When your Etihad flight is delayed or cancelled, you’re protected by passenger rights Regulations UK261 and EU261 if you depart from airports in those regions. If you depart from outside the UK or EU, then the airline’s own Conditions of Carriage will protect you. This guide explains what you’re owed, how to claim it, and what steps to take when your journey doesn’t go as planned.

Summary

  1. If your Etihad flight is delayed or cancelled, you may be entitled to compensation between £220 and £520 (per passenger) if you arrive more than 3 hours late and the airline is responsible for the disruption.
  2. You’re also owed food, refreshments, plus hotel accommodation and transport during long airport waits based on the time you’re waiting and the distance of your flight.
  3. For delays lasting 5+ hours, you’re entitled to a refund or rerouting.
  4. You may also receive compensation if Etihad cancels your flight within 14 days of departure and the cause is within their control, such as a staffing shortage or technical problems.
  5. If you depart from the UAE, Etihad’s Conditions of Carriage cover you, but you will not get cash compensation for delays and cancellations.
  6. Missed connections are also covered when all flights are on the same booking and you arrive 3+ hours late at your destination.
  7. If Etihad fails to respond to your claim or if it’s rejected, you can escalate the matter to the Civil Aviation Authority or let AirAdvisor handle the process for you.

Which Passenger Rights Apply When You Fly with Etihad?

Your rights with Etihad depend entirely on where you’re departing from, not the airline itself. Since Etihad is based in the UAE, your protections change significantly depending on whether you are flying from the UK or from Abu Dhabi.

If You Fly Etihad from the UK

You are fully protected under UK261, the United Kingdom’s air-passenger rights law. This means you can receive:

  • £220–£520 compensation for delays of 3+ hours or airline-caused cancellations
  • Hotel, meals and transport during long delays
  • A refund or rerouting if your flight is cancelled or delayed 5+ hours

UK261 applies to all airlines departing the UK, including non-UK carriers like Etihad.

If You Fly Etihad from the EU

You are protected under EU261, which mirrors UK261. Compensation amounts are €250–€600, with similar duty-of-care rules.

quotes

Because Etihad is not an EU airline, EU261 only applies when the flight departs from an EU (or UK) airport. If you board Etihad outside the EU and arrive in Europe, the regulation normally does not protect you, so your rights under EU261 depend first on where the journey begins.” - Anton Radchenko, Esq., Aviation Lawyer

If You Fly Etihad from the UAE

This is where the rules change.

Flights departing from the UAE are not covered by UK261 or EU261. This means you won’t get cash compensation for delays or cancellations, even if Etihad is at fault.

Instead, you are protected by:

  • Etihad’s Conditions of Carriage
  • UAE GCAA (General Civil Aviation Authority) Guidelines

What Happens if Your Etihad Flight is Delayed?

If your fight is delayed, you’ll get compensation from Etihad if:

  1. You’re departing from the UK or the EU,  and
  2. Your flight arrives at least 3 hours late at your destination, and
  3. Etihad is responsible for the delay and it was not caused by extraordinary circumstances like civil unrest or severe weather.

The actual amount is calculated based on the distance of your flight as you can see below:

  • Flights < 1,500km - Up to £220
  • Flights from 1,500 to 3,500km - Up to £350
  • Flights > 3,500km - Up to £520

If Your Delays Lasts 5+ Hours

If your Etihad flight is delayed for 5 hours or more, you’re entitled to a rebooking or a refund. If you decide to stay with your original flight despite the long delay, you can claim compensation based on the distance of your fight.

When Will Etihad Offer Care at the Airport?

If your Etihad flight is delayed by at least 2 hours, the airline must help you at the airport while you wait. This means you’re entitled to food and refreshments, as well as access to free communication services like 2 phone calls or emails. If the delay lasts overnight, Etihad must arrange hotel lodging and transport between the airport and the hotel.

tip

This applies to flights departing from the UAE as well as the UK and EU.

How long do you have to wait before you’re entitled to help at the airport?

The distance of your flight determines how much time you have to wait before Etihad must provide duty of care as you can see below:

  • For flights shorter than 1,500 km, assistance begins after a 2-hour delay.
  • For distances between 1,500 and 3,500 km, assistance begins after 3 hours.
  • For flights over 3,500 km, assistance begins after 4 hours.
tip

These rights apply regardless of what caused the delay.

When Your Etihad Flight is Cancelled

If Etihad cancels your flight, they will offer you a refund or a rebooking on another flight at no additional cost. You have these choices no matter where you departed from. Also, these are your rights even if Etihad is to blame for the cancellation.

If you accept a rebooking and you are re-routed to a different arrival airport from the one you had originally, Etihad must cover the cost of transport to your original arrival airport. This only applies to flights departing the UK or EU.

You’re also owed care and assistance if you’re forced to wait at the airport more than 2 hours. (See the care and assistance information listed above in the delays section.)

Compensation for Cancelled Flights

You’re owed financial compensation if:

  1. Etihad cancels your flight within 14 days of departure, and
  2. The cause is within their control, and
  3. You were departing from a UK or EU airport.

How Much Can You Get?

If Etihad cancels your flight within 14 days of departure for a controllable reason, and you choose a refund instead of a rebooking, then you could get compensated based on the distance of your flight.

If you accept rerouting, the amount of compensation you get depends on how late you arrive at your final destination and the flight distance as you can see in the following table.

You can also use a compensation calculator to see how much you could get from Etihad for cancellations.

Denied Boarding

Denied boarding is somewhat unlikely, but if you can't board a flight due to overbooking, you're often entitled to a seat on the next available flight or a refund if you decide not to continue with your trip. You’re also owed compensation based on the distance of your flight.

Missed Connections on Etihad

If an Etihad flight is late or cancelled and you miss your connecting flight on the same booking, you’re owed a refund or a rebooking to your destination. You can also make a claim for compensation if the airline is at fault for the initial disruption.

What to Do as Soon as Your Etihad Flight is Delayed or Cancelled

If you have a flight disruption, there are several steps you should take to ensure you receive the correct amount of compensation. Here’s what you should do:

  1. Talk to an Etihad agent to find out the reasons for the flight disruption. Knowing the cause of the cancellation or delay will help streamline the claims process and give you a better idea about the eligibility of your flight
  2. Make sure you keep track of all relevant documentation, from boarding passes to written confirmations of the disruption. These will help support your claim if you file one.
  3. Ask for care and assistance if you face a long airport delay, and if you have to buy essentials, collect all the receipts for reimbursement.
  4. Use a compensation calculator to see if your flight is eligible for compensation.

What to Avoid When Your Flight is Disrupted

  1. Accepting travel vouchers: Many airlines, Etihad included, may offer you a travel voucher. The voucher represents a financial value you can use towards future travel or services. This sounds like good compensation, but the voucher likely has limitations, like short expiry dates and locational restrictions. Accepting one can eliminate your eligibility for further compensation.
  2. Signing agreements without due diligence: This might sound like common sense, but hastily signing agreements without fully understanding what you're agreeing to can lead to a less-than-satisfactory compensation payout. Make sure you understand what you're signing.

How to File a Compensation Claim with Etihad

Even if you’re eligible, Etihad isn’t just going to send you your money. You need to complete the appropriate online claim form for your situation first. Here’s what to do:

  1. Gather your boarding pass, booking confirmation, proof of delay or cancellation and receipts for any additional expenses. Then, go to the Etihad website and look for the claim form.
  2. Include as many details as possible about what happened with your cancellation or delay, and upload all your supporting documents.
  3. Once you submit your claim, you might need to follow up with the airline. Otherwise, you can expect your claim to be processed in several weeks or months depending on the complexity of your case.

How much time do you have to file a compensation claim with Etihad?

Claim deadlines vary by location. Passengers in England and Wales have 6 years to file a claim, while those in Scotland have 5.

What if Etihad ignores or denies my claim?

If Etihad does not respond to your claim, or if they reject it, and you feel the reason is unfair, you can escalate the matter to the Civil Aviation Authority or let AirAdvisor handle the process for you.

Etihad Compensation Cases in Action: How Claims Work in Real Life

Etihad cancellations and long delays from UK airports can leave passengers juggling missed events, extra costs and confusing messages from the airline. Many travellers are told there is “nothing more Etihad can do”, or they are left chasing support that never really arrives.

Here are 2 case studies that illustrate how AirAdvisor has helped UK passengers get what they’re owed from the airline.

Case #1: London Heathrow to Abu Dhabi – Pre-Trip Cancellation and Over £1,900 Recovered

Disruption type: Flight cancellation a few days before departure
Total received: €1,903.37 (€600 compensation + €1,303.37 reimbursed expenses)
What happened: Isabella was due to fly from London Heathrow to Abu Dhabi on Etihad. A few days before she was supposed to travel, Etihad cancelled her flight. Instead of receiving clear options and support, she was left trying to sort out her trip herself.

When she later tried to pursue her rights, she reported that Etihad claimed they could not find her flight in their system, even though she still had all the emails and tickets proving the original booking. On top of the stress and uncertainty, she was facing more than a thousand in extra costs and no straightforward way to get her money back.

What AirAdvisor did: AirAdvisor pulled together Isabella’s booking confirmations, emails and ticket details to reconstruct the cancelled itinerary and show exactly what Etihad had originally sold and then cancelled. Using that evidence, the team:

  • Proved that the flight from London Heathrow to Abu Dhabi had been cancelled a few days before departure.
  • Demonstrated that Isabella had been forced into additional out-of-pocket expenses because of the disruption.
  • Filed a structured claim for both EU261/UK261 compensation and reimbursement of documented extra costs.

AirAdvisor then handled all back-and-forth with Etihad, so Isabella did not have to keep arguing about whether her flight “existed” in their system.

Outcome: Isabella received €600 in compensation plus €1,303.37 in reimbursed expenses, for a total of €1,903.37. What started as a cancellation brushed off by the airline became a properly resolved case once AirAdvisor stepped in and backed everything with evidence.

Case #2: London Heathrow to Abu Dhabi: Long Delay, Chaotic Airport Experience and a Missed Wedding

Disruption type: Long delay from London Heathrow to Abu Dhabi
Total received: £520 in compensation

What happened: Vasanth was travelling from London Heathrow to Abu Dhabi. The flight was heavily delayed, and during the disruption it was changed multiple times.

According to Vasanth’s statement, Etihad’s handling at the airport was poor. They were given vouchers for restaurants, but no proper space to rest while they waited through the extended delay. Despite the uncertainty about when they would finally depart, there was no meaningful effort to make the situation more manageable.

What AirAdvisor did: AirAdvisor examined the flight records and Vasanth’s documents to confirm that:

  • The delay on the London Heathrow to Abu Dhabi route exceeded the 3-hour threshold for compensation.
  • The disruption fell under Etihad’s responsibility as the operating carrier.

With that established, AirAdvisor submitted a claim under EU261/UK261 for compensation, highlighting the length of the delay and its real-world impact on the passenger’s plans. The team managed the full claim process so Vasanth did not have to keep chasing the airline himself.

Outcome: Vasanth received £520 in compensation, the maximum amount for a long-haul delay in this category. While the missed wedding could not be recovered, AirAdvisor ensured that Etihad was held financially accountable for the disruption and the way it was handled on the day.

Case #3: Madrid to Abu Dhabi: Same-Day Cancellation and Missed Long-Haul Journey

Total Received: €922.47 compensation and expenses
Issue: Same-day cancellation at Madrid–Barajas Airport
What happened: Ana was scheduled to fly from Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport to Abu Dhabi with Etihad Airways. Shortly before departure, her flight was cancelled, and passengers were left waiting onboard for over an hour without a clear explanation.

No hotel, meals or transport were provided, and Ana had to arrange her own overnight stay in Madrid. She also had a long-haul connection that Etihad did not rebook for the same day, turning a single disruption into an expensive, multi-day delay.

Unsure of her rights, especially since Etihad is not an EU airline, Ana contacted AirAdvisor to understand whether she qualified for compensation.

What AirAdvisor did: AirAdvisor reviewed the itinerary and confirmed that because the flight departed from an EU airport, the cancellation fell under EU261, even though Etihad operates outside the EU.

Our team documented the forced delay, collected overnight expenses and submitted a fully supported compensation claim.

The Outcome: Ana received: €600 compensation + €322.47 in reimbursed expenses for a total of €922.47

FAQ

Does EU261 apply to Etihad if my flight departs from the EU but connects through Abu Dhabi?

Yes. EU261 applies to any flight leaving an EU airport, including Etihad flights. If the first leg is delayed or cancelled and you miss your Abu Dhabi connection, compensation is based on your final arrival delay, not just the EU segment.

Can I claim compensation from Etihad if they change my aircraft and remove my booked seat type (like extra legroom or a preferred seat)?

Yes. If Etihad removes the seat type you paid for due to an aircraft change, you may be entitled to a partial refund of the seat fee. This is separate from compensation and applies even when EU261 does not.

Am I entitled to compensation if Etihad delays my flight due to mandatory security checks or document verifications?

Sometimes. While government-imposed checks may count as extraordinary circumstances, airline-driven procedural delays (such as long Etihad check-in queues or operational document reviews) can still qualify for compensation if they cause a late arrival of 3+ hours.

What happens if Etihad rebooks me onto a flight the next day, but refuses to cover hotel or food costs?

When departing from an EU airport, Etihad must cover meals, accommodation and transport after long delays or cancellations, regardless of extraordinary circumstances. You can claim back reasonable expenses with receipts even if Etihad initially refuses.
