This might sound familiar: You’re thrilled at having booked such a cheap ticket with easyJet only to find out at the last minute that your flight is canceled or delayed. Not only is the disruption frustrating, but now you’re worried about having to spend money out-of-pocket as a result.
We completely understand, but in this guide we’ll explain some things you can do to turn a frustrating experience into a more acceptable one, and you might even get a little cash for the inconvenience.

How to Handle easyJet Flight Delays
EasyJet’s overall on-time percentage in 2023 was 65%, down 4% from 2022, so the chance of encountering a delayed flight is almost 2 in 5.
So, if your flight is delayed, the first way you can benefit is by getting free meals and refreshments if the delay is 2 hours or longer. The downside is that the coupons you'll be given by easyJet are only worth £6 or $8. If you spend more on meals, keep your receipts so you can submit them to the airline for reimbursement.
When an easyJet delay lasts 5 hours or more, then you have a choice:
- Cancel your booking and get a full refund, or
- Change your flight for a different one with no extra fees, or
- Wait out the delay and get compensation.
If you decide to keep your original flight, then you’ll probably get compensated for the inconvenience. Why? Because anytime you arrive 3 or more hours late at your destination, you could be eligible for as much as $650 (£520) in easyJet compensation. This is the case even if you accept an alternate booking. If it arrives 3 hours late, easyJet might have to pay you for the inconvenience.
What if you’re delayed overnight?
If you have an overnight delay, then easyJet is responsible for finding you hotel accommodation and transport there and back to the airport. Just remember to wait at the airport for details about the hotel. easyJet will also try to arrange an evening meal for you up to $31 (£25) per person per day. But, if you have to pay for any of this yourself, keep your receipts for reimbursement.
Follow these steps when you have an easyJet delay
- Find out the reason for the delay, and keep the answer. You might need this for your claim.
- Collect evidence about the delay. Take photos or screenshots of the easyJet app, information boards, etc..
- Keep track of how long the delay lasts. If you wait two hours or more, request meal coupons. If you have to wait overnight, ask for a hotel and taxi.
- Keep any receipts for out-of-pocket expenses.
- When you arrive at your final stop, write down the time the door was opened at the gate. You’ll need this to determine compensation eligibility.

What to Do When easyJet Cancels Your Flight
It’s safe to say that 2023 was another rough year for flight cancellations by easyJet. In the summer of 2023, at the UK’s Gatwick Airport alone, easyJet preemptively canceled flights, which affected over 180,000 passengers, according to the Sun. This is similar to what the airline had to do in the summer of 2022.
Why is easyJet canceling so many flights?
When asked, a spokesperson for the carrier said:
As Eurocontrol has stated, the whole industry is seeing challenging conditions this summer with more constrained air space due to the war in Ukraine resulting in unprecedented ATC delays, as well as further potential ATC strike action up to $130 per family.
So, if easyJet cancels your flight, you can choose one of the following options:
- Accept an alternate flight offered by easyJet. They will try to get you on the next available one, but if this doesn’t work for you, you can also choose your own. If they can’t find a flight for you within 24 hours, then you can look for seats with a different airline. You can also
- Cancel your trip and accept an easyJet voucher for the value of your ticket (these are valid for 12 months), or
- Cancel your trip and request a cash refund that you should receive in around 7 days. Bear in mind that you can’t get a refund as well as an alternate flight.
Can you get compensation if easyJet cancels your flight?
Yes you can! If easyJet cancels your flight less than 14-days before your scheduled departure, then you could get compensated for as much as $650 (£520) if they were to blame. So, for example, if there was a scheduling issue or crew shortage, then the airline is to blame because these kinds of situations should have been avoided.

EasyJet’s Refunds
You can get a refund if the airline cancels your flight, no matter what caused it, or if you are delayed 5 or more hours. In order to get a refund, you have to request it on the easyJet site.
Be aware that when you go to the “Disruption Help Hub” and follow the prompts for a refund, you will be asked to “choose your voucher”. It’s important to remember that you have a legal right to a cash refund if your flight was canceled or delayed for 5+ hours.
You do not have any obligation to accept a voucher for later use. In fact, we advise against these as they are only valid for a year.

Cancellations | You’re entitled to a refund or a rebooking If the rebooked flight causes you to be 3+ hours late, then you could get compensation
Refunds | You are entitled to refunds for delays lasting 5+ hours as well as if your flight is canceled |
Denied Boarding on easyJet
Like other airlines, easyJet will sell more tickets than seats to avoid losing money on no-shows. So, if you are denied boarding because there are too many people for your flight then you have the right to an alternate booking or a refund. You can also get compensation if your alternate flight arrives 3+ hours late.
Missed Connecting Flights with easyJet
If you miss a connection, you’ll also be given a choice between a new flight or a refund if you choose to cancel. Then, as with other flight disruptions, you can get compensation if you arrive 3+ hours late and easyJet is to blame.
If the first leg of your trip was canceled because of technical problems, for example, and you miss your connection as a result, you could get compensated because in this case easyJet was to blame for your missed flight.
But, if the first leg was canceled because of a severe storm and you miss your connection, you’ll still be given an alternate flight but you won’t get compensated because severe weather is beyond the airline’s control
How Much Compensation Can You Get?
As we’ve said, compensation is based on the length of your delay and the overall distance of your flight as you can see below.
easyJet Compensation Amounts
Flights under 1,500km | Flights between 1,500-3,500km | Flights over 3,500km |
$270 (£220) | $430 (£350) | $650 (£520)* |
*easyJet might try to reduce this amount by as much as 50%, but AirAdvisor always works to get the full amount.
When You Won’t Get Compensated
EasyJet doesn’t have to pay you for the inconvenience of flight disruptions if they are unable to avoid, control, or prevent the situation that led to the delay or cancellation. Known as extraordinary circumstances, these events can be anything from airport strikes to snowstorms or civil unrest.
You can learn more about this in our article on extraordinary circumstances.
Regulations That Protect Your Passenger Rights
If you’re flying with easyJet, your rights are protected by Regulation UK261 when you fly to, from or within the United Kingdom. You are also protected by the European Union’s EU261 when you travel there with easyJet.
These two sets of rules are nearly identical. They were created to protect passengers from delays and cancellations and to ensure that you are treated fairly by the airline.
How to Submit an easyJet Compensation Claim
Are you ready to file a compensation claim? Here’s what you need to do.
Step One
- Collect all the documents and details pertaining to your disrupted flight including dates, times, booking reference number, and any supporting evidence.
- Go to easyJet’s website, and either log in or search for your booking.
- Look for the Disruption Help Hub and follow the prompts.
- Take screenshots of the form as you complete it so you have a record of what was said.
- Double check to make sure the information is correct and submit.
Step Two
When easyJet responds, be sure to keep copies of all their correspondence. You might have to wait for a few weeks to get a response, so follow up with a message and be patient. It can take 90+ days to get a decision from them.
Compensation Claim Issues
In theory, the claim process is easy and straightforward, but many passengers have trouble with the long wait times for case resolution. Also, many complain that it’s hard to get in touch with an easyJet agent to discuss their situation.
Other passengers have found that their compensation claim is denied and dismissed, and they have no way of stating their case to easyJet.
