Anyone who’s ever spent hours waiting between flights knows how bad, overpriced coffee, endless announcements, and uncomfortable seats can make the time drag on. But not every airport experience is doomed to boredom and processed snacks.
A few airports have successfully transformed layovers into something passengers dread less and even look forward to. Some have rooftop pools, others have world-class restaurants, and some even have butterfly gardens or sleep pods that rival boutique hotel rooms.

To identify the best airports for a layover, AirAdvisor analyzed more than 50 of the world’s largest airports, using publicly available data and official airport directories. Each airport was evaluated across five key categories, with scores from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest) for each:
Each airport could earn a maximum of 25 points. Higher scores reflect a greater variety of amenities and a better overall experience for passengers during long layovers.
During a long layover, or if you have a significant flight delay, a proper meal can feel life-changing. But in some airports, you can find more to eat than pub food and snack packets.

These airports provide an abundance of low cost and free ways to pass the time. If you’re travelling as a family or you just don’t want to spend a fortune on food and shopping, you can stay entertained by browsing art collections, taking advantage of gaming areas, and a variety of fun kid-friendly spaces.

Years ago, resting during a layover usually meant curling up on a metal bench under harsh fluorescent lights or leaning against your luggage in a noisy terminal. Now, airports have transformed that experience entirely. In fact, some airports make it easy to truly rest, recharge, and walk onto your next flight feeling human again.

These hubs take sleeping to another level by offering nap zones, sleep pods, rest cabins, and ways to fully refresh, so you get to your destination feeling like you’ve just left a spa.

There’s one clear trend from our research. Airports in Asia and the Middle East are leading a comfort revolution. Singapore, Tokyo, and Doha consistently outperform global competitors across nearly every category.
But Europe still holds its own. Heathrow, CDG, and Munich prove that efficiency and luxury can go hand in hand. And across the Atlantic, airports like DFW and LAX are quietly upping their game, blending local character with long-haul comfort.
It all points to one thing. . . The airport experience is no longer just about getting from point A to B but about how good the “in-between” zone can feel. Instead of a long layover feeling like hours of wasted time, you can actually have enjoyable, restful and even memorable experiences.
