Warsaw Chopin lowers the odds of a missed connection, a rebooking scramble, or a separated bag.
When disruption does happen, your rights still apply. If a delayed or cancelled flight on a single ticket causes you to miss a connection, you may be entitled to up to 600 EUR under EU Regulation 261/2004, depending on the airline and the circumstances. AirAdvisor checks your eligibility and handles the claim on a no-win, no-fee basis.
