Managing BA Strikes: What You Need to Know
Hearing that British Airways employees are planning to strike can be disheartening to say the least, especially if you are planning to fly during the same dates. While there isn’t much you can do to avoid the strike, you might still be able to change your ticket. If you can’t do that, then you can at least find a bit of comfort knowing that your passenger rights are protected if your flight ends up getting cancelled.
In this guide, we’re going to take you though what you need to do to prepare for strike-related disruptions, explain the details about how to alter your booking, and help you understand how your rights are protected.
You Have Rights as a British Airways Passenger
Whether your flight is disrupted because a strike is underway or just threatened, you are still covered by the laws of the United Kingdom, specifically Regulation UK261. The rules of this state that if your BA flight is cancelled or delayed because of a work stoppage, the airline must provide you with assistance, and in some cases, recompense when the right conditions are met.
What BA is Required to Do for Passengers
In addition to keeping you informed, BA must do the following if a strike is pending or already in progress, and your flight is affected as a result.
- If BA cancels your flight, you must be given a new flight at no extra cost OR a refund.
- If your flight is delayed, and you are forced to wait in the airport for at least 2 hours, you must be given meals and refreshments
- If you have to wait until the next day to resume your travel, you should be given hotel accommodation and transportation.
Will BA Repay You if Your Flight is Disrupted?
It depends. If the strike is announced, then the airline is technically able to avoid or prevent the situation, so you would be able to get repaid up to £520 if you end up arriving 3 or more hours late at your final destination. Fortunately, most strikes are called in advance.
But if the strike was sudden and unannounced (a wildcat strike), you might not be repaid because in these situations, the airline is unable to prevent the work stoppage since they didn’t know it would happen. These kinds of work stoppages are rare. In fact, the last time this happened with BA was in 2005.

Can You Modify Your British Airways Booking?
When a BA flight is called and flight disruptions are expected, the carrier will alert you by SMS, email, or through the mobile app. You can also find up-to-date information about strike action on the BA website in the travel advisory section. Chances are, however you’ll hear about it first on the news or social media.
Sometimes airlines will allow passengers to make pre-emptive booking changes, even to tickets that couldn’t normally be changed without a fee, when they know a work stoppage is unavoidable. If BA allows passengers to do this, they will let you know in the ways we just mentioned.
Here’s what you should know about modifying bookings:
- Refundable Tickets: These can be adjusted as per the ticket’s policy as usual.
- Non-refundable Tickets: Contact BA to see if changes are allowed under specific conditions or to see if they will allow you to make the changes without incurring fees
- If Your Flight is Cancelled: Wait for British Airways to cancel before requesting a refund or rebooking to a more convenient time.
