Based in Turkey, Freebird has had a spotty on-time performance record over the past few months. According to Flighteria, Freebird’s flight from Antalya to Cologne was on time only 53% of the time in November and 65% in December. Since February, this flight has been punctual at least 80% of the time.
Given that these statistics are for only one route, you might be wondering what happens if you experience a flight disruption with Freebird.

Your Passenger Rights
In the European Union and the United Kingdom, your air passenger rights are protected by EU261 and UK261 respectively. These sets of regulations were both created to protect passengers and to ensure fair treatment for delays, cancellations, missed connections or denied boarding situations when flights are oversold.
Thanks to these regulations, Freebird must compensate you with care and assistance or cash depending on:
- The length of your delay and
- The source of the flight disruption
Your entitlements for these flight disruptions include:
- Care and assistance (meals, refreshments, access to communication)
- Cash compensation
- Alternate flights
- Refunds

Freebird Delayed Flights
So, how are your rights protected when you have a Freebird flight delay? Even though it’s a huge inconvenience, you can at least rely on EU and UK law to soften the blow.
The Length of Delay Affects Compensation
If you’re delayed for 2 hours or more, you’re entitled to care and assistance. So, when you’re stuck waiting at the airport, Freebird will have to pay for your meals and refreshment as well as access to free communication (2 calls, emails).
When you arrive at your final stop at least 3 hours past your scheduled arrival time, Freebird must compensate you in cash, but only when they are to blame for the delay. If dangerous weather or air traffic control restrictions were the cause, then the airline isn’t liable.
If your flight is delayed by 5 or more hours, then you’re due a choice of a refund or a rescheduled flight in addition to cash compensation any time Freebird is to blame as in flight disruptions caused by scheduling errors or airline strikes.
Length of Delay | Compensation & Entitlements |
2+ hour delays | Meals, refreshments, and access to communication |
3+ hour delays | Cash compensation if the airline is at fault |
5+ hour delays | Option of rebooking or refund + potential cash compensation |

Cancelled Freebird Flights
Cancelled flights are usually less common than flight delays, but they make up for it with added inconvenience. The important thing here is that if you have a flight cancelled that was scheduled to depart from an EU or UK airport, then your rights are covered by the laws in those regions.
If your Freebird flight is cancelled 14-days or more before departure then you can expect a rebooked flight at no extra charge or a refund. In this situation though, you will not be eligible for cash compensation.
If your flight is cancelled with less than14-days notice, then Freebird is required by law to give you the following:
- Rescheduled flight or
- Cash refund and
- Care and assistance (for delays at the airport that last 2 hours or more)
- Overnight hotel accommodation and transport for delays that require you to wait until the next day
- Cash compensation if the disruptions was not due to extraordinary events
Involuntary Denied Boarding
Not surprisingly, Freebird will sometimes sell more tickets than seats available on the plane in order to ensure a fully booked flight. This is known as overbooking, a situation that can lead to involuntary denied boarding. If this happens to you, the carrier is required to give you:
- A replacement flight or
- A refund and
- Cash compensation
If you’re intoxicated or your behaviour is unruly, or if you don’t have the proper documents ready at the gate, then you will not be eligible for cash compensation.
We assume all legal costs
All you have to do is submit the application and wait for the compensation to be received
Missed Connections
EU and UK passenger rights also protect you when you experience missed connections. Usually this is caused because you had earlier flight disruptions. So, if this happens to you then you can get a rebooked flight to your next connection or your final destination as well as cash compensation if these flights were all on the same itinerary and if Freebird was responsible for the earlier disruptions.
Cash Compensation Amounts from Freebird
The amount of cash compensation you receive is based on:
- The extent or your delay
- The distance of your flight.
Delay Time | Flight Distance
Flights under 1,500km | Flights between 1,500-3,500km | Flights over 3,500km
Over 3 hours | €250 | €400 | €600* |
Under 3 hours | €0 |
* Freebird might try to reduce this amount by as much as 50%, but AirAdvisor always works to get the full amount.
Freebird Airlines Flight Refund policy
A flight compensation and a refund are two different things. Regulations allow you to receive both: a cancellation refund and compensation.
In case of a cancellation, an airline will try to re-book you on the similar flight, but if that becomes impossible, a cancellation refund will be a full cash refund. Generally, your claim would succeed, providing there were no extraordinary circumstances beyond airline control.
If Freebird Airlines cancels your flight to extraordinary circumstances (such as Covid travel restrictions or a serious illness) and you were offered no replacement flight, you can obtain a ticket refund in full, since your flights booked were not available.
Types of ticket refunds: A full refund must be in cash or credit. Vouchers are allowed only if you specifically agree to it. We do not recommend accepting vouchers due to short expiry dates and potential restrictions on redemption.
Note: If Freebird Airlines offers a replacement flight with approximately the same arrival time and you decide not to take it, there is a possibility of you losing the right to get both compensation and a ticket refund.
Rule of thumb: you can generally reject alternative flights and receive a refund in full, if a new replacement flight arrives 3+ hours later from your initial scheduled arrival time.
Extraordinary Circumstances
Airlines are exempt from paying passengers compensation whenever extraordinary circumstances are to blame for the flight disruption. This means that, if your delay or cancellation was the result of any of the following situations, then Freebird won’t be liable to you for compensation.
Examples of extraordinary circumstances
- Airport strikes
- Severe weather
- Natural disasters
- Civil unrest
- Security threats
- Air traffic control restrictions
PRO TIP: Always ask airline and airport staff what caused your flight disruption. You see, airlines will often try to use extraordinary circumstances as an excuse to avoid compensation payouts, so having proof of what caused your flight disruption will really back up your case.

People Also Ask
When you have an involuntary downgraded seat on a flight, can you get compensation?
Yes! For seating class downgrades, the airline must repay you for the difference in cost, but you won’t get compensation on top of that.
How do you file a compensation claim with Freebird?
You will have to navigate to their site and look for their contact information or search for ‘Claims’. Bear in mind that you will need to compile all your travel-related documents and anything else that will support your case. Attach these documents to your letter outlining why they are filing the claim. You can also let AirAdvisor file and follow-up on the claim for you.
What about kids? Do they get compensation from Freebird?
Yes! If you purchased a ticket for your child, then they are eligible for compensation.
Can you get a Freebird Airlines refund?
If you were to cancel your flight independently, yet booked an inflexible, non-refundable fare, then you may not be able to receive a reimbursement. However, if Freebird Airlines cancelled your journey for causes beyond your control - such as bad weather or another issue regarding their operations – EU law provides you with right to receive a refund of the ticket value unused.
