Understanding the Check-in Process
For seasoned passengers, the pre-flight drill is just another step in getting to your destination. But if this is your first time flying, you might be thinking, “Why do I have to go through check-in instead of going directly to the gate?”
Why Check-in is Important
- It gives the airline a way to verify who you are and check your passport and other travel documents to ensure you meet flight requirements.
- You get your boarding pass - something you need to get through security, confirm your seat, and board your flight.
- You can add, change, or drop-off checked baggage.
- Check-in lets the airline know that you still plan to take the flight you booked.
- For Eurowings, the process is needed for safety, security, and logistical reasons.
Documents You’ll Need
- A valid Eurowings booking and reference number
- Your passport or ID card
- Visa documents if this applies to your situation
When To Check-in with Eurowings
This depends on whether you do this online or at the airport, but in most cases you can check-in for your flight online anywhere from 72 to 3 hours before your plane departs.
If you plan to check-in at the airport, you can do this from 2 hours to 40 minutes before departure.
Eurowings Check-in Methods
As with most airlines, Eurowings offers passengers 4 ways to check-in for their flight:
- Online
- On the app
- At a kiosk
- At a check-in counter
It’s important to note that all these methods are free except the check-in counter option. To use this method, you have to either be a SMART or BIZclass customer or you have to pay a fee.
If you think you would rather check-in at one of Eurowings’ desks, then you should choose this option when you book your ticket as the fee is just €2.50. If you don’t purchase this option ahead of time it will cost €15 per passenger.
Late Night Baggage Drop
Eurowings has created a way to make your airport experience faster and much more convenient by offering a late night baggage drop. While only available at certain airports, this allows you to check-in online and then leave your luggage at the airport the day before. So, if you have a flight any time before noon, you can use this service and avoid the added hassle of checking bags.
You can do this for free at the baggage kiosks or for €5.00 per passenger at one of the desks.

How to Check-in Online
Online check-in includes the Eurowings website and the Eurowings App. The process will be very similar regardless which method you choose.
Eurowings App
It’s always a good idea to download the airline’s app even if you don’t plan to use it for check-in. Most of the time, the check-in process is easier via the mobile app, but it also gives you notification of any changes or updates to your flight. Not only that, but you can use the mobile boarding pass in the app as well.
Nevertheless, you can occasionally run into problems like Raphael C. did in May 2024 when he tried to check-in with the Eurowings app. He left a review on Tripadvisor saying,
The online check-in process was a nightmare. I couldn’t check improperly and ended up having to pay extra at the airport. They didn’t send any reminder emails either. Very frustrating!
Other passengers like Tour31801206658 reported a much better experience as you can see from this October 2023 Tripadvisor review.
The check-in process was easy and quick, especially when I used their mobile app. The staff at the airport was friendly and helpful. No long lines, and everything went smoothly.
If you do have problems during online check-in, take a screenshot of the error message and show this to the airline agent at the Eurowings counter.
Steps for Checking-in Online: 72 hours to 40 minutes before departure
Online check-in is designed to be easy and straightforward for all passengers. Once you log in to your booking, simply follow the prompts. The basic steps you’ll be taken through are listed below.
- Step 1: Either download the Eurowings app or navigate to the airline’s website.
- Step 2: Then, enter your booking code and last name.
- Step 3: Enter or verify your travel documents (passport, ID card)
- Step 4: Choose your seat(s)
- Step 5: Add or change baggage preferences
- Step 6: Add or change any additional services
- Step 7: Download, save, and/or print your boarding pass
- Step 8: At the airport, print your bag tags for checked luggage at a kiosk or at a desk
- Step 9: Drop your checked baggage at the bag drop.
How to Check-in at the Airport
Checking-in at the airport, either at a kiosk or a Eurowings counter, is usually very simple. The biggest drawback is the potentially long queues and wait times you may have to deal with. For this reason it’s important to arrive at the airport with plenty of time to spare.
When to Arrive at the Airport
- Domestic and European flights: Arrive 2 hours prior to your flight time
- International flights outside Europe: Arrive 3 hours before your flight
- Flights to the USA: Arrive 4 hours before departure because of the more stringent security measures and extra documentation required.
How to Use Eurowings Check-in Kiosks
Typically open 2 hours to 40 minutes prior to departure
These are free to use for all passengers, and you can use them to complete all parts of your check-in or for just printing boarding passes and bag tags, and dropping off your luggage.
- To use these, touch the screen to begin
- Enter your booking number and name
- Follow the prompts to complete your registration.
Remember, not all airports will have kiosks available, so check with your departure airport first.
When Not to Use Eurowings Kiosks
Do not use Eurowings kiosks if:
- You need special assistance of any kind
- You’re travelling with a pet
- You are travelling with an infant
- You have a connection with another airline
- Your luggage weighs more than 23 kg
Instead, complete the check-in process at the counter with a Eurowings agent.
Using the Eurowings Check-in Counter
Typically open 2 hours to 40 minutes prior to departure
Eurowings check-in desk is only free for SMART or BIZclass passengers.
If you are not in one of these categories, then you will be charged a fee of €2.50 if you choose this option while booking or otherwise €15 per passenger.
This option allows you to work with an airline agent who will collect all the necessary documents and help you choose your seats, select baggage and other choices for your flight. They will also print and/or issue your boarding pass, print your baggage tags, and answer any questions you might have.
