Top 5 Airlines in Europe

#1
Aegean Airlines is the top European airline for 2024

Aegean – The Winner!

Regardless of what metric you use, Aegean Airlines is the largest Greek carrier. That means it flies the most passengers, has the largest fleet, and visits the most destinations of any airline based in the country.

Score 10.3
star

Aegean Airlines stands out as the best European airline due to a few factors. The first is that they received the maximum number of points for comfort and travelling both as a family and with pets.

Aegean is also tops for lounge reviews and is the second-best airline in Europe for customer reputation, with an average of 2.8 out of 5 from all sources. That’s likely influenced by the fact that Aegean is among the most comfortable European airlines and has an exemplary safety record.

Summary:

  • 93 total points overall - 10.30 consolidated score
  • Second-best customer reputation score from over 18,000 reviews
  • Top score for on-board comfort and safety
  • Best EU-based airline for airport lounges
  • Overall winner for the second year in a row
#2
Finnair – Second-Best European Airline

Finnair – Second-Best European Airline

Headquartered at Helsinki Airport, Finnair is one of the smaller airlines in the top 5, but small doesn’t mean they don’t have a lot to offer. As Finland's flag carrier airline, Finnair carries over 11 million passengers all over the globe every year.

Score 9.89

To earn its spot as the number 2 airline in Europe, Finnair is among our top airlines for comfort and takes second place to Aegean for airport lounges, according to travellers. With Finnair, consistency is key, and they have an unblemished safety record and score in the top 5 based on customer reviews.

The only area where Finnair scored the absolute worst was reliability. Although this is definitely an important factor, a lack of published information for some reliability components resulted in a lower overall score.

Summary:

  • 89 points overall - 9.89 consolidated score
  • Best for comfort, safety, and pet or family travel
  • Second-best lounges in Europe, based on 936 reviews
  • Worst for reliability
  • Second place in 2024 and 2025
#3
Iberia is a 3d airline in Europe

Iberia – 3rd Place

In 2023, Iberia won the title of the best European airline, and in 2025, the Spanish carrier remains solidly in 3rd place after a dip in 2024 to 6th place. The main reasons Iberia isn’t on top anymore? The company’s customer reputation score is almost the worst – only 2 airlines have lower review scores.

Score 9.78

Now, for the good news, Iberia gets top ratings for pet and family travel and safety. The airline’s lounges complete the top 3 in Europe, and only Air France has a better professional review score. Iberia was #15 in the top 100 airlines in the world in 2024.

Iberia is based at Madrid–Barajas Airport and offers flights to worldwide destinations. In 2024 alone, more than 30 million passengers used the airline, so it’s a good thing that Iberia doesn’t appear lower on our AirAdvisor list.

Summary:

  • A total of 88 points - 9.89 consolidated score
  • Fourth-most reliable EU airline
  • Highly ranked on the list of the World’s Top 100 airlines in 2024
  • Recommended for pet-friendly travel and flying with kids
  • Gained 3 spots compared to 2024
#4
Lufthansa ranks as the 4th-best European airline for 2025

Lufthansa – 4th Place

Lufthansa German Airlines is among Europe’s largest airlines in terms of passenger volume, so it’s nice that they stay in the top 5. Lufthansa scored 18 on the list of the World’s Top 100 Airlines for 2024, an increase of 3 spots from 2023.

Score 9.67

It’s one of the best European airlines to choose if you’re travelling with pets or if comfort is a priority.

Lufthansa also has solid lounge and customer review scores. Where this high-capacity airline falls a bit short is in reliability, where the top 5 is just out of reach. They generally scored average or better in every other category.

Summary:

  • 87 total points - 9.89 consolidated score
  • Second place for comfort
  • Among the best airlines for pet travel
  • Top 3 for professional reviews
  • Zero accidents in 2024
#5
KLM is one of the top 5 airlines in Europe

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines – 5th Place (tied)

As the national airline of the Netherlands, KLM has a hub at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, the fourth-largest airport for passenger volume on the continent. Luckily, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines also sits slightly above average on our list.

Score 8.78

In terms of what KLM does well to land itself in the top half of the list, the airline has the fifth-best professional review score and received top points for both family and pet travel. Additionally, KLM rates well for comfort and safety.

Now, the downside, KLM’s numbers are well below average for reliability (due to missing data) and lounge reviews. Increasing the results in just one of these categories would likely land the airline higher for 2026, cementing its upward trajectory.

Summary:

  • 79 total points - 9.89 consolidated score
  • No accidents in 2024
  • Top 5 for professional reviews
  • Top airline for family travel
  • Joint top airline for traveling with pets
  • Up 2 spots from 2024 (7th place)
#5
Scandinavian Airlines is among the top European airlines

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) – Also 5th Place

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) is the main carrier for Denmark, Norway, and Sweden and routinely transports up to 25 million annual travellers around the world. The carrier shares 5th place with KLM as each has the same number of total points.

Score 8.78

The positives: SAS received the maximum number of points in 3 categories, which were pet travel, family-friendly travel, and safety. But these top spots were shared with others. Otherwise, the airline still had a very positive ranking for comfort, price, and reputation.

We should note that data for 2024 for SAS was lacking, but in 2023, the airline had the second-worst rate for delayed flights, placing them second from the bottom overall.

Scandinavian Airlines presents as a good option, but if you’re travelling long distances or booking connecting flights, it might be better to look elsewhere. If booking a connection with SAS can’t be avoided, just make sure you have a generous layover.

Summary:

  • 79 overall points - 8.78 consolidated score
  • Top scores for safety and travel with pets and family
  • Second-worst for reliability for on-time and cancelled flights in 2023
  • No change in ranking compared to 2024

Next 6 Top European Airlines

Norwegian Air Shuttle – 7th Place

Norwegian Air Shuttle is 7th on our overall list for 2025. This is the highest-ranking low-cost airline on the AirAdvisor best European airline index, and Norwegian is the second-largest in Scandinavia after SAS.

This airline is in the top 3 for customer reputation and offers a top 5 lounge experience, which are both based on actual passenger reviews. Norwegian also gets the maximum points for safety due to an accident-free 2024.

Summary:

  • 73 points overall - 8.11 consolidated score
  • Third-best customer reputation score
  • Top 5 airport lounges
  • Top for safety
  • Second-worst for professional reviews

Air France – 8th Place

Air France - 8th PlaceSome might expect the flag carrier of France to score a little better than it did. Air France takes our 8th position, up one spot from last year.

Air France does a lot of things well. The airline’s ranking on the 2024 World’s Top 100 Airlines Ranking was 8, so Air France tops the group for professional reviews. In addition to this, Air France scores above average for comfort and lounge reviews.

Unfortunately, Air France was the only airline on our list to report an accident in 2024, and although it was non-fatal, the carrier lost a significant number of points on this metric alone. But, on the positive side, an accident-free 2025 should see an increase in rank for Air France in our 2026 list. And, as you might expect, Air France is one of the more expensive airlines to fly.

Summary:

  • 72 points overall - 8.00 consolidated score
  • Top scorer for professional reviews
  • Second place for on-board comfort
  • Great for family travel
  • Among the most expensive airlines

TAP Air Portugal – 9th Place

TAP Air Portugal makes the top 10 airlines in EuropeWith annual passengers around the 16 million mark, TAP Air Portugal definitely gets the job done. However, the airline’s roughly 2,500 flights per week are some of the most likely on our list to encounter a cancellation. TAP scored in the bottom 3 for reliability.

For the purposes of the 2025 ranking, we only took into account accidents from 2024, so TAP gets high points for having no accidents. But if we go back further, TAP is actually one of the few European airlines to report casualties from an accident since IATA reporting began in 2005.

As for the other positives, TAP is the second-cheapest airline for 2025 and scores relatively well for flight comfort and family travel (although not the best).

Summary:

  • Overall score of 65 points - 7.22 consolidated score
  • Second-cheapest EU carrier
  • Low reliability score with higher-than-average instances of cancelled flights
  • Gained 3 spots from 2024 to 2025

Volotea – 10th Place

Volotea - 10th placeOn our 2024 list, Volotea was dead last, so 10th place for 2025 is a significant improvement. As a discount carrier, you might be surprised that Volotea is actually the best-reviewed airline by passengers. Plus, Volotea won the award in 2024 for the Best Low-Cost Airline in Europe and the Best Low-Cost Airline in Spain. Add that to an unblemished safety record, and that’s why Volotea’s ranking has improved so drastically for 2025.

Where Volotea has more disappointing results is in the airline lounges category. They scored the worst because they don’t currently have any available. Also, the airline isn’t exactly a comfortable choice for travellers.

Summary:

  • 61 total points - 6.78 consolidated score
  • Best customer reputation score
  • Good safety record
  • Won various low-cost airline awards in 2024
  • Gained 5 places from 2024

Vueling – 11th Place

Although Vueling appears fairly low down in the list, the airline is one of the top EU-based airlines for reliability, with a 2024 on-time rate of 87% and a cancellation rate of only 0.5%.

In 2023, Vueling was among the cheapest European airlines, but for 2024, the carrier shares 7th place in this metric with Iberia. And if you’re deciding between these 2 airlines from a comfort perspective, Iberia is definitely the better choice!

And now for some additional not-so-good stuff. Vueling is one of the worst-reviewed airlines for both overall experience and airport lounges.

Vueling’s somewhat mediocre place on our list doesn’t seem to stop passengers from using the airline. In 2024, about 35 million people chose the carrier for their flights.

Summary:

  • A total of 58.5 points - 6.50 consolidated score
  • One of the least comfortable European airlines
  • Second-most reliable
  • Zero plane accidents for 2024

Ryanair – 12th Place

Ryanair – 12th PlaceMost European travellers will be very familiar with the most famous low-cost airline of them all – Ryanair. We can assure that Ryanair at least falls just outside the category of the 3 worst EU airlines, and one of the best things going for this carrier is both the reported flight cancellation and on-time rate. Ryanair is the most reliable airline in the EU. Consistency is key for Ryanair – in both 2023 and 2024, the airline had the best record for on-time arrivals, which was 88%.

Based in Dublin, this leader in the low-cost airline game doesn’t score very high in any other categories, except for safety. This includes price (they are on the same level as Air France), which can be surprising for passengers who expect very low fares from the airline.

Summary:

  • An overall total of 58 points - 6.44 consolidated score
  • First place for reliability
  • Accident-free for 2024
  • Second-worst customer reputation scores
  • Worst for pet travel and comfort

The Bottom 3 – Worst EU Airlines

Wizz Air – 13th Place

Now that we get into some of the worst airlines in Europe, we have 13th place, Wizz Air. The best thing we can say about this Hungarian discount airline is that it was by far the cheapest for the 3rd year in a row. We can also say that Wizz is in the top 3 for reliability, which means it’s a good choice based on 2 important factors.

But, like Ryanair, Wizz isn’t good for traveling with pets, and it’s the second-worst for comfort. It’s also the worst-rated carrier by passengers and not especially good for travelling as a family.

Summary:

  • 57 points overall - 6.33 consolidated score
  • Cheapest airline in Europe
  • Joint worst for pet travel
  • Second-last for comfort
  • Third place for flight reliability

LOT Polish Airlines – 14th Place

One thing we can say about LOT Polish Airlines is that it doesn’t take last place. Another good thing, and perhaps the only real positive, is an accident-free safety record. For people travelling with pets or as a family, LOT is an OK choice – not the best and not the worst.

Operating since as early as 1928, LOT is one of the world’s oldest carriers. In 2023, LOT had the overall worst on-time percentage of 76%, but that increased to 79% in 2024.

Summary:

  • 56 points overall - 6.22 consolidated score
  • Top scores for safety
  • Acceptable for family and pet travel
  • The biggest decrease in ranking from 2023 to 2024 – 8th place to 14th

Air Europa – The Worst Airline in Europe (because someone has to be)

Air Europa – The Worst Airline in EuropeAir Europa, the third-largest Spanish carrier, was in last place in 2023 as well.

A slight reprieve to 10th place in 2024 gave us hope that things were changing for the better, but that doesn’t appear to be the case in 2025.

The only category where Air Europa received full points was safety. The only scores better than average were for comfort, pet travel, and family travel.

Dismal scores were recorded for lounge reviews, professional reviews, and affordability (due to a lack of information).

Summary:

  • 48 points in total - 5.33 consolidated score
  • Top points for safety
  • Worst airline for professional reviews
  • Lost 5 places compared to 2024

Most Reliable Airline in Europe with the Lowest Disruption Rate

Modern departures boardNobody likes to have their flight delayed or cancelled. That’s why it’s important to find out the most reliable airline in Europe. For the 2025 AirAdvisor rankings, we used flights from 2023 and 2024 (full years) for the most up-to-date reliability info.

The top European airline for reliability is the low-cost airline Ryanair. We reviewed over 2 million Ryanair flights, and they have the lowest overall instances of delayed flights. In both 2023 and 2024, 88% of the company’s flights arrived on time – the best score of all the airlines.

Honourable mention goes to Vueling in the category. Their cancellation rate was only 0.5%, the lowest in both years we covered, although in 2024, they shared that title with Volotea and Wizz Air.

Most Comfortable European Airline for a First-Rate In-Flight Experience

Let’s face it: flying can be uncomfortable, but there are things that certain airlines offer to make the experience a little bit better. If you’re interested in knowing the most comfortable airlines in Europe, it’s a tie between Finnair and Aegean Airlines. Both carriers received the maximum number of points as they offer free Wi-Fi (for everyone or loyalty program members), comfort items on long-haul flights, in-flight entertainment, complimentary snacks and non-alcoholic drinks, and comfortable seats.

Other notable airlines in the comfort category include KLM, Air France, and Lufthansa, which only lost a point because although they offer Wi-Fi, it’s chargeable on most flights.

If comfort is important to you, especially if you’re planning a long flight, you’ll want to avoid our worst-ranked airlines, Vueling, Ryanair, and Wizz Air.

Safest Airlines in Europe

To judge the safety of our European airlines, we simply looked at whether or not they experienced an accident or safety incident in 2024, based on data from IATA. You’ll likely be glad to hear that only one airline, Air France, had a notable accident in 2024.

As a result, the other 14 airlines all received the maximum points for safety, and the good news is that although Air France had an accident, it was non-fatal. It involved a tail strike on landing.

For more details on each airline’s safety record going back to 2005, check out our post on the safest airlines in Europe.

Top 5 Airlines Based on Customer Reputation

A good indicator of an airline’s overall performance is often found in real reviews. Based on the consolidation of over 800,000 customer reviews from 9 different sources, the best European airlines for reputation (in order) are:

  • Volotea – This Spanish carrier didn’t even make the top 5 in 2024, but for 2025, the customer review score is the highest at 2.83 out of 5.
  • Aegean Airlines – The Greek airline has the second-highest overall review score of 2.8 out of 5.
  • Norwegian Air Shuttle – This discount carrier has a consolidated review score of 2.63.
  • SAS – Another newcomer to the top 5 for 2025, the average SAS review scores 2.48.
  • Finnair – Not too far behind SAS, Finnair scores 2.44 out of 5 with its passengers.

In 2024, Lufthansa and KLM made the top 5 in this category, but now, they have both dropped to 6th and 7th place, respectively. Hopefully, they can get their numbers back up for 2026!

Although these scores may be lower than you’d hope, this metric should still help you pick a suitable airline for your next flight, even if none of the scores are glowing.

Europe’s Cheapest Airlines – Top Budget Carriers

Wizz Air is cheapest airline in Europe according to passenger revenue per seat mileTimes are getting tougher, and vacation/travel funds are often taking the hit. As a result, it’s nice to know that there are some cheaper alternatives out there for your next flight. Overall, Wizz Air was the cheapest European airline. We used the average passenger revenue per seat kilometre (RASK) for each airline in 2024, and Wizz came out on top with €0.0417. The bad news is that this is actually more than a one-cent hike from 2022.

Other notable budget-friendly carriers are TAP Air Portugal, with a RASK of €0.0713, and SAS, with an average of €0.075.

To round out the top 5 cheapest airlines in Europe, we found that Norwegian’s RASK was €0.076 for 4th place, and Finnair took the 5th spot with a revenue per seat kilometre of €0.0797.

warning

NOTE: In this category, we do have to mention that information for LOT, Air Europa, and Volotea was not publicly available at the time of writing, which may affect the outcome slightly.

Most Expensive European Airlines

On the other hand, with the same caveat that data was unavailable for 3 European airlines, the most expensive European airlines are Lufthansa, Air France, and Ryanair. Yes, one of these airlines probably shouldn’t belong here, but the RASKs don’t lie:

  • Lufthansa – €0.0855
  • Air France – €0.0843
  • Ryanair – €0.0843

Best European Airlines for Family Travel

Best European Airlines for Family TravelTravelling as a family can be a bit stressful, but some airlines aim to take some of that stress away. The best airline in Europe for families is actually 7 different airlines, which all scored top points for having a family seating policy, free stroller check-in, and kids’ meals to keep the littles happy, as long as you book them in advance. Add that to on-board entertainment, and you can expect a smooth ride with your kids.

Unsurprisingly, we don’t see any of the discount airlines at the top of the list, and in all, these are the best airlines to choose when flying as a family in 2025:

Aegean, Air France, Finnair, Iberia, KLM, Lufthansa, SAS

Our worst scorers in this category are Wizz Air and Vueling, as you have to pay to select seats for minors, and they lack an entertainment system.

Top 5 Airlines for Lounge Reviews

If you’re one of those travellers who enjoy spending time in airport lounges before your flight or during a layover, this category will be of particular interest to you. The top spot, with an average lounge review score of 4.28 out of 5, is Aegean Airlines, as judged by the customers who frequent the lounges. Finnair isn’t far behind with a score of 4.2.

The next 3 places belong to Iberia (4.17), Lufthansa (4.0), and Norwegian Air Shuttle (also 4.0), rounding out the top 5 European airlines for lounges.

The Most Pet-Friendly European Airlines

It’s not common to travel with a pet, but when you need to, you need to. Instead of leaving your furry friend (or bird, in some cases) at home, there are 6 airlines that all get top marks for top-notch pet policies. The most pet-friendly EU-based airlines are:

  • Aegean Airlines
  • Finnair
  • Iberia
  • KLM
  • Lufthansa
  • SAS

Each airline offers the chance to bring your small pet with you in the cabin, lets you ship or travel with large pets as cargo/checked baggage, and welcomes pets into the airline-branded lounges. That should be everything you need to have a positive European travel experience with your pet.

Criteria and Methodology

Our team spent many hours compiling all the data to determine the best airlines in Europe. These are the categories we used and the factors that went into calculating each airline’s score:

Reliability: We used published data from OAG.com to get the on-time statistics for each airline. Our data set includes everything from 2023 and 2024. In all, we used more than 7.5 million flights.

The key components of this score are on-time percentage, which is the number of flights that arrived on time divided by the total flights, and cancelled flights percentage, the number of cancelled flights as a proportion of the total flights. We also took into account the number of passengers and total flights, along with the annual load factor.

tip

Note that where data was not publicly available at the time of writing, the airline received the lowest score for that category.

Have you been on the receiving end of a last-minute flight cancellation? You may be entitled to compensation.Contact us to find out

Comfort: These numbers are based on 5 factors: seat comfort, availability of comfort items like pillows and blankets on long-haul flights, Wi-Fi availability (and price), snacks and non-alcoholic drinks at no charge, and in-flight entertainment. If the airline offers these, it receives points; if it doesn’t, it gets zero.

Safety: This category is binary in that the airline either had an accident in 2024, according to IATA, or did not. Being accident-free during this period resulted in the most points, whereas if the airline had a safety incident, it received a lower number of points. If there was a fatal accident during this period, the airline receives zero points.

Price: Although it was not available for Volotea, Air Europa, and LOT, public data from the remaining 12 airlines was used to calculate the 2024 passenger revenue per available seat kilometre. This is the airline’s reported passenger revenue divided by the number of seat kilometres offered during the year.

Customer Reputation: Our team consolidated customer reviews from 9 different websites to get a good overall picture. These included Google, Kayak, TripAdvisor, Yelp, TrustPilot, Consumer Affairs, the BBB, Influenster.com, and Airlinequality.com. The result is data based on 831,513 independent customer reviews.

Airline Lounges: We looked at the airline-specific lounges available and the average customer review score. Higher review scores = higher AirAdvisor score.

Professional Reviews: We combed through 46 different airline industry awards to see if any of our top 15 airlines appeared. The primary focus was on the airlines’ position on the World's Top 100 Airlines for 2024 list, followed by other secondary awards, like the Best Airlines in Europe 2024, the World’s Best Regional Airlines for 2024, and the World’s Best Low-Cost Airlines 2024.

Family Travel: Our family travel scores are based on binary responses in 5 categories. Those are free stroller check-in, a family seating policy, kids' meals (on request), in-flight entertainment systems, and the option for free seat selection for children under 13.

Travelling with Pets: The individual components for this category include whether or not you can take your pet in the cabin on your flight or into the airline lounge, and if it’s possible to ship your pet as cargo or as a checked bag if they’re too large for the cabin. If the airline allows each of these factors, they’ll score the highest.

Choosing the Top European Airlines for Your Next Flight

It’s easy to focus everything on Aegean because they scored the highest overall. But in reality, every European airline on our list has its own pros and cons. It’s up to you to decide what’s most important. If it’s cost, consider Wizz Air. For reliability, Ryanair should be your top choice. For comfort, you can’t go wrong with Aegean or Finnair. Travelling as a family? KLM is among the best airlines for you.

Hopefully, this information will guide your next flight purchase when you’re faced with the choice between a few airlines. Happy flying!
